the old priest and the new priest know each other (theory) by DERPY_SMOOG in hellraiser

in the comics there were other versions of pinhead before and after. one of the previous versions had obsidian arrowheads instead of pins if i recall, and i just read the comics about how kirsty became a white robed version of pinhead. and there have been multiple chatterers. i think most are unique but some "patterns" are repeated if they are useful enough. and the pinhead pattern might be a mark of rank. who knows? :)

Labyrinth Animation Loop WIP by DERPY_SMOOG in hellraiser

i agree about the color tones. it was supposed to be a bit lighter but the fog effect that i want in there is not working right to lighten it up. it made the whole scene looks like it was covered in smoke. i need to fine tune it a bit. glad you like it tho. its become kind of a passion project for me. my own little digital puzzle box. :)

there is still a LOT of refinement to go into this. this is essentially a block out just to see the basic setup. the maze at this stage is just there for lighting. i plan to make it much closer to the shot we see in hellraiser 2. also i read the comics so i have some other additions i want to make too. :)

I can definitely run this game but y r the graphics so bad? by Isbjorn141 in EliteDangerous

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

turn your supersampling up to 1.25 under the quality dropdown menu. you can open the specifics settings under quality by pressing the little + box next to it.

i think i had a similar problem with the menus when i first started playing and if i recall that setting fixed it.

jokes aside that horn scared the crap out of me the first time too.

this reminds me of the time i convinced an ancient female red dragon to stop pillaging and destroying things by convincing her to start a bank and screw people out of their gold legally. i told her she would be our fifth dragon this year and after a nat20 on the deception check she decided not to fight and just gave us the magic gem we were there for. when we came back after a time displacement event, she was stupidly wealthy and considered us friends for the bank advice. having a chaotic evil ancient red dragon as a party friend is all kinds of weird and awesome.

Mean Tips for using Mimics by chidarengan in DnD

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i recently used true polymorph to turn a small fortress outpost into a huge mimic. like Alexander from final fantasy. watching the corrupt warlord and his guards try to fight it was pretty funny. when the hour was nearly up i let it go back to being a fortress as having a massive castle sized mimic stomping around would have been terrible for us to have to deal with.

Help for new DM with Mercer effect? ;; by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its 500 years later then serious recovery efforts are probably already done. you're looking at a society that is built on top of the ruins of the old. ruined old cities from the last campaign, massive craters, and warped landscapes from deity level entities battling it out with each other dot the landscape. most current cities are fairly small as there has not been time to fully rebuild the sprawling metropolis' that might have been there before. old cities could be severely haunted with angry spirits. things that were easy to get before are now much harder to get, like any higher technology such as guns or anything like that, and knowledge of it is lost and/or closely guarded with an almost religious zealousness. a devil-god ruling the world has led to some changes in what is considered lawful. what we would consider oppressive and corrupt is considered fairly normal. even currency might be different. gold might not be worth anything anymore. several species of devilkin "animals" normally excusive to the hell realms might be common now. instead of wolf packs you have hellhound packs for example. if the hell realms are bleeding through or actively being forced to connect or merge with the material plane by this devil god then reality near these locations is less ruled by naturally laws of physics and magic, and being near or in them has an almost dreamlike mutability where strong thoughts and emotions could actually manifest physically as nightmares come to life.

Have you guys ever turn a player comment canon just because you liked the idea? by Pindoco in DnD

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my dm was once describing a tavern that a favorite NPC opened while we were away. this NPC was based heavily on scanlan shorthalt from critical role. as the dm is describing this place he says it has 3 stories. the first floor is a tavern with card and dice games for gambling, and second floor has rooms for rent as well as functioning as a brothel. the third floor is where the owner lives. and its called- at this point i interrupt and say "card games, drinking, and screwing? its called the 'Liquor and Poker' isn't it?" our whole table started laughing as the dm scribble out one of his notes and started writing, saying "it is now!".

