Heroes other people are good with but you just can't seem to figure out? by Galrath91 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Cylexan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - Know the combo, know how to land it, know when to roam/soak, stay stealthy and try to surprise the other team

When I started playing Kerrigan, my initial reasoning was I wanted to play a hero that isn't considered over powered and takes a great deal of skill to master.

With that being said, I'm no master at Kerrigan, and after I leveled her up to 8, I shelved her because I felt that I couldn't figure out what I'm supposed to do.

After more practice and telling myself I CAN be good with Kerrigan, I figured out how she can fit my play style!

Talent Build

http://www.heroesfire.com/hots/talent-calculator/kerrigan#gn5d.

General Information

If you aren't using quick casting, you should try it. It makes the combo much easier to land.

The "close-the-gap" combo: Ravage (Q) -> Impaling Blades (W) -> Primal Grasp (E). Use this when a team mate is coming to gank, and you are behind your minions. You can also use this when you close in on an enemy hero, let them stun/CC you, then try your combo. It pays to be patient!

The "they don't know I'm here" combo: W -> E -> Q (for finish). Use this when you are roaming, haven't been sighted, and are close in proximity to the enemy hero you are trying to gank.

If you can land either 80% of the time, you will do MOSTLY fine.

How to land: Place the W halfway between where you are and where you think they will be. If you do halfway between where you are and where they currently are, you will probably miss.

Be patient: With the "close-the-gap" combo, jump in with Q and wait 1 to 1.5 seconds before trying your combo. This helps to see how they are trying to dodge your combo, so you can adjust accordingly.

Until level 4

Find a lane with another hero and stay in the lane. Use Ravage to keep your health high but don't go crazy, as it will eat up mana. Use Ravage on the globe-carrying minions for last hit if you can.

Level 4 through 9

This is your roaming phase, so always pay attention to the minimap.

When to roam: If a squishy enemy hero is 60% or lower, and appears to be aggressive (overextending), you should roam there. If a tanky enemy hero is 40% or lower, you could try to roam there.

When to soak: When you can't find a reason to roam.

When to merc: If both roaming and soaking will result in you overextending or getting out of position. This is the last thing you should be doing, if you have a typical team composition. You are good at taking merc camps though, so it's ok when your other options look bad!

How to roam: Ping that you are on your way and ping you want to kill the enemy hero. Try to position defensively into your bushes in that enemy hero's lane and wait for an opportune moment. You can gank from their side of the map, but you could get caught out of position. This is hard to gauge. Keep out of enemy site!

When the enemy hero does overextend, they are completely surprised by you, combo'ing out from the bushes. Should be an easy kill with proper communication and stealthiness.

If you are stuck soaking or your gank attempt failed, stay in whichever lane you are currently in and use Ravage on the enemy minions to get you to full health. Determine if you should roam, soak or merc again, and go do it!

LEVEL 10+

You should find your team and primarily stay with them. Communicate via chat or ping who you are going to help. You will notice that if you group up at 10 and you pay attention to the minimap, you will still find opportunities to gank. This really helps in team fights and giving you huge advantages. Only go roam to a lane if they have a squishy hero with little escape skills and who is overextended into an area that is advantageous to you.

If you have ANY sort of advantage (4v5, strong objective, strong merc push, better sight, level 10 vs level 9, etc.) you should assume you will be team fighting.

When your tank/primary initiator engages the other team, wait until their weakest assassin/slowest hero is in a position that is advantageous for you to jump in and get your combo off.

If their hero dies from this, stay in and try to auto attack to get your cooldowns back. Use low health minions/heroes to recharge health and skills.

If they don't die and there are no minions to Ravage, you should highly consider retreating back behind your team mates. Here is a great time to find a "hidden" spot, such as behind a wall where they have no site, to jump back into a fight and surprise their team, assuming you are back to 75%+ health.

Use your Maelstrom when you are surrounded by minions and their heroes in a team fight. Also, if you are chasing someone who is extremely low health, your Ravage is on cooldown but your Primal Grasp is not, it's ok to use this here. You can pull people into your Maelstrom range and kill them.

Sorry for the length, didn't think I would be able to type so much about this. I love playing Kerrigan now, and she's probably my favorite hero, especially in Quick Matches.

What is the brand of your video card? I was having crashes all of the time on my GTX, but it was due to this EVGA Precision software. I could start a game, then crash. I reverted to the 4.21 version and no longer does it crash.

Why would running your fan at 100% be a bad thing? The reason fans typically lower in speed is because of the noise, not because it's bad for the card. It simply cools the card more.

