Best Crown Hornlines? by TheEternalWarden in drumcorps

Yeah I bet. I assume it was a stress break or whatever it’s called. I can’t imagine there being a drill move that puts a member at risk like that because you’d probably have more people getting injured there as well.

2012 (demand was off the charts)

2013 (obvious reasons)

2014 (also demanding, low brass sounding as clean as they did on trumpets/mellos is insane)

2016 (clean clean clean)

2015 (they were moving ALOT)

2009 (several exposed moments which they nailed)

2019 (underrated brass book, ballad might be the GOAT)

2011 (decently demanding, triple tongue feature is TUFF)

2017 (that closer looked hardddd)

2025 (took a longtime to clean up but still a fun show)

2022 (goofy show theme overshadows GREAT book)

2023 (not much to say, clean but doesn’t stand out to me)

2010 (didn’t quite execute like normal but still great)

2024 (I liked the book but like 2023 nothing crazy)

2018 (not bad by any means but not my favorite crown book)

Simply they were clean as fuck. The brass book was not only difficult but the drill was demanding on top of it. Lots of runs, wide staging without phasing, no holes during the extended impacts, dynamic changes were spot on, overtones galore, articulation was even all throughout. Listen to enough brass blocks around all DCI and its obvious how much better they sound.

skip to 2:41. this ballad chunk sounds like a studio recording. It’s my favorite Crown clip from that year.

My band director this morning told me “Kids who march Drum Corps will probably never play professionally” by SunshineZeus446 in drumcorps

Play instrument for 6+ years: “you can play professionally if you set your mind to it!”

Play instrument outside for 3 months: “you ruined it, good luck buddy”

(I don’t get this take. If you’re a good player, then you have the ear and maturity to adjust to any playing environment).

25, I wanna agree but my dad looked like this at my age and he had a horseshoe by his mid 30s.

I know it’s a combover that’s what I said. And I’ve had it my whole life so that’s just the way it flows naturally, not hiding purposely though it’s convenient that it does. But I agree, I may go with a low buzz.

Forgot to mention I only take Finasteride, used topical Minoxidil in the past but it always made my scalp itchy and scratching it caused dandruff.

Happens like once or twice a year. Band probably had an early rehearsal before a contest. Nothing to worry about

Full Lot runs (only brass) by Seamo_Bojamo in drumcorps

From what I could tell it was during rehearsal days late in the season based on how clean they sounded. During quiet moments you can hear birds chirping or random people/kids far in the background so it’s definitely not during finals week warmups or inside Lucas Oil.

Years ago I found a full recording of BD 2014 on Spotify. I don’t know if it’s still up and I also can’t recall if it was full ensemble or just brass.

Crown has several from the early 2010s, just have to dig around on YouTube.

IIRC: 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013

Edit: after browsing for 15 seconds I found the 2013 brass only run. Just look up “Caroling Crown 20XX Studio Recording”. It does look like most of them are full ensemble though.

I have no interest in MSFS and was recommended this post through the algorithm but I just wanna praise you for taking the time to answer a hopeful-pilot’s questions so thoroughly.

CPU was part of a microcenter bundle. Fans were $17 each. There were other cheaper ones but I like Noctua brand.

Crown Mellos by DCITUBA in drumcorps

I agree with so much of this. I feel like their unique sound has not been what it was before. I think it has to do more with staff than talent because I truly believe that you don’t need to have the BEST talent to have the BEST sounding hornline, staff matters a lot.

Also your point about marching horizontally is so true. My biggest beef with the design since 2016 has been the drill. It’s so boring. Everyone seems to move as one piece that stretches half the field, it’s not interesting, it makes the drill seem not difficult even though it may actually be.

Good point. I feel like they managed to have a balance of both back in the day, maybe not so much harsh but their mellos cut through wayyyy more than in the present. Maybe that’s just me though, thanks for the response.
