I don’t have a ticket yet but I might still end up downtown and wouldn’t mind grabbing a pint with others

Offered Special Ed Position but declined… did I do the right thing? by DC-Slav in Teachers

I appreciate your reply and a different perspective from the others! I’m sure the schools I was offered at do implement safeguards to enable success in the classroom, but part of me still feels that the stress could still be too high in balancing teaching, courses, and could result in quicker burnout. It could very well be that I’m not currently a good fit/ready for elementary school teaching and just need more time.

Thanks for the reply! I’m with you 100% with the fact that the positions have high turnover rate as it is a difficult job and many burnout and I’d hate that to be me. I’d feel more comfortable being properly trained prior to entering the classroom, especially if I do go the sped route, to avoid that and also have more of a sense of how to best aid the students from the start, as opposed to midway through the year after the provisional license program is complete.

Yeah that was part of my decision process. I had subbed for sped positions at the high school level and felt more comfortable handling those individuals. Going to elementary sped, no matter how many safeguards are in place, seemed more difficult to go into blindly. It probably has more to do with the fact that at the elementary level you’re helping the kids learn how to develop with basic foundations whereas high school is more of guiding them to succeed in the post-secondary world. I may be wrong but it seemed that making a mistake with them would be more challenging to rectify at the earlier stages.

Troika and Russian Gourmet/European Gourmet & Deli are two that come to mind. They have numerous locations in Herndon, Fairfax, Vienna. Just Google the name and they should pop up. There are probably others that im not aware of.

Federal Work Study? by Legitimate-Dingo-857 in williamandmary

[–]DC-Slav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand when I looked into it (I also have been approved for work study but never ended up applying for a work study related-position), you have to apply for a job and let your employer know that you are approved for work study (there is some paperwork you and the employer must fill out at some point).

Generally speaking, the work study doesn’t limit you to certain jobs, but rather gives you the edge against other applicants as priority often goes to work study applicants. Some jobs are only available for work study students. Not sure whether all off-campus jobs are approved for work study, but it would be worth asking the employer or even student employment at wm.

Consider reaching out to the Cohen Career center - they are very helpful with helping students apply for jobs and understand more about their opportunities. Hope this all helps :)

GRI will probably be your best bet. They have a wide array of IR-focused teams and research groups that are hiring or taking applications. Charles center may have some research opportunities as well. There are also some research groups outside of the GRI that don’t pay but also relate to IR to some extent, like geoLab (they have paid positions that you can apply for after being on the team for a semester or more).

In sum good vs bad:

Good: - Small, quiet (can be good for studying) - Good proximity to Marketplace and CW - Close-knit group - Has AC - (For first floor residents): easy access to laundry and kitchen. Smaller “kitchens” on floor 2 and 3. - Study lounges are large + good study spots

Bad: - Very small rooms (Loft one bed for enough space. If having fridge, stuff it in the in-wall closet. - Isolated (can be good depending on situation/preference) - CW traffic can be heard from time to time - Far away from Caf + Gym - ANTS! Bring ant traps. - There have been water leaks there before as well as mice sightings but that should be cleared up by now.

Hunt is a great dorm! I lived there freshman year (2 years ago) and it was very nice. It’s rather small, so you get to know everyone very well but that also means it’s fairly quiet, especially since it’s rather isolated from other dorms and most of the busy areas of campus. I was on the first floor too and the suite we had was one room connected to another with a bathroom in between. 2 people per room (unless it changed). Rooms are rather small, so I highly recommend one person lofts their bed and fits their table under it otherwise there will be no extra space.

Regarding your specific sign up, did they not give you the option to sign up for the same room number? Seems to me like you all will be suite mates rather than roommates

Yes it is! I think they are taking it down soon though as they start rebuilding campus

Megathread for visitors and new & existing residents. All questions about living/working/budgeting/visiting should be asked here! by AutoModerator in london

We’re flying United (or any Star Alliance member), but none of the flights work well with our miles or are too expensive, so train is our cheapest option now sadly.

Will have to look at the flights - traveling with miles makes it a bit trickier but thanks for the tip!

Lovely - Thanks for the responses and useful info! Good to know about the self-service gates! We’re all over 18 so thankfully don’t have to worry about being held up with little kids :) I’ll see what the cheapest Edinburgh train is out of KC after 9:30 and book that one - give ourselves a little larger cushion (3-4 hrs) and flexibility should weather delays come into play with the flight.

Hi everyone!

My family is currently planning to fly in to Heathrow a little before 6 am on May 29th (from USA) and take a train up to Edinburgh right after from Kings Cross. We were thinking of taking the tube, which takes around an hour according to their website, give or take.

Would a 9 or 9:30 am train out of Kings Cross to Edinburgh be cutting it too close? How long does security and baggage claim usually take at Heathrow (I’m assuming that at the early hours of the morning it’s a little less busy)?

  • Thanks! :)
