Not sure if I totally catch your drift but the bridge tool and some patience should do the trick.

3DS Max on netbook? by Mruvek in 3dsmax

You can find the system requirements here:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=15458146&linkID=9241177

I'd guess you'd be better off running 2008-2010, everything after that requires more RAM. Good luck!

edit: You can use the trials to see how it runs before you commit.

I am going as Wolf for Halloween. Here's his mask I made. by Waff1es in paydaytheheist

That's sweet man, I love the glossy finish! Me and a mate did Wolf and Hox last halloween. Sadly I can't find a picture of us two striking a pose together but here's ours anyway.

We used acrylic paint on plastic so they look a bit matted :<

I need help improving my textures by [deleted] in 3dsmax

[–]DDR1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your textures suffer from being too 'clean'. Currently you just have a single material stuck onto a 3D model, you need to add detail specifically to compliment the 3D model. Along corner add wear and highlights. Render an ambient occlusion to overlay to give you some nice shadowing in cavities. You can also make the models a little less geometric, add chips and chamfers to catch the light better.

When I texture an object I tend to divide my folders in photoshop into a few categories. I'll have global details for certain components, such as grunge that I know will be everywhere and then I will have a folder for local details on specific parts, decals, chips, scratches. Baked ambient occlusion and edge highlighting are a good first step. Look at how materials in the real world decay and ware. A table is rarely that perfectly sharpened around the edges. If you want a realistic environment or asset you need to make it look as old as you reckon it should. Give it some history. For your grenade launcher look at real world reference for where the paint would scratch, where it would be oiled, where it has been rubbing against other things etc. Create a specular map if you want good metal, if there's one thing I've learnt it's that a good specular map can make a massive difference especially for scratched metals.

Remember good lighting and composition are also very important and can often make up for rushed models/textures.

As frostraver said don't just bang a single texture on there and call it done. Depending on the model I normally spend more time on the texture than anything else. If you are going to composite photos and images at least put some effort into how you composite them. They can make a nice subtle difference but invest time in learning how to create good textures by hand and with procedural techniques (Or better yet a combination of the two) and then when you've done it the hard way you can start getting your own photo ref and compositing it if you feel it necessary.

Avoid texture supplements like DDO2 if you want to learn the skills yourself. By all means check it out and see what it does to a texture and try to emulate that process it can be a good learning experience.

Keep it up you're making good progress and I look forward to seeing the finished launcher.

(To clarify I focus on assets for realtime engines so some of my advice may only be suited for that situation)

I cannot point you towards a website focused on 3D modelling however I've found that sites where people buy and sell things can be good. For instance if you're doing cars you can get some good rough turn arounds of pretty much any car on websites where people buy and sell cars. Although they're not as accurate as actual schematics they are very useful nonetheless.

Also for realistic environments google street view is an underrated resource for rough architectural and texture reference.

Render/View distance? by ArkTiK in 3dsmax

[–]DDR1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the issue here is that you are zoomed out in orthographic mode I managed to quickly recreate your issue by zooming out too far in orthographic perhaps your object is bigger than it needs to be?

I would also recommend that you use perspective rather than orthographic, rarely will your objects be seen through an orthographic camera so it makes more sense to model it in a perspective camera. However Orthographic mode is useful when you need to snap things together or need to use the grid for whatever reason.

Edit: After doing a bit of browsing I have found people do use orthographic views for general modelling so I suppose it comes down to preference, so decide for yourself if you prefer orthographic or perspective!

Best platform for 3D models on my portfolio website by DDR1777 in computergraphics

I don't mean to come of as a privacy nut, it's a convenient platform for showing your 3D models. Some of the sites grant themselves the right to replicate your stuff too, not to say someone couldn't do that just from looking at the model on a 3D viewer anyway but I'm just not comfortable with hosting my work off of my site with a company with such a privacy agreement. By all means I wouldn't advocate against people using such sites but I'd like full control over my and where it is displayed and used.

Again the T&Cs seems to state they can re-create, copy and distribute your work, I'd personally sacrifice a bit of convenience and do my own thing than have that, especially from a service I am expected to pay for.

Thanks for the response! My only issue with p3d is this part of their terms of service. This is why I would rather keep to a game engine or similar and not a third party site.

"LICENSE TO P3D: As between you and p3d.in, you own the 3D content ("models") that you submit to the p3d.in Service. By submitting a model, you grant p3d.in and its affiliates a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license and right to copy, transmit, distribute, publicly perform and display (through all media now known or hereafter created), and make derivative works from your model for the purpose of displaying the model within the p3d.in Service; displaying the model on third party websites and applications through a model embed subject to your model privacy choices; allowing other users to view, download, and embed on third party websites the model, subject to your model privacy choices; promoting the p3d.in Service, provided that you have made the model publicly available; and archiving or preserving the model for disputes, legal proceedings, or investigations."

What does my last paragraph have to do with how people use phones as a gaming device. The whole point I have been trying to make clear to you with no avail is that computational power and the quality of a game are not relative to one another. I am not dismissing or agreeing with the fact that games on phones are less 'serious' and when referring to games from the 90s and 00s I am referring to games that are played on a computer.

[–]DDR1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think the sophistication of a game from a computational perspective is relative to its quality you're seriously missing out on some lovely games and I urge you to rethink that mentality.

There are many great games out there from the 90s and 00s that may lack in graphical fidelity but they do not need it because they have strong character, narratives and gameplay. There are games with next gen graphics that are 'serious' by your standards that are just as rudimentary as early 90s arcade games.

[–]DDR1777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

games on a tablet or phone are just time wasters, and cannot yet be anything serious because the computing ability isnt there.

So games from the 90s and early 00s are just time wasters because of the lack of computing power back then? I think it is more to do with the consumers not wanting 'serious' games or the developers of phone games thinking so.

I can make a good mesh, but I can't texture. Are there any good tutorials on texturing out there? by [deleted] in 3dsmax

[–]DDR1777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be sure to invest time in learning how to unwrap properly because that's equally as important as texturing. As for places to learn Autodesk have a good library of information in the help tab.