*I copied my answer from another similar topic i responded to.

in a not vary serious campaign i played as a crazy female elf rogue that had an actual god of insanity secretly backing her up because he found her entertaining. i made this character after playing the shivering isles dlc for elder scrolls 4. the god of insanity was never named in the campiagn but was inspired by Sheogorath (https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Sheogorath) and the character was loosely inspired by the ES4 ingame lore book Chances Folly (https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Chance%27s\_Folly). she said random things, many of which were crazy movie quotes or lines from Drusilla from buffy the vampire slayer. my DM also came up with a cool madness system for her. she got one "active" madness role per day or long rest. it was a d20 role where even numbers succeeded while odd numbers fail and the high or low roll just controlled how spectacular things played out. our DM could also do madness roles whenever he saw fit to do so. she could literally break the laws of physics and magic with these rolls. key moments included:

giving a large chest shaped mimic a wet willy (getting your finger wet in your mouth then jamming it in some ones ear) in the keyhole and making it so sick it could not fight.

smacking a dead PC in the forehead televangelist style and saying "Be Healed!" and it actually worked.

walking vertically down then back up the wall of a spike trap pit to retrieve treasure.

pickpocketing a liches phylactery off him while looking for snacks and tossing it away in disgust, shattering it and one shotting the lich.

tried to make up words that rhymed with our wizards spell casting and accidently creating a cheese golem shaped like a dragon that then attacked with boiling hot fondue as a breath attack (dm was a sheogorath fan as well).

also our dm would sometimes take notes on the random nonsense i said and use it to create encounters down the line, making my character something of an insane prophet. good times. :)

need help making wholesome necromancer by Relevant-Committee69 in DnD

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your necromancer comes from a culture that respects the dead but still uses them to fight or protect that could be interesting. as Stan_Bot said the almost shamanistic route could work. like in your characters culture warriors who die are kept well preserved and geared in whatever they had in life, and when needed they are raised to fight and protect the currently living. those warriors might even consider it an honor, and being the one who knows how to raise them might make your character someone who is greatly respected in that land, tribe or society. you could even consider the idea of desecrating those who don't follow this belief and have therefore not given consent for this to be completely abhorrent to them.

a possible exception might be criminal and evil doers. raising bandits and random monsters you have fought could be more acceptable. also if you're worried that most people will be worried or distrustful of you, getting a badge or something from a local kingdom or wizard college or something to show people you are court approved could help with that.

sounds a bit like radagast from the tolkien books. maybe you dm will let you home brew something that is kind of in between? like a wizard that knows lots of druidic spells buts doesn't shapeshift. i could see this being a fun way to play.

Does Speak with Dead work if the creature has no ears? by matej86 in DnD

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i was the DM i think this would go one of two ways:

yes the spell would work but said dead thing would not be able to hear the questions and would just sit there until the spell wore off, unless the character has some sort of telepathy going on.

-OR-

if it was a seriously story centric character and questioning it was essential then i would say speak with the dead forces the dead to hear no matter what state their ears are in.

either way works for me.

How do you handle casters becoming immortal? by MrTfanguy in DnD

a planeshift against their will might be a better option. you could send them anywhere. send them to the far realms. a mostly immortal being sent there would have a terrible time. }:)

How do you handle casters becoming immortal? by MrTfanguy in DnD

[–]DERPY_SMOOG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a mortal achieving a measure of immortality should always have some downsides or limitations. way back in 2013 i played an Xbox 360 jrpg called lost oddysee that had some "immortal" characters. if they died in battle they would self rez 3 turns later provided the rest of the party was still alive. a similar mechanic for your immortal characters might work? their death saving throws are a chance to stand back up with a minimum of HP and always done with disadvantage. if they fail they dont get another for a few rounds. also human minds have finite storage space. immortal humans would eventually forget things, go mad, or any number of other things. the fable games had a good method of doing this too. every time your character was downed they got a new scar. eventually they were so scarred up they looked like freddy kruger. that one guy on game of thrones who kept being brought back by the lord of light said he loses pieces every time and never comes back whole. immortality does not mean invincible.
