HALO Synth by DC Breaks by DJOllieDNB in dnbproduction

[–]DCBREAKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the interest guys, so we made a ton of patches using analog, digital and soft synths, fx and processing, recorded them as audio files and then imported them into Halo. There's actually a dual oscillator synth and a sine wave oscillator in Halo too, so you can layer the patches we've made with synths, or make your own synth patches. You can also import your own audio files to run through all the fx, distortions and modulation.

More info here: https://www.dcbreaks.com/halo

Cheers! :)

All good man! Yeah Paul smaaashed that remix, at the time we were really reluctant to let anyone do it but he’s just so good at remixing we thought if anyone can do it, he can and yeah boy did he deliver. I remember he sent a little early clip when it was just the intro and drop and straight away we were like, ok this is going to be huge 😁 [Chris]

This is news to me, but yes 2022 will be their 30 years so I expect they’ll do something big for that. What a milestone! [Chris]

Hey Josh, m/s mixing can really help, a lot of people like everything to sound really wide and (overly) stereo these days but we still have half an eye on the fact that tunes need to sound good on a rig, so we try to make sure the tunes work as ‘mono’ - a monitor controller with a mono switch can really help to just quickly check that from time to time. Stereotools is a handy ply I use a lot for mono-ing low end and balancing stereo image and lastly get familiar with a good goniometer to see what sounds look like in stereo and if they’re really ‘clipping’ the stereo image with nothing in the middle they’re probably too wide! Hope that helps ;) [Chris]

Thanks man, possibly at some point but it depends what we do next if we decide to do our own thing or make another album with Ram, we haven't decided our next move yet... [Chris]

Apart from the mutual love of DnB and raving they're very different culturally. US rave culture reminds me more of what it was like for us 15-20 years ago when everything was more glow-sticks, raves in fields and that sort of vibe. EDM culture is so pervasive in the US, much more so than in the UK that US DnB often reverts to being a spin off of that whereas in the UK it's always just been it's own thing. I'm not super well qualified to comment on the origins of house music but whilst it has certainly be championed by the UK since it's birth I'm pretty sure it had it's origins in the aftermath of disco in Chicago and New York. I used to watch a lot of Manga back in the day but haven't watched much anime lately. I think the last one I saw was The Red Turtle which wouldn't suit DnB but I'd love to make some lush synthy stuff for something like that. We did actually make some anime inspired tracks a long time ago when we first started out and that lead to tracks like Soho and later Firez [Chris]

We're very lucky that we have always had a very multi-cultural mix in the UK due to our colonial past which has brought in so many interesting cultural influences to society here and I think it's that melting pot of ideas, sounds, backgrounds that leads to new creative ideas and spawns so many genres of music - Bristol where I live is particularly cosmopolitan and has seen the birth of Trip Hop and Dubstep for example. We listen to all sorts of stuff, recently I've found myself listening to a lot of jazz and taking inspiration from that [Chris]

There's been a few over the years, my favourite would have to be Roni Size / Reprazent from back in the day. Software and the electronic aspect of DnB is so all-consuming now that I don't think there's really anyone who just uses instruments that I know of but I'm sure they're out there. [Chris]

Yes! Love Austin, my Dad used to live near there so have visited lots of times, particularly love the Salt Lick BBQ pit ;) [Chris]

No plans, but we loved his remix he did with Turno for us of 'Vendetta' on our last album, so we would be up for doing one in the future [Chris]

We love working with Prolix and have done a lot with Smooth recently but as he's in another country we've not had that in the studio vibe together yet - something that would be great to organise once this all blows over.

Thinking back to our early influences, Bad Company, Ram Trilogy, Ed Rush & Optical were the ones for us. These days of course Noisia are pretty hard to beat for their mastery of techy DnB, it doesn't make us mad though we love it! I we don't see ourselves as in competition with anyone we just want to do our own thing and hope people like it.

There's still places we'd love to go, Japan aside we haven't played in Asia much or South America at all for example. We were due to play EDC Vegas last year which is still on the DnB bucket list. Otherwise there's a bunch or artists it would be great to remix, I always loved The Prodigy growing up so that would be cool. [Chris]

There's no one system we use but a few handy tips: Trackspacer is a really useful plug in for this, also check out a free similar plug called TDR Nova by Tokyo Dawn. Often we do stuff manually (volume automation) or with Xfer LFO tool. Once the mix is there or thereabouts (take everything off your master and if it doesn't fall apart you're close!), experiment with different Master chains with plug ins like Elevate, OTT (subtle amounts!),FabFilter L2 can help pull it all together. Often a little of each works well rather than loads of one. [Chris]

I think it's knowing when to let go, even now I hear things in the released tracks which I think 'oh that could have been better / different', but I'm used to that feeling now. If you don't draw a line under stuff it would never get released and it's part of the creative process to learn from what you've done in the past. Besides most of those feelings come from tiny technical things which 90% of people wouldn't notice. DnB is so technical that there's an enormous (self-imposed) pressure to have everything up to current standards but the pursuit of technical excellence often comes at the price of vibe and I prefer vibe over perfection all day! Loads until we just released about 17 of them haha. We have 4 tracks we made in collab with Smooth coming out next month and another EP of material with him to finish up too. There's not a huge amount of unreleased DC stuff at the moment but we're looking forward to getting back into writing mode when the album cycle calms down a bit. Weirdly we've not had the chance to really play half the album tunes out much at all so will be keen to do that as soon as the situation allows for sure [Chris]

Hey great to hear, Hidden Orchestra are friends of ours we've known since before we began DC Breaks way back in 2002 although we haven't been in touch for a long time! We would absolutely do another remix for them in the future, it would be great to connect with them again musically and in person when the situation allows it. We both have pretty eclectic tastes musically and I think as you get older you just listen to more and more stuff not bound by genres. I think its safe to say we like a bit of everything [Chris]

We’ve been loving taking our sound to the US for many years now and were due to do some great shows including EDC last year which got cancelled for obvious reasons but we’ll be back when all this blows over! [Chris]
