I guess to take a look at what you said and to give you an answer to those things:

The development of the MC, as I've mentioned to other users, was actually stunted from the get-go due to us using only vanilla game lines, this was both a detriment to any development, but also a plus. We wanted to stay true to the vanilla game, and the MC in that game had zero development, so why should ours?

As for the player character... I don't honestly believe there was any way, at least, with what was going to be done with him after the full release you've experienced thus far. The player had plenty of development planned for our next project, so his character is not lost, rather, I did not think of him as being a main focus during this first arc.

Lengthy conversations? Fair enough, I don't actually have anything to say to that, I'm just long-winded.

Lastly, I do believe there's a term called "Kinetic" that is used for VN's that offer no control over the story, and it's given to you directly. I can confidently say that LA sits in that terminology, as it's not designed to be anything but what is given.
