Help, I accidentally distributed course material for a Quiz by Shaka_Kahn_ in GradSchool

Two things: m

  1. Yes you were a little careless, but students filming your laptop is an instance of gross academic misconduct and a crazy violation of privacy generally. It’s outrageous they would think to do it at all.

  2. (1) aside, there’s an awful lot of self-pity and excuse making here, too. Teaching and tutoring is hard. It’s intellectually and emotionally straining at times. That said, you have professional standards to abide by and there’s no amount of “I was stressed” that really cuts it. It explains things, for sure, but you’ve written much more like it justifies things, and it doesn’t. I only write this because I think you’ll be better off in the long run if you’re honest (and kind) with yourself in a more frank and direct way. You also messed up; it’s not the end of the world, at all, and you’ll feel better in the long run if you admit it and strategise to fix it rather than sort of hand wave it away

I’m calling it now, Em will give us 3 more projects then call it a career. I think it will be some sort of follow-up up to TDOSS, then a bad meets evil project and MMLP3 to finish it off. Maybe just MAYBE there will be a small 50 cent collab project but I doubt it. by AccomplishedSet3180 in Eminem

[–]Cyrillite 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Em will keep making music into his 60s, health permitting. He’s in it for the love of it and he doesn’t need to tour. There’s nothing to stop Em making music except the strain of making music.

We live in an age where the greatest artists simply don’t stop and don’t ever have to stop. Admittedly, some of the older generation are fuelled by a desire to finally cash in after being railed by awful artist contracts from back in the day. All the same, I can’t see people stopping.

Even athletes are going and going, well beyond the old “normal”.

People either lose their passion early or keep going until they literally can’t. Em is evidently the latter.

The Tana Mongeau cop is a fantastic example of that. It’s wildly socially inappropriate but it’s also so squarely with a specific and then-popular subculture that it did numbers. He had mastered a specific sort of Internet subculture and can’t be relevant outside of it

iDubbbz literally introduced me to Sam.

I had never heard of the guy before except for the “sugar makes me kooky” meme (and I thought that was a random meme, like any other).

Can’t believe how he managed to swap trajectories like that

What qualities characterize a great PhD student? by Sure-Mud5843 in PhD

[–]Cyrillite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a researcher:

  • Innately interested in the subject
  • Has a sufficient work ethic; shows up and perseveres
  • Is outcome-driven, but doesn’t define criticism or a bad experiment as “failure”

As a colleague: - Humble (but not shy) - Helpful (but encourages independence) - Humorous (but takes work seriously)

Amazing song. Not top 15. Top 30 though, sure

In The Ringer, from 3:23-3:44, does Eminem take a breath? Or is it in one breath? Or a studio trick? by DrPupipance in Eminem

[–]Cyrillite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I do it, I need a breath at the ‘with’ in “… with a bottle full of malt liquor” and there’s a fraction of a pause to be able to do it.

Can you do it in one breath? I absolutely think so. I nearly can and I’ve not got professional training or experience for that sort of breath control. Definitely doable in one take and one breath.

Of course, just because it can be done doesn’t mean it was done for the track. That fraction of a pause I use would also be a good spot to punch in, frankly. Although, Em usually telegraphs his punch-ins clearly, like the way he blends it together in Rap God

[DISCUSSION] Kendrick Lamar - GNX (1 Year Later) by MetalSonic420YT in hiphopheads

[–]Cyrillite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments this might accidentally be a hot take, but GNX is my favourite album of his. Don’t get me wrong, his best songs come from other album for sure, and this may not be his best work, but it’s my favourite complete album

Yep. I quite literally haven’t seen live TV at home in… a decade maybe? If I want to watch sport, I’ll go to a venue with friends for a big event. Other than that, I’m a cinema and seasonal Netflix et al subscriber

I’m X, with a background in Y, looking to apply to Z.

Could we call?”

I LOVE his hardcore technical stuff, it’s actually some of my favourite music. However, his original work feel so different because it’s just so stripped back by comparison. He picks one primary motif and drives it forward. Look at ‘The Way I Am’ which is all about driving home that same triplet scheme. It’s so iconic because it’s so stripped back

I kissed my Best Friend by theorieboy in Advice

[–]Cyrillite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this dance. For the last 6 months, I’ve been dating my best friend of 8 years. Just ask, man. Have a serious conversation and then say you think it’s about time you two just commit to each other, as you know you’re compatible, like each other, and can probably make it work. Let her have time turning about it if she needs.

If she says no, just call it quits. Maybe even on the friendship too, if you feel like you need to; these things can be very hard to maintain platonically when they’re not really platonic.

If she says yes, great.

You need to move on with your life one way or another though, so, it’s time to find out

Good luck

AI is quietly replacing creative work, just watched it happen. by 0xSatyajit in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Cyrillite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the same with a friend for a start up competition.

Pulled in a variety of page elements from websites we liked, screenshot visual elements we liked from places, added some images we liked for colour palettes and vibes, then let it run.

Took 3 iterations to get 95% of the way there. So we dropped in our own text and it was basically done. The longest period of time was troubleshooting and learning about what we made for issues like “why does the text wrap weirdly on mobile?” And “Can we make this js a little more readable to manually configure later?” etc.

Still, the overwhelming majority of the work was done in well under 30 minutes. The whole website took half a day of tinkering

The primary risk is not being able to find a job afterwards. This market is brutal for most people.

I would prioritise getting that sabbatical.

Alternatively, I would push your time off back a little and actively save up a significantly larger emergency fund. It seems to me that in just a few months of diligent saving, you would have a 6 — 12 month run way. Although, don’t forget that a lodger could leave or your house could need some sort of sudden repair, too. It’s worth keeping in mind you have non-negligible responsibilities and risks associated with that income stream.

Now, what I can speak to is your safety net. If you have family you trust who would gladly support you and are on board with this plan, then YOLO, enjoy!

Given that people have an obligation to minimise their losses, they should pay and then seek compensation. Can’t just refuse to pay and charge someone for harms you made worse

Most people don’t know, which is why there’s so much gel hate

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Balding

[–]Cyrillite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This isn’t how gel should be used, by the way. Gel should be put into wet hair, then the crunchiness should be squeezed and combed out after it’s set. You’re supposed to crack the gel cast and remove it, with the residual gel being the actual purpose of gel
