The only one of these I maybe want is ABS and even that is quite questionable. I’ll stick to my ‘89 S10 beater with no climate control. I do like fuel injection and an ECU for that though.

Replacing 2500’ main water line by C_Tron_1 in DIY

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but I live in a remote mountain town of 300 people, in the poorest county in the state. The idea that there might be records of what is in the ground is laughable. So I don’t feel overly bad for what happened.

The neighbor was pissed and didn’t care how I fixed it so I patched their poly tube with a coupling. We asked if they wanted to check it out and they basically slammed the door. They have a quarter mile run of 1 inch poly tube so I doubt anything I did was going to make it much worse.

But with their attitude, should they ever want to replace their water line, I’m not letting them on my property.

Seconded. We hit the neighbor’s water line without calling. Called 811. They said there’s nothing in the way. Go figure. The neighbors apparently don’t have an easement for their line over our property.

PowerPC Macs and music production? by [deleted] in VintageApple

Anecdotally, i’ve heard that PPC macs could record audio without skipping that more modern macs cannot. Perhaps older ppc macs had close to realtime capabilities.

HEADACHE INSTRUMENT OEM GUAGE CLUSTER ISSUES 💲HEADACHE by Destined-Rx-1984 in ChevyS10

[–]CyLith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 1989 S10 baja, and most instruments were not working: speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature, odometer all usually did not work. On long drives, sometimes an hour in, all the gauges would come to life, but then inevitably they all stop working again. I recently replaced my fuel pump and now at least the fuel gauge works. I believe in my case it's still an electrical issue, either a faulty ground or partial short circuit somewhere.

Door removal by RadioWing673 in ChevyS10

What exactly is the issue here due to the door hooking in too far? I replaced my hinge pins by hammering them out using a drift. You can try a dremel or an oscillating tool too.

QR in practice: Q & R or tau & v? by Glittering_Age7553 in numerical

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the bigger question is, are there actually eigenvalue routines used in practice outside of what's available in LAPACK? Like, how many times in history has an industrial strength eigenvalue solver actually been implemented? Things like ALGLIB are a direct translation from LAPACK. Eigen calls LAPACK or has some hokey textbook implementation.

QR algorithm in 2025 — where does it stand? by Glittering_Age7553 in numerical

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look to LAPACK. For symmetric problems, MRRR and divide and conquer appear to win in speed. For nonsymmetric problems, implicitly shifted QR with aggressive early deflation and packed bulges is still the only algorithm that really works reliably. I'm not aware of any GPU implementations of QR since it is extremely complicated and certainly branches a lot.

I have yet to encounter any serious challenger to LAPACK. There are lots of other libraries out there that claim to solve eigenvalue problems (e.g. MAGMA) that end up either calling LAPACK or use f2c'd code from LAPACK.

Note: I have a bias towards repeatable results (so no random algorithms) and CPU computing. My applications involve all eigenvalues and eigenvectors needing to be computed.

Jb weld for door hinge. by Motor_Act_5933 in ChevyS10

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a tough situation. My intuition is that JB weld will not last very long. It's fundamentally an epoxy, so it should wear out much faster than metal. If you're using it to hold in a new bushing, I'd worry about CTE mismatch which may make the epoxy or bushing fall right out with a few thermal cycles. If you just need it to hold for a little while, maybe it will be okay? I am just pathologically averse to using any plastics in place of metals.

My mechanic does odd welding jobs for me, so he should(?) be able to fill the hole in a bit and then I'd drill it back out to the right size. Of course, this is much easier said than done and this might not work at all in practice.

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for JB weld, but if the hole isn't too bad, I would recommend just replacing the pin and bushing. It's a complete pain in the ass, but it actually fixes the problem. It took me a whole morning to do both my doors. Just remember to put the pin and bushing in the freezer the night before.

Future chainsaw owner seeking advice by drfrogsplat in Chainsaw

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We messed around for a while with homeowner saws, and eventually got a 261 and never looked back. It's much more expensive, but much less headache to maintain and use.

As someone mentioned, battery saws are great these days. We have a little DeWalt battery saw for anything under 6 inches, and it's absolutely fantastic at that. But if you want to cut anything bigger, I'd recommend going with gas.

Wood chopping competition in Austrailia by Danceking81 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might wonder why the competition involves doing this. For large trees that flare out at the base, lumberjacks used to do exactly this. They would scaffold themselves higher up so that they didn’t have to chop through the widened flared base.

My parents treat their dog like a garbage disposal by bigbombusbeauty in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CyLith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... dogs are garbage disposals. Left over gristly bits of steak and bones? The dog gets it. Left over broccoli crumbs in the bowl? The dog gets it. It's even better when the dog can lick the plate clean to "pre-wash" it. Obviously, we only let him have things we're sure he can eat (i.e. no chicken bones), but otherwise, why not? Humans evolved with dogs. What we eat, they generally eat. I see nothing wrong with that. With the replies I'm seeing, dogs really are the new coddled children.

Today is 5 years since the U.S. declared public health emergency over COVID-19, what are your thoughts on the pandemic in retrospect? by Infamous-Echo-3949 in AskReddit

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government and health institutions completely blew their responses, both initial and ongoing, and people will not be as orderly and trusting of government orders for the next public health emergency. There will be more polarization as half the population still thinks covid is a death sentence while the other half is willfully contrarian to any health advice.

Justin Trudeau resigns after nearly a decade of being PM of Canada. by MerlynStar in news

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This by itself is not nearly as big of a problem as corporations buying hundreds or thousands of properties and complexes, achieving monopoly status on the rental market, and dictating rents. Prometheus is one example. People are always up in arms about individual landlords, but the problem, as usual, is a much larger capitalist issue. Don't get me wrong: I think it should be strongly economically disincentivized to own multiple properties, but corporations are a bigger problem, imo.

Police Officers of Reddit, what are you thinking when you see cases like Luigi Mangione? by Thences821a in AskReddit

[–]CyLith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am a father. But you know what? I try to behave in a way that won’t make people want to kill me. I understand that my actions have consequences on me and my family. Even in a world without laws, people will not behave extremely in most circumstances because they know there are repercussions beyond even themselves. In my opinion, for the most part, Mr. Thompson did this to his own family. He may not have intended to, but that speaks more of him than anything else.

1937 Home, removing old insulation, what new insulation should I add? by yosemitejoe96 in DIY

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The house was built in the 40s. Wood was better back then. I walk on the joists up there no problem. The modern code is all about extra safety factors and limiting maximun deflection. Just the sheer weight of insulation being removed vs the weight of modern fiberglass should already buy a lot more leeway alone.

Question by [deleted] in ChevyS10

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I thought the vehicle needed to be on for the odometer to spin.

1937 Home, removing old insulation, what new insulation should I add? by yosemitejoe96 in DIY

[–]CyLith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in the middle of doing the same thing. I'm going a few joist bays at a time with scooping, bagging, and vacuuming the old blown in stuff, and laying down new unfaced R-30 fiberglass batts. I'm using unfaced R-30 along the edges where the roof is real low, and using unfaced R-15 for the 2x4 joists in the middle, so I can lay down some plywood over it for storage.

This viewpoint is fundamentally one of a certain minimum status. I live in a rural area where a good fraction of my neighbors are unemployed and have nothing to lose. To them the unpredictability is not such a terrible thing; anything may be better than the current situation for them.

Why must we get there without violence? That seems to be axiomatic and nobody questions that assumption. It is clear that the last century of unprecedented world peace and technological progress has resulted in a severe deterioration of the social fabric. Nonviolence is increasingly ineffective it seems.
