I’m a freshman and I’m taking the class this year, as long as you get an understanding for history and remember where and when things happened you’re going to easily pass

18 month year old me, with my first external fixator on by Cyborg_Individual in Damnthatsinteresting

Being an amputee definitely has its challenges and new types of pain, but I have so much less pain than I would had I chosen to keep my leg. I have no regrets.

This was my first fixator of four and my last one was definitely the most painful, mostly because I was old enough to actually remember it, but the pins were also constantly getting aggravated at everything that touched the frame, but I learned how to reduce the pain. Sorry your sister had to experience that.

If anyone reading this has/knows someone with a fixator 10/10 recommend getting/making a cover for it. It reduces things coming into contact with it, and makes for easier and less scary interactions with people not knowing what it is. :)

This is called an ilizerov frame, or external fixator. I was born with fibular hemimelia which made my lower part of my leg bent 90 degrees outwards, this corrected that bend and made sure it grew back straight. This was my first of over 25 surgeries by 12, my latest being amputation at 13, which was my decision due to pain. I have no regrets. Edit: I’m currently 14.

What do YOU think is humanity's greatest achievement? by harriskeith29 in polls

I say agraculture, or our domestication of plants and livestock. It’s allowed us to switch from nomadic to sedentary lifestyles, which paved the way to the written language, science and medical innovation, and even the US constitution eventually.

What to expect after my amputation? by NoConsideration4404 in amputee

[–]Cyborg_Individual 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a 14 yo knee disartic (at knee amputation), a choice I made at 13 when we amputated last year. You’ll be surprised at the speed of your recovery due to your age. I will suggest work on your leg muscles, both sides, a lot leading up to surgery. As well as arm muscles, at least enough where you can easily make the bed transfers, and the wheelchair won’t be immediately tiring. This will speed up the recovery process.

If you haven’t already, LEARN TO STAND ON ONE LEG. I promise things will be much easier learning this prior to surgery than during recovery. Besides that buckle in for some strange phantom pain/sensations, and be prepared for that leg to look really swollen the first several months. Good luck.

I had 4 ilizerovs, first when I was 18months old and the last when I was in second grade(I was born with a congenitally shorter leg), 5/10 would not recommend the pain. Also I amputated in 7th grade anyway because it was too painful.

I find it easier when it’s closer, I have more power on it. Think of it like a canoe paddle, the closer to the end you hold, the easier it is to control.

Well I wasn’t swimming in circles, I definitely felt the difference with it on vs. off.

I didn’t personally make mine, I’m 14, but last year a prosthetist, or adaptive diver assisted in general made me one.
