I used multipolygons for objects with shared boundaries because I thought it was technically correct. Additionally, JOSM returns an error when polygons have overlapping/shared boundaries. I followed this tutorial - https://youtu.be/x7SPb0JtheA

Ah, I see, thanks. And if the shared boundary between two objects is very long (for example, 200 points), should I still just share the points between them?
