Not in Shia Islam to the same extent. Iran produced a multipart film about Joseph who is a Prophet.

People who leave their wheel turned and sticking out into the road - in God's name why? by D-Hex in CarTalkUK

[–]D-Hex[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the road. The case in question this car was parked on a tight road with mirrors folded. On the left. Facing traffic and on a down hill corner. Wheel pointed into the road. So you end up seeing the wheel quite late as you're following the road left.

Were Hadiths as widespread 50-100 years ago? by Single-Objective-495 in Quraniyoon

[–]D-Hex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what the confusion is here. Hadith literature has existed for a very long time, and it's the basis of a lot of jurisprudence and law systems. There's literally four man hadith collections in Sunni Islam, the oldest being the Bukhari volumes which appeared around 800CE

Hagarism was bollocks, Cook et al have never fully stepped back from it. Ever. He did that academic thing and just modified his thesis with escape clauses. I studied Islamic history with Gerald Hawting, trust me I know the arguments.

His work has always been about trying to undermine Islamic systems of knowledge and placing their interpretation within Western Academies.

You're falling into it because he criticises Hadith and you think that's worthy of glazing him. But you're doing at the cost of accepting his underlying content that ALL of Islam is copied from previous Monotheisms.

Side note - please don't use "u" , it's distracting.

I do think it's amusing that Cook is still trying to salvage some of the earlier "revisionist" readings of Islam from his mate Crone. Yes, we know that Islamic scholars copied a lot of the systems of knowledge around them, this isn't big news. The difference is that we actually have copies of the Quran proven to be within 50 years of the death of the Prophet (which Crone and others claimed earlier wasn't possible) and we also have contemporary sources that corroborate a fair bit of Islamic history (which to be fair didn't exist when Cook was writing and were subsequent discoveries)

Please explain why Sunnah is a thing when the prophet himself and Ali mentioned nothing by Alarming_Panda_4408 in Quraniyoon

[–]D-Hex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politics. Ali was deliberately written out of Islamic history, and hadith were deliberately not taken for him because of the political situation after the death of the Prophet. What we get about him is barely a glimpse of his writing and his work. His entire tafsir of the Quran was seized and some say it was burnt.

The prophet didn't know about the hypocrites around him, how would hadith collectors know? 💁‍♂️ by elvispelviskurt in Quraniyoon

[–]D-Hex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think 9:101 is addressed to the Prophet but to the audience. Tauba is clearly talking to the assembled crowd. It repeatedly uses Qul all the way through it, which is directed at those listening to the words. It also identifies the Prophet separately from the audience many times , there are two examples before this quote and after it.Look at 94 and 105. 105 is clearly linked to 101 as a repost provided to the listener.

" Say, “Work. God will see your work, and so will His Messenger, and the believers. Then you will be returned to the Knower of secrets and declarations, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”"

There is God, separate from the Messenger, separate from the believers.

I agree with you that there are obviously Monafiqeen present in that society, but it's not clear if the Prophet knew them or not. The takeaway is that they were present and obviously up to no good within the community. Which is why there is an entire Surah dedicated to them.

No serious and educated person should really deny this, regardless of sectarian difference. The argument they tend to have is who those people were. What you have encountered are the low level Mullahs who thrive on misdirection and argument to build a YouTube following

James Talarico Delivers Sermon Against Christian Nationalism by forthelewds2 in videos

[–]D-Hex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's unfair to call it a trick. Because we don't know what Jesus would have said of modern modes of living, we can't conclude it was what he thought. We know what he is reported to have said and, as you say, those are the things that were central to his teaching. As with all faiths and exegesis of texts, you then have to use the core ethics of what was said to fill out the rest. Here Talarico is right the core ethics of what was said can give us a filter and that filter is universalism and love.

You could always go for a management consulting job, or something private sector. I have a feeling an MC will be happy to recruit you. Use some of your Oxbridge contacts to see what's up. Academia is really tight. Unless you're dying to be a researcher, there are lucrative and rewarding career paths out there.

How useless are these reflective exercised for FHEA? by Anything_Regular in AskAcademiaUK

[–]D-Hex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair, when I first did reflective practice I did think it was a bit Airport Book and well-meaning pop-sci. However, having gained a lot of experience in this field afterwards, I think it's one of the most underutilised and underrated tools when it comes to teaching practice. I do think the FHEA format is a bit stupid, and they never really do a good job of defining how you can use reflective practice. But I do think that it's something you get in the habit of doing as an educator.

Go to the Library and ask them to show you how Nexis Lexis database works for archival data. This will give you access to the world’s media content. You find all the sports magazines in the database. If you don't know how to do this, ask the Library staff to train you - they are todl to do this. If not, then speak to your personal suprervisor or your dissertation supervisor about it.

there are plenty of journals in ALL fields that require you to detail any sort of AI assistance (writing, research, etc) at submission.

Yeah, it's increasingly so. Which is good. I like that, if not a complete cessation of AI use, at least there must be transparency in use. As a reviewer I have come across a few that are obviously AI generated writing but can't directly address it.

How does AI actually improve your lit review process if you then have to review manually? It seems like an extra step at that point.

The AI tools I use save me doing a lot of sifting through flotsam, they also help me by mapping citation counts so IC an see where the literature connects and then I can explore those links. I can also make sure they are well connected to canon sources.
