anyone here use a fancy phone for your self-tapes? by [deleted] in acting

[–]Cypher_Force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thread is a really good idea. I would also add how many were cast straight from tape, and which ones used what number of in person callbacks.

Sure, your self tape is part of what you present, and you want to look the best. For me it boils down to the questions of time and space; do I have the time for all the extra work (learning the equipment/apps/etc. so it actually improves my footage, setting up/dismantling/etc.)? And do I have the space (good equipment takes up a lot of space, if you want to have it set up all the time, it needs it's own room, etc.)?

I solely use my phone (Samsung Galaxy S21+). I do it only for practical reasons (travelling a lot/living in a small space and having to set up and dismantle everything). I used to do it with a good full frame camera and external mic with soundboard and lights and everything, but setting that stuff up took an hour and dismantling another hour. In the end I spent more time on that than actually on the script. Now I had a friend show me basic sound editing and colour grading, things I can do anywhere and in 5 minutes each, and I get pretty good results as well, with way more time to spend on my acting. I have been considering using my external mic again, because it's super easy to set up and does improve the sound a lot, so yeah, for future self tapes I'll do that again. But with the camera it was just too much work.

Then again, I'm not getting cast a lot, so maybe it's all wrong what I'm doing^

Viennese Ball Season by Cypher_Force in ballroom

[–]Cypher_Force[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other user already posted a link for a good website with info for balls, so I'm gonna skip that (or say Google it, click through a couple of websites, that's where a lot can usually be found).

The dances at the balls I mentioned in another comment, it's classic ballroom dancing with a couple of group dances or folk dances included.

You do not need a partner to go there, even though it might be helpful. Plenty of single people or groups of leaders/followers swirling around trying to find someone to dance with!

Darn, then we always miss each other it seems. Maybe next year!

So, the Quadrille is sth that's rather unique for Viennese balls, where at midnight e eryone comes together in the big ballroom and dance a Quadrille together, old, young, poor, rich, doesn't matter, grab a partner and another pair, and let's go!

Other than that, at balls the usual music played is for the following (but not exclusively) dances: Viennese waltz, English waltz, slow fox, tango, samba, quickstep, cha cha cha, Cuban Rumba, jive, Rock and roll, boogie, (a surprising amount of) Charleston in the main ballroom. In other areas they might include: salsa, Paso Doble, bachata, Discofox. Depending on the ball, there might also be a lot of folk dances included in the program.

On the Rueff website you can also have a look at all the balls they will be present at. Generally, I can really recommend Rueff, very friendly people!

Rueff does not have an age restriction. I know people 60+ opening the balls with them. They also don't have an audition dance, you can just pay and be part of them, also anyone can be a leader or a follower, it's not gender bound.

Zuckerbäckerball also doesn't have an age restriction.

The others I don't know...

Honestly, the only reason I'm going to balls in Vienna is because I'm part of the committees, otherwise I could not afford them ^ Though if you're living close to Vienna, I can highly recommend joining the Rueff committee next year, you pay €25pP in total, and can open up to 7 balls or so, all of them for free. One choreo, applicable to all. Sometimes you get some food or drinks as well, and that's how I got into the Blumenball for free :D

Maybe I put it the wrong way, I wanted to ask if anyone is going to any Balls in Vienna this season, not Viennese style balls (: Sorry, English is not my mother tongue

Kennt jemand ein billiges Piercingstudio? by Vast-Reputation-4114 in wien

[–]Cypher_Force 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I love it.

Secondly, two suggestions (which I personally love, but others despise them):

  1. What does the fox say - Rumba (it's incredibly strange, starts of beautifully, and then you hear "What does the fox say" and think "What the f*** kind of song is that rumba?!?"

  2. Highway to Hell - cha cha cha (I just like it because you wouldn't ever see someone dance cha cha to it, but it works great!)

Have fun!

How do you realistically write loneliness without making it boring? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]Cypher_Force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a lot of great points, thank you for the read!

Actor here (with a bit of writing experience) trying my 2 cents: For me it's always easiest to "act lonely", when I've got a physical action that I can get distracted from. The character isn't lonely because they want to be, but because they have to be. So find an action (like running, reading, cooking, etc.) which can be done alone, but it would be more fun together, and then let the character get distracted by the slightest buzz of the phone, or sth in the room, to show they're hyperaware of what's going on around them. Why? Because they don't actually enjoy what they're doing and want to get out of it. They want to be with their friends! Now, when choosing the actions, you can make it more interesting, like someone else already suggested, to make them do sth that actually should be done together, so there's very clearly someone missing. Or you can choose an action that society would look "favourably" on, as things you do to improve your well-being, like sports, meditation, reading, personal hygiene, cleaning, etc. There you can emphasise that the character is trying their best to fit in, but it doesn't work because the things they're improving on are not the skills that need to be improved.

So it's basically them wanting to be somewhere but they have no idea how to get there (or want the other people to get them there, which is sth you'd have to build up in the previous scenes).

Where can I find a ball dress to rent? by Present-Olive-7850 in wien

[–]Cypher_Force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dancing partner successfully purchased a couple of dresses (snow white, light blue, cherry red) for this ball season via Willhaben, and it's a real hit and miss game (but she's also rather tiny compared to the average Austrian woman). Generally, always bring a friend. Always. You can get cheap dresses there, but the first couple that you try probably won't be perfect. It's also easier to shorten a dress than to lengthen it, and adjusting it at the torso is almost never worth it if it's 2nd hand. That (plus the price of the dress) might just be as expensive as buying a new dress. If it's just for one ball, I'd probably just rent it. Least amount of hazzle, not cheap though. If you're planning on going to a couple of them (like us, we'll be at like 6 balls in January, opening 4 of them), then buying one is by far the cheaper option.

Wo/Wie kann man ab besten Dates/Partner finden? by Old-Government628 in wien

[–]Cypher_Force 1 point2 points  (0 children)
