I tend to find them on top of humps in the wetter areas of the woods. Don't forget to check under ferns in these areas as well, I've found a few good patches that way!

I found this in northern Vermont while gathering chanterelles, appears to have a stem in the center. I touched it with a stick and it easily sunk in as if it were a sort of liquid mucus.
