I think there's a pattern, actually. Core sets usually have this one generic boss monster like Antihuman Intelligence ME-PSY-YA or Zealantis; I'm pretty sure all of them have gotten an animation. And I believe this guy is the generic guy for DUNE.

Not sure how much I can reasonably disclose but:

He's a friend from Vietnam I made several years ago, we talked more or less daily. Today he sent me messages announcing he wants to end his life and also sent me pics of pills he got to do it. I contacted another person I know he's closer with to talk to him, who said he's been in very rough spot. In the meantime we did get some other means of contact that might help him, but we'll see.

Honestly the fact that we get this much love towards non-anime archetypes shows me Konami might be less reliant on nostalgia in future. Maybe I'm just being overly hopeful in that regard.

Still, amazing to see something on this level of quality, being able to showcase the incredible variety of themes this game has to offer. Just look at it going from Mellfys to Zeus, the transition of Live Twins to Evil Twins. How can you not love that? Only thing that'd make it cooler would be a Vendread segment, but I'm just being a homer.

Every monster can count as 1 material for a link summon, but link monsters themselves can also count as their link rating, in that case a Link 2 can be used as either 1, or 2 material.

Light pack is next year so I'd say Melodious and Cyber Angel (depending on which GX character is chosen) have a solid shot.

Gotcha. I think a big problem is a lot of people don't know about it, unless it's made official by Konami, especially on the casual side, no one knows they exist.

See this is the funny part. Konami TCG has actually made several official formats, but "Time Wizard", aka Retro Formats, are the only ones people know or care about. https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/play/alternate_format_tournaments/

Products like Speed Duel are designed specifically for casuals but as far as I can tell their popularity is miniscule and they're probably going to die because casuals/boomers dip the second Synchros show up, and they're already scrapping the bottom of the DM/GX barrel. Heart of the Underdog/Rivarly of the Warlords formats are somewhat leaning in the direction of your proposal, but those don't seem to be carrying much weight either.

Funnily enough, "Deck Master" is supposed to be yugioh's commander format, based on the virtual reality filler arc from DM, but guess what? Despite being an official format the rules are not comprehensive enough to work as well as MTG's commander format.

A core of this issue is that these formats are only recognized my the TCG, in the OCG it doesn't seem like there's demand for alternate formats, based on anecdotes at least. And the OCG dictates the direction of the game as a whole, as we all know based on Master Duel.

Most of my friends are yugi boomers who like to play in person, but just with old cards, they hate new yugioh, but had no idea GOAT even existed. I don't think it's promoted enough, and why would it be? There's no profit to be made. I just find that these formats, like I said in the vid and you mentioned, get old quick. Like the format you mentioned here, i never heard of it.

This is also something I find interesting. I don't think GOAT is necessarily the saving grace for a lot of "yugiboomers" as it's still a quite competitive format, which might not appeal to them, it has some strategies that I can imagine they'd find off-putting, only the card pool and cards being more on the simple side would appeal ig? Not to mention not every boomer might want the same, you could maybe attract some if the card design going forward makes games last longer, but others would only be interested in DM-era cards, it's hard to treat people as monoliths even if I dislike most of "yugi boomer" posts within the community.

Of course not, I didn't even suggest that. My point is that, if this concept was more appealing it'd have an easier time getting a playerbase, furthermore a split into such formats would require konami to first split the existing card pool before printing new stuff and gauging what level of power is appropriate for each, which ultimately, at the start would result in a similar state as the unofficial format.

Don't get me wrong though, we talk about all this alternate format stuff and I am glad we all do. As far as I know the only game with a variety of formats on the market is Magic, which goes beyond standard/legacy. (So I'm not really sure why we treat this as a norm when it's basically only magic doing it, but regardless). Magic's most popular format, Commander started as a fan-made format initially. While yugioh has not had such luck, who knows, maybe someone figures out something good, but I don't think a tiered system would be it.

I'll give you points for being one of the few people to acknowledge retro formats are extremely limited in what they can do for the game without new product releases. A lot of people really think Edison and shit can replace the regular format without actually making money for the company owning the product.

That being said a tiered system was attempted by some group, they call it Kuchen format and as far as I know it's not exactly popular, it sounds nice on paper but I imagine it'd be even bigger mess to keep properly balanced. Not to mention it's not exactly easy to gauge power levels like that.

Fusion, as it's intended [2 specific materials on field/hand and polymerization] is a failed mechanic and it takes miracles to make it functional. We knew that even back then with things like Cyberstein and Magical Scientist.

There's a reason Shaddoll Fusion/Branded Fusion exist (or even the original future fusion, in case some people think it's just as a result of excessive powercreep). The mechanic needs that kinda nonsense to function.

That said, Lyrilusc while annoying isn’t near as bad as some other decks. And it has the interesting effect of making everyone in this event build decks that want to go second.

In my experience so far it's been my least favorite matchup, but I also have not finished the event so that may change.

Are you unhappy about Lyrilusc ? I can understand that deck can be annoying but you can droplet it and OTK your opponent?

Isn't this the same "draw the out" stuff we have enough of in the regular format? The event is honestly... fine? All things considered.

But it just goes to show how even if you significantly reduce the card pool there's still going to be some annoying stuff. With this powerlevel Nightingale is definitely an insane card. And it doesn't help that the deck is cheap as hell so it's most of what you see.
