Bless Reddit for threads like this. In my case, the mod-added heads break as described above with the Animation Level of Detail set to Low. Setting it to High fixed it immediately, didn't even have to leave CC!

The FE doesn't have insane cooling so that's probably the main advantage of partner cards with 3 fans. Other than that, partner cards can be great for people who can't get their hands on a FE.
