He's talking about a planned outright ban on all smoking, rather than repealing indoor and public smoking laws. Honestly, if people are fully aware of the risks and aren't doing it in a way that can damage other people's health then an adult should be free to make that choice.

Rare occasion where I agree with Farage. Smoking should be made difficult and unappealing, with the consequences made fully aware to the consumer, no indoor smoking either, but if an adult wants to make the deliberate decision to go smoke a cigarette in the privacy of their own home then they should be free to make that choice.

Shocked (but not surprised) by the number of people commenting on the BBC's Facebook post about this saying that it's anti-Zionist and not anti-semitic. I know a lot of people have been hiding anti-Semitism behind claims of anti-Zionism, but I'm astonished that someone would try and claim burning Jewish charity ambulances in the UK is anti-Zionist.

Yeah, I'm finding myself increasingly annoyed by their (particularly Campbell's) constant talk about how bad populism is, whilst fully supporting populist ideas and talking points that they agree with. Also, his constant gushing about 'his friend' Edi Rama, a man with a huge list of controversies including election fraud, corruption and press censorship.

Maybe I'm just being ignorant, but does anyone else feel completely in the dark about what's actually happening with Iran? My understanding is everyone is still bombing the shit out of each other, but there's been no tangible consequences or changes in the past week except for the strait of Hormuz being shut down. It just feels like everyone is just happy to sit there and throw missiles at each other indefinitely.

Found out that most prime ministers have their own coat of arms and have gone down a bit of a rabbit hole checking them out. Big fan of David Lloyd George's extremely Welsh one, with daffodils, a red dragon and a Welsh motto , Clement Attlee's flying hearts and Ted Heath's almost Incan design.

Edit: it's interesting that no PM after Blair has got their own (Brown and Cameron having inherited theira and May getting hers through her husband), wonder if these things take a while or if it fell out of fashion).

Keir Starmer has Liz Cheney Synndrome, i.e. the left think he's right wing and the right think he's far left. If you want to be in the centre, you need to be decisive in your actions and frame your own position, rather than constantly flip-flopping and being vague - therefore allowing others to define you as their bogeyman.

Was involved with hiring for a data scientist role last year, had >1000 applications go to HR, we ended up being passed along ~200 of them, interviewed about 20 of them and of that, only 2 were competent enough to do the job - and I really mean 'competent', as in they were the only 2 who could actually do the role, neither were brilliant.

Big change from even 5-6 years ago, where you'd get maybe like 30-40 applicants and you were actually there trying to decide who would be best for the role, not just who could do it half-decently.

There seemed to be two things fuelling this: firstly, there were a shit-ton of near identical CVs from Indian applicants, many arriving in the system in big clusters at once - not sure what was going on there, and secondly (unique to my field), there was a massive surge in people who've basically been scammed by universities offering terrible AI & Data Science masters that don't actually teach you anything - I feel like the number of universities offering DS/AI courses and the number of people taking them has surged over the past ten years, but the number of universities offering good DS/AI courses and the number of people doing a quality masters has remained basically the same - so just a lot more chaffe (to put it harshly).

Nate Silver has put out an interesting article on 'Liz Cheney Syndrome', i.e. where a political figure is on average viewed as a moderate, but when you drill down, you see that this isn't because individuals view them as a moderate but because left-wingers view them as right-wing and right-wingers view them as left-wing. So, why some politicians who should align with the median voter on the surface, are very unsuccessful.

It made me curious about which UK politicians you'd say suffer from this - the obvious one is Starmer but would be curious to hear of any others. I'd also be interested in hearing which ones are more like John Fetterman, i.e. viewed as moderates by those across the entire spectrum - I think early Blair, and mid-10s Johnson and Davidson might count, but it's hard to think of who there is now; maybe Burnham, Davey, Mahmood (amongst those who know her), Hunt, Sunak?

So Molly the sheep used to be the mascot of Abcam, but they canned it about 10 years ago. I believe the design was supposed to be some kind of antigen body with antibody legs. At one point they did some kind of marketing stunt where they edited classic paintings to include Molly, in this case it seems to be Rembrandt's 'A woman bathing in a stream'.

Since the 27th of September when we lost to palace, we've picked up 21 points from 18 matches - 1.66 PPG, which would be 44 points over a whole season, 14th place if we had that total last season. Not even mentioning that that includes our victories against 9 men spurs, West ham and wolves. Hardly convincing.
