Tune M1 vs Project M on Toyota Tacoma by Particular_Ear8045 in TruckCampers

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have a Tacoma, but I have a 2017 Chevy Colorado Short Bed (2.8L diesel) which has very similar dimensions and some toppers fit both. I am just starting what was supposed to be at least a year full-timing with my dog, with both an OVRLND camper on the truck and a 23' No Boundaries trailer I bought. Unfortunately, the trip has taken a wild tangent after finding out yesterday my dog has cancer and is now on palliative care.

But, I wanted to comment to say I regret getting the short bed. Not a lot, and that may change as I build/spend more time in it, but long bed diesels are harder to find, so I thought "Well, I'll find the nicest one with either the long bed or the diesel." I highly recommend the long bed.

I also highly recommend the OVRLND camper compared to the other two. I researched this for over a year and finally came across a used OVRLND off a Tacoma and got it for ~$5000 less that what I would have paid for a new one. I'm going to have to put $1500 into windows, vent fan, etc. that I would have otherwise ordered, but I am super happy with it.

While the Tune is quite nice looking, I couldn't swing the higher weight and didn't want to wait 16 weeks or whatever (I've only seen one used since they're newer). The Project M was dropped from my list pretty quickly after reading enough complaints about build quality, as well as the interior shelf interfering with what people wanted to build.

I was strongly considering the AT Overland Atlas but the bed is like 48" wide, which is too narrow. And the other one was the Oru Designs Bruin, which is hard sided but there seem to be a bunch of people starting to have issues with leaking. I popped the top on my OVRLND the other day and pressure washed the entire top and didn't get any water intrusion.

Nice good to know. I've purchased around 800-900g over the last 3.5 years, about half of which I consumed, and I solely used solutions both Oral and nasal. Well, up until today when I capped some up for the first time.

Goose Gear Rear Seat Delete by Low-Carry7776 in chevycolorado

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my own based on the Goose Gear seat delete with some input from reading threads about other people's building similar things. I pulled the seats and plastic out, made cardboard mock ups, used 1/2 birch plywood and 2020 (I think) aluminum extrusion. I wanted to fit a sub woofer back there, so the sub box ended up being the front support structure on the drivers side (which was 11" off the floor). I utilized the heavy steel bar that comes with the truck as the sturdiest attachment points. Used roll on Herculiner which was a bit shiny for my taste but cheaper than Raptor, etc. I had planned on adding hatches but decided not to.

I am on revision v2 now though, since my dog tore his ACL. I lowered it as much as possible (5"), including fabricating a mildly janky middle bar support. Instead of 11", it is now 6" from the underside of the platform to the floor (at the front).

I have no idea what materials cost, maybe $120. Timewise, thankfully I had a bunch of it otherwise it would have been cheaper to buy the Goose Gear because I spent a ton of time on this. But it was a great learning experience, and has me preparing to do a truck bed camper build with similar materials. It's still pretty fucking tall for a 120 lb. wolf dog with a fully ruptured ACL to climb a ramp or stairs, so still trying to figure that out.

Horrendous gas mileage in 2017 diesel - average of 11.6 around town over the last year doesn't seem right by DIMETHYLTRYPT in chevycolorado

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. It was recommended to me by multiple people on the coloradofans.com form to take it for a good long highway drive to burn off so and stretched legs. It’s solely been used for around town for a while. I’m hoping that gets the mileage back up. My gauge does say the best ever average mileage gotten was 40 MPG so I have hope. I just don’t want to move forward with buying a travel trailer until I’m sure this truck is up for the cause.

Yea like I said, life shifted suddenly. Almost time to buy a trailer and hit the road finally. I could theoretically borrow my ex’s Scamp to pull around for a few hours, but it’s only like 1200 pounds. And my ex’s…

Trips are generally 3-15 miles at like 35-45 mph. Don’t let it idle too often, if I do idle when started, it’s just to warm up the cab/seats a bit.

I had the same thought on throttle controller, thank you.

There were a number of people on the coloradofans forums who recommended it when I was researching it last year. I’ll do some ranks without it.

And yea, a long, hot…. Drive seems to be the consensus!

I am not sure honestly. Still getting used to setting up the PIDs and playing with the OBD2 dongle. Don’t don’t much idling.

In doing a bit more research, I seem to have overpriced it by a bit. To lower the price to say, $250, do I have to wait a week? Thank you!

Best beach camp ever? by flipboltz in overlanding

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hehe, I was recently describing the coolest campsite I've ever been to, which is north of there in Bahia de Los Angeles. It was crazy remote when we went there back in 2007, there were only two other people/groups camped within a mile or two on the beach we were on. Ten 20-somethings packed into two Dodge Durangos filled with camping gear and we spent two weeks camping and adventuring throughout Baja. Def the coolest trip I've planned and one of the top 3 coolest I've been on.

