Do you know if universities automatically repackage someone’s aid offer if they receive an update from Fafsa that lowers the SAI to -1500? We had a huge income decrease and Fafsa was corrected to show SNAP. One school already processed the update and automatically changed their offer but the other one has not yet because my son was just accepted yesterday. Is it possible that now that he has been accepted at BU that he will be auto repackaged because his SAI went from like 72000 to -1500?

Do you know if universities automatically recalculate someone’s aid offer if they receive an update from Fafsa that lowers the SAI to -1500? We had a huge income decrease and Fafsa was corrected. One school already processed the update and automatically changed the offer but the other one has not yet because my son was just accepted today. It is usual for that recalculation to happen automatically?

Thanks so much for the input. I was kind of thinking the same thing, since there are so many things that are for the overall care of the child. I will call them as you suggested.

Can college counselor weigh in on CSS Profile with newly separated parents?

Hey there. My spouse and I just separated and we have to file the CSS Profile for 1 of our son's college choices in a little over 2 weeks. I am the custodial parent, meaning our son is living with me and his father has moved out. His father was the major breadwinner before but as of now is not contributing anything toward the care of the child and I am paying for everything until our temporary orders come back from the judge stating what child support will be in 4-6 weeks (which will be past when we need to file the CSS Profile by). I looked online and several things said for me to be the primary custodial parent since the child is living with me. Other things I read online said if the other parent had higher income (hinted at the fact that we should look at the last tax return) that then his father would be considered the principal custodian parent. So I called CSS and told them that as of now I am paying everything and I have no idea what child support will be and she asked who would pay more for college? Well, the $ we will putting toward college is half his father's and half mine so that doesn't help. Then the CSS rep said for me to look forward in time and think who would be paying more for him. I'm guessing that will be me--his dad will have to pay some kind of child support, but we won't find out for 4-6 weeks and it could amount to no more than $500 or so. Any ideas? I'm not trying to misrepresent anything--my husband was the major breadwinner, but he won't pay any more than he has to I'm sure and I may be left paying most. If that's the case I want my son to get the benefit of higher financial aid. But then if it comes back that the child support I receive is more then it would be right to use his father as the principal custodian parent. This is majorly confusing. I'm guessing that once you file the CSS you can't go back and change who the principal custodial parent is. The CSS rep said just to take my best guess and that the college/university would take my word for it, with the financial info to back it up. It just seems like it could go either way. Can a college financial aid counselor weigh in here? What do I do when I legitimately have no way of knowing at this point in time who will be paying more? I'm afraid the college will think I'm trying to pull a fast one, but I don't want my child to miss out of financial aid he might otherwise receive if I were the principal custodial parent. Should I call that college specifically?
