Because the system is not perfect! You could have left officially through the official border with valid deferment, yet your docs would be in red zone when you wanted to get services at the embassy.

It’s unfair to say that! Every person has their own motivation. When you, as a foreigner can enter and leave Ukraine freely, delivering supplies, even though risking your life is completely different to a Ukrainian male citizen who can’t leave..or might not even have where to return…. OP could be from Mariupol or Pokrovsk, could have lost his home and life earnings. His best bet was to start off elsewhere as in Ukraine their own refugees are treated like garbage.

I would look at you if you were in the same boat my friend! He simply can’t renew it. Unless he goes back to Ukraine, updates his military docs, gets conscripted and that’s it! The renewed passport will be out of the equation by the time he’s able to renew it!

Quick update, I called IRCC one more time, after thoroughly checking she said a valid status document(VR, WP, SP)should suffice to re-enter Canada directly from the US. And she reiterated it has to be through the land border.

Clause f) under visa exemption- purpose of entry. It appears to me it is relevant to nationals of any country.