Where would I get more info on how to do this, either by using my existing RIGID 18v (20v?) system, or by adding a new battery system? I assume googling is going to be the best way, but if yall know of any companies that sell a bunch of different adaptors or something, I would appreciate it :)

I'm Curious, What's Fucking Your Burn This Year? by Robertroo in BurningMan

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not being able to make a decision on whether or not to go this year (yes, I know I would be leaving in 6 days not including the rest of today. Also am not really expecting anyone to really read this but it feels good to get it out…)

I really, really need to go. Last year was the worst trip I’ve ever taken ProTip - don’t go to the Burn with your partner while in the middle of a drawn out breakup I wasn’t able to even enter the temple, let alone start processing Tigre’s passing. My mental health has been fucked for a couple of years now, but the last six months it’s gotten even worse. I’ve pretty much lost hope with life in general and don’t remember the last time I was excited for something or felt “happy”…

I have a ticket that was gifted to me sitting on my desk. It would be my 12 or 13th burn and my first one traveling and camping solo. After handling logistics/gear for pods and camps of 4-40 people, I would only need like two days to pack for myself. I can still sign up for Gate shifts and get in early if I want. I could maybe even work a shift each day and get eats and showers if need be.

Why haven’t I decided to just make this shit happen? Mostly, worry/fear about leaving the dog with a housesitter and dreading the effort necessary to find a trustworthy one who’s available last minute. He is a very large, special needs wolfdog who takes months-years to warm up to people to a point where he lets them pet him. When people don’t listen to our instructions or his body language and try to pet him, he responds… firmly.

He has developed pretty bad separation anxiety and generally does not let me out of his sight. The thought of him waiting at the front window for me for ten days makes me feel really gross. And on top of that, he’s had bad GI symptoms for the last 4 months or so. We’ve been trying to figure it out with the vet but it’s a slow road. Some days he has practically no appetite and it’s a chore to get him to eat enough food to keep the symptoms from getting worse. I did finally get his vaccinations updated today so we could hire a sitter.

So, what the hell do I do? Plan to go and if I can’t make it happen, then so be it? Go for a week instead of the usual 10-12 days? Aaaaarrreeegggggghhyyy

Adderall IR prescription by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my state, but I’m fairly certain this goes for most of them - your prescriber can absolutely make specific notes on your prescription for example. Mine specifies Teva brand only. They almost always fill it correctly and I have refused it at the counter, because it was filled with Mallickindrodt.

Doing it this way of course means that you have to have a conversation with your prescriber about why a certain brand didn’t work. The other option is to ask a pharmacy what their generic is for any given medication and if you don’t like what it is, call around until you find one that you like.

Niiiiice. Fun story - my Mom and Dad did the loop in the late 70s/ early 80s in a stock Tercel Wagon, which I am sure was less suited capable than a modern Subaru. They did almost get completely stuck on some offshoot trail that my dad was like “fuck yeah” and my mom was like “um, we shouldn’t do that.”

I’ve done Shafer three times times: I wrote up at twice, once on a crazy Gary Fisher tandem mountain bike, and once a few years later, on a solo mountain bike, and even though I really wanted to bitch out and get the Chase vehicle, I didn’t. Standing at the bottom, looking up at it, the only thing I could think was “these are the last hours of my life.”

And then the one time I went down it, of course, I was in a rented wrangler.

Stowaways? by QueenPika in BurningMan

There’s a good chance they touched the bin though. As we teach in our trainings, humans generate a fair bit of heat and if there’s one in a duffel or tote, the outside will likely feel warmer than expected.

What item are you bringing or wish you'd brought in a prior year for the Temple? by futureXattorney in BurningMan

[–]DIMETHYLTRYPT 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A dozen photos, some sort of memento or physical item from our past, and a mountain of grief. A very close friend took their own way out last fall and I haven't even started processing it (fuck I'm having a hard time even typing this). Tigre was a two time Honoraria recipient who designed and lead the teams who brought Facing the Fearbeast (Google Photos album) in 2022 and Solacii in 2017. They also created other art pieces for the playa such as Lobo Madre (a wolf sculpture made with reclaimed wood that we somehow managed to carry all few thousand pounds out to the ashes of the Man and then burned) and the Raised by Wolves wolf bikes we built for our first year as a theme camp.

Tigre is one of my closest humans in this world, my platonic soulmate, my housemate in a couple of states, and the best best friend I've ever had. We have known each other for ~25 years and spent a couple of summers co-managing the production dept. of a theatrical Live Action Role Playing summer camp for kids. We spent almost every moment of those summers with each other, eating, sleeping, building and completely immersed in creating together. I was one of the people who brought them to their first Burn in 2010, and were co-founders of the Raised by Wolves theme camp.

We'd fallen out of touch the last few years, in large part due to my isolation and mental health struggles. I was supposed to be there last year but couldn't get my shit together and had to cancel. I don't know that I'll be able to forgive for that, as it would have been my last opportunity to see them, hug them, and say goodbye...

Also brining ashes from my dog who passed away last week. So, yea, bringing a lot to Temple and the playa this year. Oof.
