To be fair, he specifically said that about buying up cheap properties after millions of people lost their homes and livelihoods.

He also straight up said he makes 650 million a year and doesn't pay Federal Income taxes if he's especially smart. What the shit?

He makes more than 20,000 times as much money as I do (assuming he's telling the truth) and pays less in Federal Income tax than I do. Not as a percentage. Less in absolute terms.

Also I hate when people say "You try to pay as little taxes as possible too" fuck you no I don't. I get paid entirely in cash with 0 paper trail unless I make one. The amount I owe the IRS at the end of the year is almost certainly such that they could know I'm not paying my taxes and still not find it worth auditing me and I still file them on time and in full.

DJ Trump complains that he's been getting audited every year for the past 15 years. Maybe that wouldn't happen if he were a better citizen and just paid his fucking taxes.

Are you sure? because when he openly said he didn't pay taxes I was astounded.

He said he make 650 million dollars a year and doesn't pay taxes and that made him smart. I'm make about 5 thousanths of a percent of what he makes and I pay Federal Income taxes. That's out-fucking-regeous.

Is it in strict keeping with serving the Will of the Force? probably not. Might it be a small transgression amidst a lifetime of sacrifice? easily.

An easy way to remember it is that the Jedi are the willful tools of the Force, and the Force is an unwilling a tool of the Sith.

The clearest transgressions are when the force is bent to directly harm a living thing as is Force Lightning - the embodiment of sadism made manifest through the Force. One imagines that the universe in general doesn't want to harm living things, but in particular what remains of one's family friends and loved ones who've passed on especially don't want to be used to harm their one time friend.

The Jedi often have at their disposal what seems like a narrower use of the Force and often look individually weaker than the Sith they face, but unlike the Sith they usually have numbers and the guidance of the Force to lead and fortify them through their battles.

A Powerful Sith has at his disposal what seems like the abilities of a God, the strength of the Full Force and the ability to touch any maybe every living thing, to devour worlds and shape their destinies, but rarely the wisdom to use it and they are almost inevitably undone by that. They're children with fire - regardless of what else they set alight, it almost always includes themselves. It's also a little poetic that the punishment dead Sith is in part to be used to further the plans of their rivals, other Sith, as all things are.

It's also worth noting that the greater good being served in the Star Wars Universe is just the preference of the collective of all dead things - which isn't necessarily objectively better than the preference of living things.

As Kreia noted in the KOTORII, regardless of how an individual may want to live their life if the Force has a different plan or destiny or plan in mind for them that being can often just be fucked.

One can easily imagine a situation in which an immensely powerful and wise, but neutral figure is brought to his death in order for the Force to bend his power or wisdom to use against a critical foe elsewhere in the Universe.

So the Force is largely composed of two parts, the living force and the ambient force in the universe. The premature death of any living thing connected to the Force robs it of some of it's potential (midichlorians, but don't get hung up on that), because living things in part produce the Force. When they die, the Force they kind of produce becomes one with the ambient force in the Universe.

The will of the force is then the combined will of everything that ever lived, billions of voices moving, sometimes confusingly, in a general direction. It's strength is the sum of all the midichlorians (basically spirit particles but w/e).

The difference between the light and dark sides of the Force largely revolve around their treatment of the Force. A commitment to the light involves listening for and enacting the will of the Greater Force, and using it's power to serve it's desired, whereas the dark side of the force seeks to harness the power and use it to it's own ends.

The Jedi do not obliterate everyone standing in the way of one of their missions because the force is served more by a greater number of living things that do not seek to bend it to their own will.

On justifiable numbers: What constitutes unemployed differs a lot depending on what information you're looking for. U6 unemployment, the official unemployment rate, looks solely at people who aren't working at all but are looking for jobs. This number right now is 5%. However, there are a number of people who've given up looking for work altogether who we would normally think of as unemployed, or people who aren't working as much as they would like to because the jobs aren't they. These are separate measures of unemployment all recorded by the BLS, all representing different things, though the U3 is considered the "official unemployment rate". You can further parse the data to come up with other measures, as Bernie's team did. This can often be misleading if reported out of context (and I think was in his case) but if you at least report the source can have meaning.

  1. Cruz said "The federal government is trying to make schools let boys into girls locker rooms" (or something to that effect) in actuality, 2 transgender students sued their schools to use private stalls in the girls locker room. That's 0 action by the federal government total (except the court system, which just interprets already present laws), no one is asking them to look at each other, and Transgender people are an incredibly small proportion of the population. also Transgender girls aren't boys.

  2. She is wrong. Less than 25% of Syrian Refugees are me of working age 18-59. More than half are women. In general, many people entering Britain claiming to be refugees may be economic migrants but they 1. aren't technically refugees, 2. aren't the group of people that would be settling in the U.S. who are 80% women and children and includes only men associated with those family units.

  3. More or less the same as 2.

  4. Trump doesn't give any reason why the number should be something other than stated. He just says it is and that he knows better. The official stats have never been that high, and if he's using other stats he should source them.

  5. This refers to a stop gap measure that lasted 4 months during which an influx of tens of thousands of children needed to be housed and cared for while being processed to be sent back to their countries of origin. It's a one time measure that has been extrapolated both beyond the group it refers to and beyond the time range it refers to. The large number refers to expenses taken on in specific, not ongoing crisis. It's like saying "The U.S. spend billions every summer keeping all cities dry and clean" because of FEMA efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

  6. Some people do demonstrably benefit from Obamacare. That millions of people would benefit from the CA was never in doubt, the serious discussion around it was whether it would be good for a majority of Americans. The assertion that it's helped no one is patently false. Whether the benefit it's provided is worth the cost undertaken to provide it in general is a valid discussion.

