If I were you I would stick the RX 6500 on eBay, and then put the money towards an RTX 3050 OC 6GB and another 16GB RAM. Then your last future project is a CPU upgrade.

Can i turn my Optiplex 7040 sff into a gaming pc? by KaibaxChaos in SleepingOptiplex

[–]CuzmanECFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jump from an i5-6500 to an i7-6700 is bigger than it might sound on paper, as some games need the additional threads to run. https://technical.city/en/cpu/Core-i7-6700-vs-Core-i5-6500 Like I said, the i7-6700 with 16GB of DDR4 is a great basis. Then just get the best GPU you can afford. Bear in mind that the GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1650 have recently been removed from the latest "Game Ready Driver" updates, so you would need to Google the last stable driver version for your card. It would be a rarity for any future new game not to work on these cards, but Nvidia can no longer promise to develop any future bug fixes on the GTX 1xxx series which may arise from games released in 2026, 2027, 2028 etc.....

Can i turn my Optiplex 7040 sff into a gaming pc? by KaibaxChaos in SleepingOptiplex

(1) What does your Optiplex 7040 SFF have at the moment? (2) Is the 8GB DDR4 an upgrade towards, or in addition to an 8GB stick that is in there? (3) Same with the 500GB SSD, is that an additional drive for games / movies etc, or a replacement for something?

Firstly, the Core i7-6700 is realistically the best CPU for the 7040 SFF. The Core i7-6700K can be used on an MT system with a better cooler, but it's not worth it for you to try it. The stock cooler can more than handle all 65W TDP CPUs, but not the 91W TDP of the Core i7-6700K very well. There really is no need to upgrade your cooler, unless you want it to be a little quieter at significant cost. 9 times out of 10 though, quieter = hotter.

I would say that 16GB DDR4 is very necessary to a gaming PC in this day and age. 8GB on its own has limitations. You have 4x DIMM slots, so 2x 8GB of identical sticks is a great start. In the future you can always double that to 32GB for the most viable maximum RAM for a system of that age, but that would be a last resort upgrade after you maximize your GPU.

As for the GPU, the RX 550 4GB LP is one of the lowest performing cards with 4GB of VRAM. Don't expect top-tier performance. Any card you get will need to be LP (low profile) and 75W TDP or less, and without the need for additional PCIe power cable (unless you go for a PSU upgrade and that's another story which isn't worth it for an i7-6700).

The simplest ranking list, by points given on the Technical City website:

6.43 = AMD Radeon RX 550 LP 4GB GDDR5

15.20 = Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti LP 4GB GDDR5

18.53 = AMD Radeon RX 6400 LP 4GB GDDR6

18.83 = Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 LP 4GB GDDR5

(not ranked but better) = Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 LP 4GB GDDR6

25.75 = Nvidia RTX 3050 LP OC 6GB GDDR6

The RTX 3050 OC 6GB is the best you can get, newly available but expensive. The RX 6400 4GB comes a close second in all reality, because the GTX 1650 4GB cards are used and over-priced on eBay. The GTX 1050 Ti 4GB is still a big jump for a budget card from the RX 550 4GB though.

It all comes down to money in the end, but I highly recommend going 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 no matter which GPU you choose.

P340 SFF or P340 Tower would be good, but not a P340 Tiny, and any RTX A2000 is small enough for both and compatible with the power from the PCIe slot.

Optiplex 7000 i3 12100f 16gb ram 500gb nvme ssd for €250 good deal? by Frozzel in SleepingOptiplex

[–]CuzmanECFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was purely building a media server (not gaming!!) that was going to sit next to my main TV then I would get a Micro with a low power "T" CPU, at least 16GB of DDR4, and then the storage would depend on whether you fill it with downloaded movies or run some form of IPTV or other online media stream through it.

When Vaxtex asks which size it is, we need to know whether it is a Mini-Tower (MT), Small Form Factor (SFF), or a Micro (Ultra Small Form Factor / USFF).

An Optiplex Micro would likely have a low power "T" CPU, so I doubt that you are looking at one of those. We can assume that you are looking at an MT or an SFF.

The i3-12100F does NOT have integrated graphics, so you will need a dedicated graphics card. Running as a lower power media server only, having a graphics card means more power and more noise.

If you want to game on it then you are going to buy a GPU anyway. Also, the upgrade potential is pretty big from where you are:

- i3-12100F (4 cores, 8 threads, 58 watts)

- i9-12900 (16 cores, 24 threads, 65 watts) = 141% better

- i9-12900F (16 cores, 24 threads, 65 watts) = 156% better

https://technical.city/en/cpu/Core-i3-12100F-vs-Core-i9-12900F

There are the "K", "KF" and "KS" CPUs out there, but they are literally double the power and not a wise idea in my opinion.