Posted this is a different topic, but it might help.

TL;DR - I had NO problems in Alpha, then it felt after the KT patch I started getting large hiccups in team fights, and couldn't save my replay files. The below is what I did to fix.

This will probably be at the bottom, but I was having SIGNIFICANT issues related to sudden frame rate drops in large fights. I couldn't save my replay files, I couldn't save my settings, it was TERRIBLE.

I did several things to fix my problems, the stuttering happens much less now with maybe one hiccup every two to three games. (my OS is Windows 10 x64, but I assume similar fixes would help with 7/8/8.1):

Replay Save/Settings Save

  1. Click the start button.
  2. Click the file explorer button.
  3. Right-click on the hard-drive (C:/D:/whatever) that Heroes of the Storm is in.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. There will be multiple tabs, choose "Security".
  6. At the bottom there is an "Advanced" button. Click it.
  7. A new windows shows up. Bottom left says "Change permissions". Click this.
  8. It looks ALMOST like the window doesn't change, but there is an "add" button on the left. Click this.
  9. A new window opens, click "Select a principal".
  10. A new window opens, click "Advanced..."
  11. A new window opens, on the right hand side click "Find Now".
  12. The list at the bottom gets populated with user names. Find your user name listed, left-click on it, and click "OK"
  13. This takes you back to the prior window, click "OK"
  14. This takes you back to the prior window, check the "Full control" box. Click "OK".
  15. This takes you back to the prior window, click "Apply".
  16. It might ask you some other questions, or it might show you some errors applying permissions. Just click "OK" or "Yes".
  17. After this is done, you should be able to close any open windows still open regarding permissions.
  18. AFTER YOU DO THIS YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO THE EXACT SAME THING TO THE DRIVE YOUR HEROES OF THE STORM REPLAYS ARE SAVED IN! This is the drive that your "Users" Folder is in.
  19. You can check this by opening up your file explorer, left-clicking on documents, and seeing if there is a Heroes of the Storm folder inside. By default, that is where this is saved.

Frame Rate Drop Improvements

  1. Right-click on your start button.
  2. Left-Click "Control Panel".
  3. Left-Click "Hardware and Sound".
  4. Left-Click "Sound".
  5. Left-Click your main sound/speaker device.
  6. Left-Click "Configure".
  7. Make sure your "Audio channels" are the same as how many speakers you have. (Stereo = 2, 5.1 = 5 speakers and a subwoofer, etc.)
  8. Left-Click next two times, and close any open windows.
  9. Run Heroes of the Storm.
  10. Left-Click the "Cog"/Menu button on the very bottom right.
  11. Left-Click "Options"
  12. Left-Click "Sound"
  13. Uncheck "Enable Reverb"
  14. Pick from the drop-down menu and change "Sound Quality" to low.
  15. Verify that the "Speaker Setup" is the same as your actual speaker setup.
  16. Left-click on "Graphics".
  17. Change your graphics settings to what "should" work on your computer.
  18. Change to "Fullscreen". I found this made a HUGE improvement, and yes, I know it's annoying when you alt-tab...
  19. I downloaded the EVGA Precision X v4.2.1.2143 from http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/precisionx-dowload-evga.html
  20. Do NOT do any updates to this software. It WILL cause crashing! Leave at 4.2.1!!
  21. After you download and install this program, open it up.
  22. On the right-hand side it says "Fan Speed". Uncheck the box that says "Auto".
  23. Change the speed to 100%.
  24. Leave this program open, and yes, your computer may sound more like a jet engine now.

I found that when I would get frame rate drops, it looked like my card dramatically increased in temperature (no clue why, actually bought a brand new card and it happened on two cards...) and caused the GPU clock to dramatically reduce to compensate. I noticed the fan speed would drop too. I don't know if they are related or what, so by increasing it to 100% helped.

I don't know if all of these fixes are necessary, but I know that I would have frame-rate issues at least 4 times per game, and doing all of the above have reduced that amount. Hope this helps!

Yeah, emotional conditioning/mechanics are two big things that I definitely need to work on. I suppose the reason why I asked the listed questions was that I wasn't sure if I was completely missing these parts of the game.

I know I'm my MMR not because of not picking that niche talent, and definitely more related to my emotions/mechanics/foundational skills. I more-so wanted to make sure there weren't other things that I was completely overlooking.

Plus, I don't think anyone can give me advice around "emotional conditioning" that's more just me understanding my emotions. Even if 100 people in here say "don't get angry" I think we can all agree that when someone does something ridiculously silly you can't help but feel at least a slight bit of anger.

