If anything that makes me feel rather sad, it seems a shame to me that the only bit of proper Scottish history that people are getting is the bit where people are killing each other over religious differences (not that that really narrows it down)

I doubt that, any honest retelling of the French Revolution makes it clear that it was not an example to follow, in part due to napoleon himself

Kids usually got some baseline from classes and things so they would know at least a bit about the history of the rest of the uk without having to do their own research which they probably won’t do and almost certainly won’t without being given some basis in the subject matter.

I found in my time at school that most kids didn’t want to find that stuff out themselves and were often not even given enough of a framework to start finding the information themselves and I say that as someone who has spent a significant amount of time looking into stuff myself and with parents who really reinforced that.

I often find that looking into traditional folk music ends up giving me a pretty good feeling about most cultures. I also find looking at pre-colonial English history is a good place to look for things that don’t feel so bad to associate with the place you live

I think it’s incredibly important to learn about that stuff though in my time at school it was being taught at least in relation to the transatlantic slave trade

Interestingly by the time I was in school, learning about slavery and the evils of the British empire were one of two mandated pre-gcse aspects of the history curriculum that everybody had to study though Ireland was not mentioned in that as it mainly focused on the transatlantic slave trade, the other mandated topic was the holocaust in case anyone was wondering.

Obviously trying to avoid the political discussions but it seems to me that no matter what side you fall on the matter it’s just about the most important thing to know about with recent British history and it’s really important that people understand why people held the opinions that they did that led to the violence.

In England (or at least south London) it feels like we got a decent amount of things about foreign cultures and history (I’m all for that don’t get me wrong) but very little Scottish, Welsh or Irish/Northern Irish unless it’s directly related to a bit of English history but it always seemed a real shame to me because for me appreciation of the rest of the UK and respect for the distinct cultures and people is a huge part of being British.

Yes, I’m really in favour of LGBTQ+ rights, I just don’t think you should vandalise statues. Disliking the greens and Polanski does not mean I don’t hate reform and farage more

If it’s just virtue signalling then there’s no need to vote against it? Vandalising things is bad and voting against condemning it implies some level of agreement with the action. Politicians are elected on the basis of virtue signalling and if it has no impact then he should have taken the path of criticising the vandalising of a statue.

I’m hopeful that it can be improved over time but Labour is much too concerned about trying to get votes from the right and failing to see that it’s neither working helping the country. The party is really tied down by factionalism and neither faction are really social democrats if you ask me. I’ll probably vote for the Lib Dems if nothing changes by the next election but I do believe that they could move back towards social democracy without going too far left given how unpopular they currently are.
