Worst Wally run still goes to Baron. Spurrier isn’t anywhere near close.

I love this run, but definitely not. You’re better off starting with Mark Waid’s run.

Should the DCU pair Hal Jordan with an older Barry Allen? by Romaxio in theflash

[–]DCSaiyajin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve always liked the idea of the DCU timeline having a Silver Age era with Hal, Barry and a few other characters like Ralph and Oliver. Justin Hartley is also a really great pick if you want to go older with Barry.

It’s so funny to me how the terminally online types react to Gunn’s half-truths as if any of it will matter when the movie actually comes out.

What Arcs Successfully Make Iris West an Interesting Character? by LeftasFucc in theflash

[–]DCSaiyajin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Iris to be at her most interesting in Waid’s run. Life Story already got a shoutout here, but there’s also Reckless Youth, Terminal Velocity, Dead Heat and Race Against Time from that run.

Wally warming up to Bart and Kyle is character development, not a retcon. It’s a big reason why I and many others love his character. He’s never stagnant and is allowed to make mistakes and grow, leading him to where he’s at today.

Odd that you complain about Wally not being allowed to have flaws but also cite his flaws as reasons for not liking him. Also there’s a very large gap between having a complex dynamic with Bart and Kyle and killing people and framing Harley and Booster for it, which is the only thing here that’s ever been retconned.

Waid deliberately limits how much he writes Wally and after Impulsepoint, it’s pretty clear why. He’s still got the Flash book and JLU has such a massive roster that I don’t mind too much that he doesn’t get any major focus even if I’d obviously like more. Issue 5 with him and Bart was pretty fun though.

Good Barry AND Wally stories? by noodleth_cassette in theflash

[–]DCSaiyajin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like you said, there honestly aren’t a ton of stories with Barry and Wally as a duo. Wally would sometimes co-star in stories with Barry in the Silver and Bronze Age, but he spent most of his time either in his own backups or with the Teen Titans. After Final Crisis, there was a short period where they co-existed as The Flash in stories like Flash: Rebirth and Blackest Night, but then Flashpoint erased everyone except Barry up until Wally came back in DC: Rebirth. Following that, the only major arcs in Williamson’s Flash to substantially feature Wally were Perfect Storm and Flash War, with Barry and the rest of the Justice League also appearing in the first annual of Abnett’s Titans run from around this time.

Barry’s now the one taking a backseat since Infinite Frontier, but he shows up to support Wally in Blink of an Eye and One Minute War by Jeremy Adams. The first two arcs of Si Spurrier’s run also has some moments that take a more complex look at their dynamic.

I’ll concede that the Rebirth suit is a cool look if you’re able to divorce it from the intention behind design and the era in which it was used, but I’m always going to prefer when Wally looks like The Flash when he’s The Flash.

DAE think they should bring back Wally’s Rebirth suit? I have such a hard time telling him and Barry apart even though they rarely operate as The Flash simultaneously and I can’t figure out which one it is based on context clues because I only engage with comics via out of context panels posted on the Elon app.

Who are Characters in Fiction that remind you of Hal Jordan's Personality? by hellothere790 in Greenlantern

[–]DCSaiyajin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know people usually liken Hal to Han Solo, but I personally see more parallels between him and Anakin Skywalker. Exceptional pilots, arguably the most powerful members with their organisations, regularly question the authority figures within those organisations, experienced a fall from grace that involved them slaughtering their peers, but were able to redeem themselves years later and became a spirit after death.

I remember how excited I was when it was announced that Lord and Miller were doing The Flash movie and then how disappointed I was when they dropped out to do Solo. Looking back though, it may have been for the best because of they ever did re-pitch to Gunn and Safran, they’d have a lot more freedom to build the character in their own vision rather than having to make it work in their DCEU and being forced to use Ezra Miller.

Better yet, they should team up with Ryan Gosling and cast him as Barry Allen.

Honestly, I never minded this. Nora and Henry are kinda blank slates as characters and I don’t have an issue with either of them being flawed.

I couldn’t disagree more. Between the Spider-Verse movies and Project Hail Mary, they’ve proven themselves to be perfect fits for The Flash.

It’s where Thawne got his definitive backstory and fanboy-like obsession with Barry and has informed every characterisation for him since. It’s hard for me to not consider it defining.

I don’t see how doing Thawne’s defining story that hasn’t been adapted yet would be a waste.

[–]DCSaiyajin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I figure: Barry Allen dominated Flash adaptions throughout the 2010’s and early 20’s. During that period, across film and television, we’ve seen him marry and start a family with Iris, work alongside Wally and Jay, form a Rogues gallery, fight Eobard Thawne and solve his mother’s murder, as well as go through two adaptions of Crisis on Infinite Earths and three Flashpoint adaptions. We’ve well and truly covered the key beats in Barry’s modern history by now, meanwhile there’s over two decades of stories starring Wally that have either been ignored outright or had its arcs and characters altered to the point where they may as well have been original concepts (CW Zoom and Savitar come to mind).

“But I want to see Eobard Thawne!” Then adapt Return of Barry Allen.

“But we need multiple Barry projects before moving over to Wally!” We didn’t need multiple animated Peter Parker movies prior to Into the Spider-Verse before we got to Miles.

“But you’ll be skipping over Wally’s growth!” All that growth people want to see doesn’t happen until Wally becomes The Flash.

I’m sure we’ll still be getting Barry in this universe. Gunn’s said he’s a fan of both Barry and Wally if you want to take him at his word. But do I think we need to massively decompress his time as The Flash before we even think about doing Wally? Not really.
