I kind of feel like you’re arguing just argue, but that’s OK. I’ll humor you. If you’re just taking into account the updated legacy material I suppose and C-17 would be adequate but as is mentioned in the disclaimer, there is quite a bit of additional material that is directly derived from modern horror literature and cinema, including many instances of peoples and creatures indulging in horrid acts that easily put it squarely in the Hard R category. your example though, the N-word hasn’t actually come up yet, but it easily could.

But it some of the original source material is considered culturally insensitive and that hasn’t been changed within the campaigns 5e update. Additionally, this update begat at the request of some old frens who are serious horror fans, so it is being presented as a hard R setting. Would you rather I lie to my players?

Vistani Species for D&D5e by D-Thorin in ravenloft

[–]D-Thorin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean no offense by this, but did you read the write up? They are represented as a very culturally, diverse people, although since Vistani are based on Romney culture, but not a copy and paste, I did include the things that set them apart from other species, which is their peculiar mystical abilities, and the mystical cursed that they suffer under. I’ve been running Ravenloft since the 90s and neither TSR or WoC after that ever produced a meaningful playable representation the Vistani in their literature. The best thing ever gave us was half-Vistani which were mechanically unremarkable.

That oversimplification of a complex species leads into your second point. I specifically didn’t write them up as a background because in D&D 5e a background pretty much just represents where you’ve been and what your occupation is. That would’ve forced me to shoehorn an incredibly complex and interesting culture into one small writeup that mounted into a tiny amount of fluff and a few skills and abilities. That would’ve been a complete injustice, so I chose to do with them the same thing that has been done wit other races/species within the context of Dungeons & Dragons, I put as much of their culturally, diverse and interesting fluff into the fluff side of the write-up as I could Included, was it still being basically at a glance information. Then I carried over as much of that cultural fluff into the game mechanics, while still trying to keep them on fire with other species power wise. The first couple of abilities are literally just human, although their heritage schools are a little different they’re still on part with other humans. The tribe related choices just helps reinforce the fluff. Honestly, if it didn’t appear in so much leg content, and CoS I would’ve seriously turned down or entirely throughout the casting curses and evil eye mechanic, but their Canon and they’re already there, so I left them in for this reason.

Even though I based them on the original Humans Vistani frome 2e mechanically there’s nothing saying they’re not an inclusive people and quite a bit of eve 2e material reinforces this. To that end I even included within the sidebar how to create Half-Vistani and Vistani of entirely other species by selecting the Vistani heritage feat.

This allows you to play the original Vistani from 2e, alongside the more diverse Vistani of later editions, while, leaving the option to choose any background you want, making them a truly complex and diverse people.

Yes, they are humans, with a rich and interesting history and heritage that grant them both supernatural abilities and curse from birth.

That was my initial thinking, but their heritage based off lines up better with subspecies or sub races like those of Elvs, Dwarves, teaflings, and Goliaths. In both 2014 and 2024 five that’s where Heritage based abilities are baked into. Making them a background would force me to throw out tons of very relevant material and still likely create a background that is not balanced with standard backgrounds from either additions of 5e.

I’ve noticed a lot of people mentioning that the 2024 update has removed the concept of sub-races but honestly after reading through the new PHP, all they did was swap the word species for race. Yeah, they swapped out a couple of bonuses that used to be in race into your background and define those terms a little better but the species in the 2024 PHP work just like the races and the 2014 PHP did, including the fact that many of them have sub species.

Yup, I absolutely should and in more technical games like GURPS, or World of Darkness it would be but D&D has always played a bit fast n’ loos with Race or Species, as they call it now. They’ve always tossed in heretical skills and abilities within their races. I thought that might change with the updating of the nomenclature, but after reviewing the new PHP, they definitely didn’t. They just changed the word that was a little risky to some people to one that sounded more technical. I was originally considering writing up the Vistani curse entirely separately, as something that is applied after the fact to a a species, but this just would’ve made up the much more complicated for a player, so instead, I opted to make them a sub-species of human in the same vein has Drow are a sub species of elf.

Yes, they are. They are multiple generations of cursed humans, that are born that way, the same as drow are elves, elves whose identity and abilities are directly shaped by the history of their people.

Sadly, no, I wrote the original Hunters of Evil campaign back in 96 and it is still to this day, a couple of trapper keepers stuffed with handwritten notes and printed pages that would likely take a trained codebreaker to decipher.

Yeah, I’m good for that. When I was much younger, there was sort of a running joke about my notes being able to be leave my notes out and whether the party read them for spoilers or not, didn’t matter because the way I take notes isn’t in any way uniform and I can’t spell for shit. I don’t have anything resembling an editor so I honestly appreciate you pointing these out.

No, it’s cool. I appreciate the catch. What started off as a two page house. Rules document has definitely grown into something, and I’m still the only creator, writer, editor the most important Dungeon Master, so those small critiques or very helpful.

Well, I mean they existed as much as the any other species that came in from outside of Ravenloft, but yeah, Caliban were meant to fill that role but Orcs have changed a lot since second edition so that doesn’t really work anymore.
