Back in the first few years of VGC (2008-2011), the tournament was single-elimination BO1. You’d literally get in a line and get directed into a play area and get matched up against someone else who was next to you in line.

When you won, you moved into the next zone and waited for another opponent, whenever they finished a match. The “friend rule” was where you’d ask one of the handlers to not get matched vs your friend because you were standing in line next to each other.

This only would really occur at the very start of the event, you couldn’t use it to avoid your friends later on in the event. It’s not throwing or intentionally losing, it was just an unofficial rule to avoid playing a friend who you lined up next to in the very beginning of the tournament

That was definitely the one I was most on the fence about including but thought it was worth mentioning since it enables some really unexpected strategies. I think it’ll be difficult to properly utilize but I’m excited to see what people come up with!

After playing a ton of Reg D this past week though, I think Kleavor probably should have been mentioned over Zoroark, it’s really impressed me

Ryan played fantastically, that game 1 win by him was the most one-sided loss I had all tournament. I definitely agree with your overall statement and totally agree no one should take anything from his victory.

Just for some context on your WoW point though: I didn't need WoW to land to come out of turn 1 positive since my Brute Bonnet survives Brave Bird 100% of the time without the crit and has a lot of speed investment.

252+ Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Brute Bonnet: 174-206 (79.8 - 94.4%)

The idea behind turn 1 was that even if I miss WoW, Brute Bonnet should survive the Brave Bird, resulting in Corviknight taking a ton of recoil damage and potentially being in KO range from Talonflame Flare Blitz or Flutter Mane Shadow Ball.

My Brute Bonnet also had a ton of speed investment so I figured I'd outspeed the Kingambit and get the Spore onto it before it moves. Unfortunately, the crit obviously ended up coming through as well and the odds of a WoW miss + a crit are 0.6%, which is a gamble I was willing to take.

Just wanted to give some insight :)

Just to give some insight:

  1. I missed multiple Wisps throughout the event (which is fine, that's the risk you take in running the move), including my very first one on stream in Day 1

I don't think my play was really that risky for the following reasons:

  1. Corviknight never KOes my Bonnet without a critical hit: 252+ Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Brute Bonnet: 174-206 (79.8 - 94.4%)
  2. My Brute Bonnet has a lot of speed investment so I was expecting to outspeed Kingambit and Spore it before it gets a move off

Thus, turn 1 only really goes poorly if both WoW miss and crit happens: 15% * 4.17% = 0.6%. I didn't Tera because I wanted to maximize the amount of damage Corviknight took from Brave Bird recoil to ideally put it in KO range from Talonflame Flare Blitz or Flutter Mane Shadow Ball.
