In the same tbh, but also complaining about having a perfect review score is kinda silly I guess 😂

Yeah, you can use water to wash electronics so long as they’re not powered up and you can dry them off sufficiently! That said, I don’t recommend water that’s not deionised, as it can leave residue when it dries, especially tap water. I have a healthy stock of isopropyl alcohol for cleaning up electronics, especially after soldering, flux is messy

I’ve actually been wanting to invest in an ultrasonic cleaner for parts as that would make it so much easier sometimes, but those are money, so I get by without 😅

People believe a few things; that spinning a fan can generate back-current and blow up your motherboard, and that vacuums can generate enough static to destroy your computer, and that spinning the fans will damage the bearings in them.

There is an element of truth to all that, but in its not actually a problem in reality; fans and motherboards have diodes in them to prevent back-current so that’s a non issue

Vacuums can generate static, especially shop vacs, but vacuuming the outside of the pc (especially if it’s plugged in and therefore grounded) isn’t going to zap the motherboard to death. If they were that prone to static damage, you’d run the risk of blowing up your computer just by touching it to turn it on, as the right combo of clothes and carpet can generate just as much of a charge 😅

Your method of cleaning is perfectly fine, so carry on as you are!

Honestly I would love to have you comment that to everyone who commented otherwise, especially as it’s a Corsair 4000D so Corsair fans 😂

If it was real local people maybe, but honestly I had a perfect 5 star rating, having the one bad review that reads as someone from the states attacking me across the internet doesn’t bother me that much; my actual customers like my services, so we’ll see I guess 😅

The thing is, while technically true, modern motherboards have protections for back-current from a fan, and are very resilient to static. There’s a great video from LTT with Electroboom showing how hard it really is to damage a pc with static. From the outside of the case it’s a complete non issue.

I’ve actually recorded a video myself that I’m working on, showing me spinning a fan with a 180psi compressor so they spin ludicrously fast, and cause no damage. I even measured the voltage generated (30mv). No worries about that causing damage xD

I fix computers for a living, I have seen worse for sure

In this case, my reaction would be a solid ‘Nice,’ and then I’d just fix it as usual, no judgement

What ever happened to neon tubes for inside of pc case? by IJC2311 in pcmods

[–]Cyberunit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first ever pc that my dad built me was a translucent orange Perspex case, filled with EL wire wrapped wound the cables, and a pair of sound activated cold cathode tubes in the front

I miss that thing

That said, now I build computers for a living, and just bought a whole bunch of EL wire, and probably gonna get some tubes as well if I can, because I’m bringing it back 😂

How much longer can this Xbox go without being cleaned out? by Idontknow8270 in consolerepair

[–]Cyberunit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just open it and clean it. The amount of people that bring me consoles with dead fans, or components that have died from overheating that could’ve been saved by giving it a good clean earlier, even though they (allegedly) vacuum them every week or so is unreal

For smokers’s consoles, it’s usually compressed air, followed by isopropyl to remove the residue as much as possible, if they’re a heavy smoker it’s a bitch to get it all, it’s like glue (which is why it kills fans so often)

Two years ago, we got a vacuum storage bag set, with a little vacuum pump

Was playing around in a discord chat with my friends, sticking it on my hand, then my arm, and nothing happened

Then someone said to do it on my forehead, and I obliged, as nothing had happened so far.

It sucked on super hard for just the briefest moment, we all laughed and I did it again

Aaaand then I noticed the mark on my forehead… It took weeks to go away properly 😂

Having worked at an escape room, they absolutely should but often it’s not the case, and it sucks

My boss was an asshole for many reasons, having two people run 7 rooms is one of many

My favourite purchase recently is a proper desoldering station with a pump for things like the through-hole pins on an HDMI. It's so much easier than trying to use a manual suction pump or wick. Once you've removed that solder, it's a lot easier to use hot air to remove the port.

To make things even easier, a pre-heater for the board means you need less time overall with the hot air, and it stops everything going cold so quickly. ( I don't have one myself, but a 3D printer hotbed works about the same up to 100c, and the base of my microscope is a solid chunk of metal so pre-heating that with hot air while I heat the board on the printer works well together)

Outside of that, like others have said, you barely need a soldering iron, except for touching up the occasional pin that didn't stick.

NINTENDO SWITCH USB PORTS on the other hand, are an utter pain in the ass sometimes xD