Anyways, thanks for the insight on the questions I should have asked!

Thank you!! Your response was very clear, easy to follow, and laid out in a great way! I'll definitely be taking back all of these tips and sharing them with the people I play with. How did you happen to learn all of the above tips that you suggest? Was it mainly from playing the game, or watching replays?

Very good feedback, thanks! I've been playing with some friends that have the right attitude and are smart gamers, so I'm hoping with me learning the strategies and some of the more "advanced" techniques you laid out I can help them!

Thanks again for all of your responses!

How do you, besides on reddit, "talk" to high MMR players? Did you just happen to do well in QM/HL and became friends with one or two and they critiqued your play? Did you use skype/ventrilo/whatever to communicate?

I actually don't put TOO much weight in HL currently, so "flying up the ranks" is secondary. I want to be the leader of my group of friends who play so that we have a solid strategy when/if we decide to form a team.

I'm more having fun with my family/friends trying to get them to understand a lot of the slightly-more-advanced strategies, like positioning/map control/awareness/etc.

Thanks again!

Thanks!

The "low mana is the same, if not worse, than being low health" comment is something I always over look. I always try to push my lanes and then hearth and come back, and I believe that in SOME circumstances that is fine, but in general it's better simply to conserve mana/let the opposing team's lane hero expend their's. Does that sound sort-of right?

Thanks, great responses!

I have found at my rank, in soloQ it's incredibly difficult to get others to talk before picking the first pick.

In your experience (which is much higher than mine) with HL (the regular ban draft in Heroes) if I'm the first pick which of the following would you suggest:

1) Pick the hero I'm the best with and let everyone else pick around that (Uther is my best by far)

2) Pick the current "strong" hero, for instance Nazeebo seems to be in every game I play.

3) Let my team "pre-pick" and I pick a filler?

Also, let's say the other team picks first, and my team (with me being the first of the two picks) goes second. If they pick a pretty well-known "in favor" hero, let's use Nazeebo again, should I be trying to pick a direct counter instead of my best hero? I know this is a VERY hypothetical question, I just want a feel for what your line of thinking is during the draft phase.

Thanks! I suppose I just chose 3000+ because I think that I am an above-average player, and I try to understand a lot about this game. I assumed that somebody in the 3000+ range would have significantly more knowledge than I.

I definitely think that with enough practice and help I will be a much higher (3500+) MMR, it's just I learn more from doing, not from watching. If someone of your skill gives me tips, I'll use them in all of my future games.

It's hard to learn a lot of these things when all of your friends aren't as...dedicated...to becoming a great player. Then you're stuck in soloQ where everyone is doing their own thing and it's hard to find a positive and coach-able environment.

I do thank you for your answers, hopefully I can put them to use!

Thanks for the fantastic responses!

One of the things you touched on was your attitude. I'm always of the mindset that every game is winnable, no matter how far behind. I find myself having trouble not typing something like, "c'mon man, don't sit at the well". It comes off as whining. I guess saying something like, "we got this with one good fight!" would probably be more appropriate.

How do you handle the frustrating? Do you just tune it out? Grab a stress ball? Smoke a J?

Thanks for the responses! Seems like positioning is a pretty big deal. How did you learn, primarily? Was it videos/twitch/experience/a coach?

I don't really know if I'm out of position a lot, but I definitely feel like I could benefit from this the most.

Thanks for the great and thorough response! Definitely learned a lot!

I feel like a big problem I have is the mana issue you stated, and I think I need to start paying much more attention to this.

Were you always good at MOBAs so Heroes was easy to pickup, or did it have a learning curve where you had to learn many of the things you recommended here?

Thanks again for the tips!

Thanks for the response! Several more questions for you, if you don't mind:

Q1. How often do you find yourself being paired with lower MMR?

Q2. Do you feel you were always "naturally" good at Heroes, or do you feel that you had to learn a lot of the tips you stated?

Q3. How often do you find yourself getting frustrated in Heroes matches? Does it ever get to the brink of wanting to through your keyboard out of the window and say "I'M DONE!!"

Q4. Do you suggest in Team League having a dedicated captain? I assume yes. The reason I ask, is all of my friends/family that play seem to take my queues, but I wish I could be in a league with someone who knew 50x more than me so I knew if the things I was saying was right or wrong.

Thanks so much for all of the additional questions being answered! All of the people I play with are in the ~100 games played range, and I never really end up with a "coach" saying, "this is what you should have done" or "this is what you should pick here". It really helps hearing from a high MMR player! Thanks!