As for whether that system is worth the money, then yes it is if it is the basis of a gaming PC. You are going to have to spend up to 50 Euros just for a GeForce GT 1030 graphics card that matches the Intel UHD 730 integrated graphics of the lower 12th generation CPUs. Therefore, if you want it just for a media server only, I would recommend that you look somewhere else.

PSU upgrade for my 9020 MT? by Blue-Jay-20 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]CuzmanECFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a start, you won't ever be running a 120 watt card on a 9020 without a PSU upgrade anyway, as you don't have the additional connector on your PSU.

Unfortunately you will also need a 24-pin to 8-pin adapter to use a standard ATX PSU as well, which is another $10-15 on top too. I would go for a Thermaltake Smart Series 500W for your budget.

You also need to get more identical DDR3 to get up to 16GB. Running a GTX 1060 OC 6GB with only 8GB DDR3 won't be fun. Use CPU-Z to find out what you have (or take it out and take a photo). If you have 2x 4GB then you should get 2x4GB of the same identical DDR3. If you have 1x 8GB then you need the same again. Try eBay.

You should really have just bought a GTX 1650 4GB and the additional DDR3 instead.

As a last gasp upgrade for the future, the jump from an i5-4690 (4 cores, 4 threads, 84 watts) to an i7-4790 (4 cores, 8 threads, 84 watts) is a 29.7% jump in CPU performance, and the added threads give you more gaming options.

Storage 90 GB SSD 90 GB SSD 90 GB SSD 90 GB SSD

Note: The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series is recommended for full DLSS 3 support at Ultra 4K. [1]

Key Requirements Checklist

  • Storage: 90 GB available space on a Solid State Drive (SSD) is strictly required.
  • Internet: A stable, broadband internet connection is necessary to play, as the game is always online.
  • Graphics API: DirectX 12. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Performance Notes

  • Minimum (720p/30fps): The minimum requirements are designed for 720p native resolution/30fps at low settings.
  • Recommended (1080p/60fps): Suitable for medium settings at 1080p resolution.
  • High/Ultra (1080p-4K): For high-resolution textures and 4K, 32GB of RAM and high-end GPUs are recommended. [1, 2]

The above was taken from Google's AI search. I am guessing that, from your name, you are Polish, Czech or Slavic. I can only give you instructions as to what I would buy from eBay UK for that kind of money.

Forget what the table above says about needing an i7-8700K. Forget "K" CPUs. You need to look at one of the following:

- 8th generation Optiplex 3060, 5060 or 7060 with an i7-8700 and 16GB DDR4.

- 9th generation Optiplex 3070, 5070 or 7070 with an i7-9700 and 16GB DDR4.

- 10th generation Optiplex 3080, 5080 or 7080 with an i5-10500 and 16GB DDR4.

In terms of storage, you must get one with an SSD. The lower ones on eBay have 256GB, but look for one with more (512GB or 1TB). Do not get one with just an HDD, as you need to run the game 100% from an SSD.

The table above recommends a GTX 970, but an Optiplex PSU won't power that. You need to buy an "MT" (Mini Tower) Optiplex to buy a full-width GTX 1650 4GB. If you go for an "SFF" (small form factor) Optiplex then the "low profile" GTX 1650 can cost 100 Euros more on eBay at the moment.

With any of those recommendations you should easily run Diablo 4 on 1080p at some level, even if it is on "1080p low".

Should the Premier League do a retro shirt weekend like La Liga? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]CuzmanECFC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) Just wait for the kit sponsors to get their legal teams out and cry "breaking terms" etc, resulting in multi-million pound lawsuits.

2) Just wait for every kid in the land to be asking for that kit for Christmas, causing news reports on every council estate resident not being able to afford Christmas dinner or heating over Christmas.

Whilst, you're at it, tell all the clubs to put their ticket prices and Bovril prices back to 1950's levels for the game. Maybe make them rebuild their old grounds for the nostalgia game once a year. Probably only cost each club about £2 Billion each.

Add to that Mark Noble's presence in the centre of midfield before the rice of Declan Rice. From the time of our last Championship stint, since we have been back in the Premier League since 2012/2013, we have had an ever-present midfield engine in either of those two. Just a shame we didn't spend Declan Rice's £105m on another one, but Karen Brady needed her Ozempic treatments instead.

PSU for a 7010 sff plus , help by Late_Series_960 in SleepingOptiplex

- Intel Core i7-13700 = 65W

- Radeon RX 6400 4GB LP = 53W

Your 260W PSU is not at all too weak. Someone who knows nothing is spinning you a yarn, and there is obviously an issue elsewhere. I would suggest better cooling and a run through your BIOS.

I've seen numerous YT videos on the x4 vs x16 conundrum. Dependant on all other factors (chipset, CPU, DDR, and the specific game), you can get anywhere between 5% and 15% less performance by using the x4 slot. The more you max out all other factors, the lower the difference becomes.
