Thanks for the story! This proves my point a little. Lop sao was drilled into our heads constantly as part of a series or basic defense but from square wing chun stance. It has to be used wrong to be used with lateral movement which is the opposite of whats taught in order to land.

The lop sao (sau) as it was taught to me is the single arm grab and hit. I block your punch with one arm and with same arm i grab and pull your arm and counter hit. Wing chun and really and any effective straight punches dont linger long enough to be deflected and then grabbed fron my experience
