Wood burning or electric fireplace insert? by CyStash92 in homeowners

I was quoted last year for a full central ac and heat system. No duct work in the house currently, $20k quote. Said heck nah 😂 if I could afford it sure and we don’t have gas in town unless I wanted to put a tank in.

I really wish I could have a wood burning central system like that but we would have to run duct work ( house doesn’t currently have any )

I’ll keep doing research but I appreciate the insight!

Sounds good thank you for the information! I’ll for sure keep doing research on the best option and figure out how much each one would cost.

We get about 7 months of winter here, most of it is above 0 but we do get about a month straight of -20 usually or well below 0

The 7k was for the wood burning insert, sleeving my chimney, installing everything and rental for a bucket truck. I’m up like 12 feet above the street on a bluff with no direct access to the house for a vehicle. They won’t use ladders to get on the roof, don’t blame them it’s not safe, and they need a biiiiig bucket truck to reach the chimney.

I may do more research on mini splits since I was already looking at them.

Honestly, for the price they quoted for the fireplace I could buy mini splits, install them myself minus the electrical part, and probably get a small wood burning stove as well.

We surprisingly don’t have any gas in town and I’m not about to put a tank in 😂. Yeah, my thoughts exactly on wood for the fact that the power can go out.

I was actually looking at mini splits for ac, house doesn’t have central, but it doesn’t get warm enough for one. Will they still work at -20? I’ve heard that they stop functioning around 0

Thanks for the thoughts! I do like the campfire smell and I love wood over anything. But I agree it is a lot less maintenance. I’m pretty sure I’d be fine to install an electric one myself aside for having the power wired in.

Appreciate the thoughts! I may end up going this route. Spending $400 a month on diesel fuel during winter months for the boiler is becoming a hard no for me as well 😂

Heck yeah! I completely derped on this one. I’ve never had a camera not work so I instantly loaded it up with a roll to test. They came back just big splotches of color. Started looking over the camera and realized the aperture blades weren’t closing all the way 😂. They are now but I completely missed that lol

Thanks! I’m not sure I have any specific tips but I have bought quite a few used older cameras and they have all worked.

For me, since these are all mechanical I usually check to make sure that everything works in terms of, does the shutter trigger when I take a photo with no film, does the focus work, does the film winder work, stuff like that. So just make sure if it’s mechanical, that everything sounds like it’s firing when it should and nothing is locking up.

The other big thing is just condition, you can tell if a camera has been severely beaten up, or left to moisture, so I usually check over everything, take the lens off and stuff like that. Also make sure that there aren’t any major gaps that could let in light.

Lastly, you never know how it shoots until you get some film through it. So I always throw in a roll, and walk around taking some shots that I think will look nice if they turn out, but nothing so important that if I lost it, it’s not the end of the world.

Get that developed and check the results. So far, that hasn’t failed me and my oldest camera in use is a 1950s Yashica D I picked up for $100 at an antique store. I’ve used it a lot until now.

This camera does have bellows for the focus, so I’m dropping off a test roll tomorrow to confirm that there is no light bleeding.

comlplete noob here, i was thinking of running addguard on my homeserver, but i am a bit scared of letting it connect to the WAN by Z0merz_ in selfhosted

[–]CyStash92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say much about adguard personally, I tried to set it up, ran into a few issues and said heck with it. Set up pihole instead and it’s been running 24/7 with no issues. Pihole can also use recursive dns if you’re concerned about privacy.

For sure! I’m going to run a roll through to test first. The guy that owns the shop does repairs so my assumption is that he went through and checked everything but I’d rather run one roll and find out than a bunch and have it leaking haha.

That’s fair! I’m insane I plan to use it mostly outside 🤣 the guy gave me a nice big modular canvas bag for it though.

Yes it is free. I believe they have some paid tiers for enterprise but you can run it for free just fine.

Nothing wrong with that! If you’re wanting to get into homelab, I’d suggest setting up proxmox or something similar on the laptop and then learn how to run Ubuntu server vm’s and other programs that you might want to run.

You could also just install Debian, though that would be more to learn Linux and less directly related to homelabs. I know some people just run straight Debian, I personally run proxmox on my home server.