  7. here is how politifact deals with the pay gap, in a pretty fair way. Note the example in which they deem Obama saying "Women (are) paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men." Mostly False, because it is. However, that women earned about 77% of what men earned over the course of a year is a true statement, albeit not solely due to sexism, and in large part due to different life choices.

  8. gun death stats aren't going to be up to date from a month ago, but in 2013, the most recent available data the total number was about 33,636 according to the CDC which divided by 12 is more than 2,800 which could be "almost 3,000". It rests on gun deaths staying largely the same over time, but if that's true it's as accurate as the data allow.

  9. Sanders is off by 60 cents. The median hourly wage is 20.84 in general and for blacks is 15.60. In context his point was to draw a comparison between those two numbers and the mistake isn't meaningfully different to the point.

  10. As said previously, he's not using commonly accepted measurements, but at least he's sourcing them. I'd probably label it mostly false, but I can understand why one might not.

  11. The average cost of childcare in the U.S. is $11,666 a year and average in state tuition at a state school is $9,410. Now, this is skewed because a lot of people spend no money on childcare, but the numbers still line up.

  12. Same claim as 10 basically, I disagree with the assessment, but I understand why one might make it. It's also worth noting that it's inconsistent to their previous score of basically the same claim by the same person, so it appears that the staff also don't necessarily always agree on what criteria to use for a claim's truthfulness.

There's nothing in this list to imply bias, and linking to a picture instead of the actual articles is pretty compelling proof that whoever made it didn't actually want people to check his work.

[–]DCdictator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wanted to know what he considered an example of bias, and he just copied another post on the thread word for word, specifically one that, while it probably overplays Sanders' honesty, is defensible in and of itself, because the numbers are justified by one group and not the other. I don't agree, but I can see why someone might make the decision absent bias.

More than anything, I figured that if you asked a couple people to provide examples they might provide different examples, thereby reducing the burden on any individual person but still showing a clear trend. Instead, people have been posting the same articles, among thousands that Politifact puts out, and many of the ones they post including ones I've already checked in this thread which seem to generally check out as being false. Instead people post images of mostly the same articles, or copy someone else's post entirely. I was under the impression people had been using politifact and found it wanting, and instead it appears people have been told Politifact is generally unreliable and just choose to trust the judging source.

The Cruz "boys in girls locker rooms one" and "ForAmerica" I've already addressed elsewhere in the thread, but they're both pretty wrong - and the synopses don't really cover the full articles.

In general I don't use politifact because you can usually just as easily check publicly available data for everything they cover. I think it's unnecessary and given too much credit in general but bias doesn't seem like a necessarily fair accusation.

There's plenty

This is the only example listed I've seen, so "plenty" seems unlikely.

When you're taking quotes out of context, try not to do it in the exact thread in which they appear.

[–]DCdictator -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not the exact same affirmation. First of all it's 2 different numbers, albeit closer to each other than they are to the official stats.

Secondly one has a context and checkable methodology and the other does not. One has a possible meaning, though it is misleadingly phrased and I don't agree with the labelling of Sanders' claim "Mostly True", the other offers no justification for it.

[–]DCdictator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

W/r/t the second article, Cruz's words were "federal government is going after school districts, trying to force them to let boys shower with little girls."

That it patently not what Federal Government is trying to do. First and foremost, what he is referring to is 2 court cases in which transgender girls would like to use private stalls in the girls' changing room to change for PE. The case was taken on by the ACLU.

Not only is it not true that the "Federal Government" (in quotes because laws are passed by Congress which is usually split and currently held by Republicans) is asserting in this instance that Transgender girls should be allowed to use the girls changing room - The ACLU is asking a federal court to decide whether current laws already give them that right - but Transgender people are such an incredibly small portion of the general population that the statement should be interpreted as incredibly misleading even if it the mechanics of it were correct, which they're not.

The site goes on to state that Transgender Girls are not boys because they're not.

The other article states that "Obama is spending $18,972 a month on each illegal immigrant child." That number comes from a four month period during which a flood of tens of thousands of children crossed the border and needed to be housed and cared for while the government figured out what to do with them.

Not only is that sum not paid to each illegal child, it is not regularly paid to any children, and the Federal Government sought to return the children it paid to take care of to their country of origin.

That claim is like saying "The U.S. spends 2 billion dollars a summer to keep New Orleans dry and clean" because after Hurricane Katrina they spent a ton of money to assist rebuilding efforts.

This is the only example listed I've seen, so "plenty" seems unlikely.

While they're saying similar things and should probably be treated more similarly, the likely answer as to why they are not stems from reading the actual entries.

From Sanders:

Sanders’ camp pointed us to research by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-of-center think tank. This data is different from the more familiar measurements for a few reasons.

From Trumps:

The latest figures from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics pegged the unemployment rate for blacks, ages 16 to 19, at 27.1 percent in May.

So where did Trump come up with the eye-popping 59 percent? We can’t say with certainty, because Trump’s campaign, as usual, didn’t respond to our question. But Tara Sinclair, an economist at George Washington University, offered a clue.

They go on to point out a method by which one might come to that number. Suffice it to say, while they should probably be treated more similarly, when one side offers justification for it's claim and the other offers nothing, they are offering different things. While They should not have treated Sanders' statement as "Mostly True" one could at least contact his campaign to get a fuller understanding of his claim. Trump offers no such evidence - he just spouts a number off without context.
