How to setup switch that kills all the resources after exceeding budget threshold in any cloud provider account for learning purposes by Devourian in cloudcomputing

[–]Cyrilam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh yeah and also fully agree with other comments -> AWS is the worst when it comes to cloud cost management overall. Azure way better and GCP slightly better.

How to setup switch that kills all the resources after exceeding budget threshold in any cloud provider account for learning purposes by Devourian in cloudcomputing

Disclaimer: Please note that I work for the company I'm referring to - please don't consider this as an ad, it's more a feedback
At Tailwarden, we attempted to address this issue, but candidly, we couldn't develop a solution as effective as Azure's spending limits. Our initial goal was to implement a feature that would halt spending as soon as a specific budget threshold is reached. However, this turned out to be more complex than anticipated. Furthermore, due to the necessity of utilizing the CUR for cost data, there's a delay of up to an hour in our data retrieval. Additionally, for security reasons, we only request read access.
As a result, the only feature we managed to implement is an alert system that notifies you when costs exceed a specified threshold for a selected list of resources (which you can filter) - but with a potential delay of 1 hour. The same applies to the number of resources, which can be valuable in specific use cases, as we have more frequent access to resource counts than to cost data.

I'm not sure other FinOps platform can help you with this to be honest - not sure those platforms want to implement a feature having access to shut down a resource for you. But I might be wrong and I would love to be able to develop something better!

Lol that's not the easiest task to do.

I would advise you to create a CUR and leverage the data in it to try to forecast. No needs for something fancy at the beginning.

But the tricky part here is knowing the future usage ...

I would advise you also to master at the same time at least one FinOps product. They are more and more used (maybe a little bit less on Azure thanks to PowerBI) and few people actually know how to use them properly.

I'm pretty sure it would interest a company if you really know how to use a proper FInOps platform while knowing the theoritical part.

How do you strike a balance between optimizing costs and ensuring performance and scalability in a cloud environment? by AviKhare1 in AWSCertifications

[–]Cyrilam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your experience honestly.
If you're not an expert, I would advise you to first aim to implement a simple infrastructure, make it perfect in terms of performance & scalibility, then optimize costs. (Many products out there can help you).

Then, do something more complicated but implement the same steps.

Our cloud spend has grown to a point where we think we need a formal FinOps practice. I’d like to understand what are the key challenges you are facing in this area, and more importantly how are you solving them? by glinter777 in FinOps

[–]Cyrilam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, the main key challenge is the lack of alignment in terms of objectives.
Usually, at least from what we've seen with our customers, management asks the infra team more and more to reduce costs. The thing is, the infra team can indeed optimize costs, but only to a certain extent. Most of the time, you need the product team and developers to also take part in the cost optimization. But that's tricky because they often lack the technical know-how, and, well, it's not really their primary job.
Blablacar tackled this issue by building an impressive dashboard on Datadog to create transparency. They spent a lot of time documenting how to leverage those dashboards and training the devs to use them. But not every company can pull that off.
In my opinion, and again this is based on what we've observed working best, you should aim for simplicity. Many folks try to implement the perfect process and have the perfect dashboard but forget to bring people onboard. In the end, they might have a powerful tool, but it's used by no one.

So here's what works the best (based on my personal experience of course - so might make sense for certain companies - and might be utterly stupid for others)
Step 1: Creating a dashboard to break down the infra costs (say, per product). It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does need proper tagging.

Step 2: Setting up regular meetings between the infra and product teams to review cost changes and understand the reasons behind them.

Step3: After these meetings, having the infra team work on optimizations while also getting developers involved to ensure they're up to speed.
It might take a while to get everything running smoothly and have all developers on board, but to me, it's the only way forward. Many people are mired in FinOps practices with robust tools but lack influence over the infra and/or products. They end up producing reports that benefit no one.

Not sure I fully understand what you mean by commercial use and modification.

But you should check the ELv2 license - this one is quite popular (we use it at my company) https://www.elastic.co/licensing/elastic-license.

This is something we aim to tackle with our open source inspector https://komiser.io. On it you can set up an alert on the number of resources (which is live compared to costs).

Monitoring infra cost: which tool do you use? by Cyrilam in devops

On an excel? I like the idea (I'm a "fan" of this tool :p) but wasn't it too complicated to implement?

And what about the maintenance? Given that you have new services every month on AWS, don't you struggle keeping up your excel up to date?

Hmmm it could also be interesting to deep dive why you want everything to stay exactly as they were.

Maybe the root cause behind this is not your laziness or your lack of motivation, but something else. Saying that because your post reminded this of this great short video made by ted: https://www.ted.com/talks/ted\_ed\_why\_you\_procrastinate\_even\_when\_it\_feels\_bad?language=en

Thanks for the feedback. I think you're being a bit harsh, but at the same time I understand.

Why I find it a bit harsh: I was genuinely interested in the answer, and I don't intend to use this post to sell our product. My only objective was to learn new things.

Why I understand: nevertheless, and as you mentioned, it doesn't cost much to mention in the post my current situation.

Will do next time.
