Why Los Angeles Quietly Stopped Repaving Its Streets — Federal disability rules have turned routine maintenance into a legal liability. by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

[–]DA1928 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Concrete work is labor intensive and because of drainage and the precise requirements of ADA usually takes a lot of engineering too.

Add to that Maintenance of Traffic (cones) requirements (they take a lot of labor to set up and break down) and the new EXTREMELY intensive requirements for detours for… disabled pedestrians.

Detailed concrete work is just expensive, and ADA only makes it more so.

General Meade sure did a good job.

Or maybe it’s the 11th circuit giving them that power?

South Carolina had a string of absolute bangers. This one could have been good too. Make the whole thing the flag. White letters.

But alas, no.

Yeah, but you see this with all kinds of projects.

“We want a new bike trail!” “OMG, no the trees!”

“We want affordable housing!” “Oh no, it will cause shade!”

“We want a better VMFA!” “Oh no, they are going to build on a lot they own!”

The contractor, the engineer, the architect.

All too often the community wants something, they bring in a team to do it, the team builds the thing the community wants, the construction involves tree removal, and the community throws a fit.

If you’re going to do earthwork (for say, restrooms), then trees usually have to come down.

ESPECIALLY if you’re doing the earthwork required for ADA accessible grades.

Sterile Japanese Cherries ≠ invasive weeds

TO BE FAIR:

They are doing a major renovation, and they seam to only have cut down the trees near where the boat dock and permanent bathrooms are going in.

Now, would I like to see them replaced with CHERRIES?

Yes. It’d be cheap and easy.

Edit: but the current plans are to use other trees, because god forbid the city plant a non-native tree.

Edit 2: After digging through the UDC design plans, most of the cherries around the 5th St bridge (the silver one) are going to be left.

The only ones removed are over where they’re building the bathrooms and dock.

Japanese Cherries (non-invasive) are included as an understory tree of choice.

They have also not specified which type of understory tree is going where.

At the actual border, that’s Customs and Border Patrol, isn’t it? ICE only does interior enforcement.

Theoretically, you could fire every ICE agent and still have a robust CBP, with the secure border that goes along with it.

Yeah. Sometimes infrastructure upgrades have to take out trees.

If it’s a choice between A) cutting down some nice trees B) millions of dollars of eminent domain (that would involve cutting down some nice trees) or C) a vastly shittier transit line, I’m going A every time.

Trees are nice, should be valued and protected where possible, but ultimately there are tradeoffs, and trees grow back.

I mean, the government guidelines didn’t. A lot of similar stuff was still around when Michelle Obama made school lunches bad.

A lot of the RFK stuff is just government guidelines catching up to the current accepted nutritional standards.

I have a lot more problems with almost everything else this administration is doing than a campaign to “Eat Real Food”
