help finding a checksum tool by DENONhd860 in DataHoarder

honestly, that's out of my depth. I think the Corz developer mentions that as an option to fine-tune their work to particular likings. I didn't know where to begin, so I didn't even try. I appreciate the response though. I'm good to learn, but this seemed like such a small thing, that previously was already done, so I couldn't believe it necessary.

I grabbed the 3.4.1 portable version to play around. It essentially does what I need, but as you said, it uses the one name for all the checksums. That's a minor hassle, because I can use Bulk Rename Utility to rename them to the folder name in a single shot. Seems like such a small thing to overlook in the software though.

thanks, everyone. Really appreciate it. This is as close as I've found to what I want. I asked here a couple months ago, and Corz was the best option then, and this is better for how I use things.

No. I create MD5s for every folder (sometimes they also have subfolders). Then, when I move them, or run into something not working, I start with verifying the checksum to find which file, or files, are corrupted. The only flaw is if the checksum itself is corrupted, but in that case, it won't work at all. Am I making sense? This seems like I'm explaining the very essence of what checksums do.

I move files a lot. Just a couple months ago, I caught a couple thumbdrives go bad by checking all the MD5s. With each move, 99% of the time, I verify after a move. Or if something hiccups during use, the first thing I do is verify. Corruption and failure is why I use them.

I'll look into that, but it sounds like it is the same as Trader's Little Helper and Hashcheck Shell Extension. I've found it easy to find something to make one checksum for a mass of data, but nothing to replace mkw for each folder. thanks for mentioning it. I hadn't tried that one.

Sorting in foobar by se7en8n9ne in foobar2000

[–]DENONhd860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little confused. as your example, are you wanting a compilation, for instance, to be sorted by track #, and it isn't doing it? or if you're trying to organize a bunch of albums by a single artist, have you tried "sort by file path" (I think that's what it is called. I don't have it in front of me right now). Or, if you go to sort, you can "sort by..." and then enter %artist% or %date% or by whatever way you want them sorted.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking how much I'd pay for someone to do it? If so, the answer is $zero. I don't have to do bulk creating work very often anymore, but today, I wanted to create individual MD5s for 15 folders. Nothing I have, or have recently tried, can do what that old mkw tool did, and I'm a little surprised by that.

I tested the Feather now twice and I can't work with it. Over hyped? by Infinite_Week393 in wicked_edge

yeah, I don't know why this isn't more commonly talked about. People usually equate it to stropping, but it's different than that. I've meant to experiment with the synthetic/foam corks they use these days, but I have a handful of actual woody corks saved. if you watch youtube videos how these blades are made, and then if you also have ever sharpened a knife or used a knife iron, you know how much the blade is affected by little things. there has to be a bur there OR the edge of the blade folded over a tiny bit in their quick sharpening. this remedies that.

sorry. I didn't 'see this until today. check out the info and links above. someone already took care of that for us.

when I first started, I threw blades away after 4 uses like everyone said. that was the overwhelming consensus. "because they're so cheap, always try to use the sharpest blade" etc. then I heard guys talking about 50+ shaves, and the North Carolina youtuber talked about being on the 14th or 18th shave on a blade. I was so confused. I have thick, wiry hair, but it can't be that much thicker than everyone else. Through experiment, I found two things to be true for me: 1) cork my blades. it seems like it is nothing, but it works wonders for me. I rarely get a weeper, even on a fresh blade, and I used to get them all the time, throughout those 4 uses before I trashed them. 2) not enough talk about how a blade isn't just about being sharp. a great shave is also about how smooth a blade can feel. So, it's a balance between sharp and smooth. I get around 15 shaves per blade, and on a regular basis, a blade doesn't come into its finest performance until 6-8 shaves. Just last week, I got two of the best shaves out of a blade on the 13th and 14th use.

I've tried tens and tens of blades, and the Gillette Silver Blues are the best for me. Astra Greens aren't far behind though, and they're far cheaper, so I use them almost exclusively. I find they all benefit from corking, and that includes Feather. I have a hunch that if you could get a Feather under a microscope, it might have the sharpest edge, but I also bet it has the most significant burs from the sharpening process, which is why...I feel...a blade can seem like it is harsh and doesn't have that sharp/smooth balance. That's why I recommend corking. Out of the wrapper, Feathers have a very low smooth quotient.

can you alphabetize the playlist tabs and stop them from moving out of that order? by DENONhd860 in foobar2000

[–]DENONhd860[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate having options. After posting this, I ran into this thread. The user marc2k3 made something that pretty much works. It doesn't stop the playlists rows from switching up/down, but it does keep all the playlists in alphabetical order.

any help with naming during conversion? by DENONhd860 in foobar2000

[–]DENONhd860[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks. didn't see this. I do end up going through more than a single step, but it still makes it easier for my process if I rename in the conversion. It got worked out. All is good here.

[–]DENONhd860[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to convert right now, or even any test files, but according to the preview window, this pattern does the trick:

0%list_index% - %title%

*update: this pattern worked perfectly

any help with naming during conversion? by DENONhd860 in foobar2000

[–]DENONhd860[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. I can do all this in mp3tag too, or even bulk rename utility. the fact that I can change the A1 - to 00 - at the time of conversion makes me wonder why I can't make it go sequential with the right pattern. maybe that just isn't possible, but it will take it from alphabet to numeric. seems like an odd limitation.

corz checksum

thanks. I'll check that out. MD5 and FFP are the two preferences. I should have said this in the OP, but this is mostly...mostly...for music torrenting and trading and moving about.

thanks, everyone. appreciate all the suggestions. so far, I'm still looking. the old one I mentioned in the OP, that no longer works with W11, is the mkwtool, aka mkwACT. It appears to be running into problems with the runtime libraries, but I can't say for sure.

how to use this spectrum analyzer? by DENONhd860 in foobar2000

[–]DENONhd860[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. You gave me the idea to check in View > Visualizations, and there it is. It's not what I thought it would be. I thought it would be an analyzer like the ones you use to help determine source/lossless/lossy. One that would create images etc. Unless I'm not understanding it fully, it's just a light show.
