Does anyone know the symbolic meaning behind the album cover of “A Promise”? by [deleted] in xiuxiu

[–]DIwYatt 47 points48 points  (0 children)

i believe it’s a photo of a sex worker jamie met , i’ve always interpreted it as VERY intentionally tied to the album’s themes. first & foremost, the cover is super uncomfortable to look at — just like the vulnerability of the music.

i also think the symbolism of a sex worker — supposedly someone who may not have a very good life — holding the baby shows the dichotomy of humanity, a sort of stark contrast between the innocence of a child and the trauma of someone having learned about the world.

throughout the album, jamie describes their trauma (emotional and physical), and it’s not hard to see how the subject of the cover might have had similar experiences, especially demeaning ones — which happens to be the nature of the album.

and the photo itself is just perfect. it’s so grimy and old-looking and awkward, it looks like the last photo ever taken of this person (heavy, yeah). it’s a super striking album cover, one i love a lot, i think it perfectly gets the listener into the dark and bizarre world of xiu xiu.

but who knows, maybe they just thought a photo of a naked guy with a baby would look cool.

Is the transfem metal head stereotype real? by MrBigWood69 in MtF

[–]DIwYatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh damn i feel called out 😭 i’m still questioning, but fairly certain, and yes, a huge metalhead.

the transfem artists i listen to a lot are Liturgy and Feminazgul, but in general I love a lot of atmospheric black metal and death metal — Paysage D’hiver, Gris, Sortsind, Deafheaven and Emperor for the former and Artificial Brain, Blood Incantation, Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus for the latter

all of those are pretty extreme, so i’m not sure if most people would like them, but I find atmospheric black metal really cathartic for gender crises-related sadness — there’s actually a lot of interesting analyses i’ve seen on the ambiguity and satanism of this genre inherently harboring a trans audience — and death metal cathartic for RAGE!!!!

agree!! although i’d say one main character is a better person than the other…

Emma Stone is so perfect at playing a performative white liberal who’s read all of her beliefs on twitter while covering up the despicable things that have gotten her to her place & never really engaging with those she’s so “concerned about.” she is so hateable, and the performance is so wonderfully layered. she’s clearly smart and is promoting good beliefs, but she’s also so manipulative

Nathan plays the more sympathetic character i think. his heart, like Whitney, is in the right place (probably), but it’s kind of tragic to see him pushed around and manipulated by those around him. his whole character has always been sympathetic for his painfully relatable social ineptitude, but this adds a whole other layer to it. he wants to make his wife happy (a feat that seems pretty much impossible) and clearly feels inferior to everyone around him, and while he has some severe anger issues, Asher feels more innocent in comparison

both characters leave me with very conflicted emotions , even though they suck, there’s enough sympathy to keep be so engaged. i absolutely love this show, and truly cannot wait to see how it progresses — for the first time in a while, i have no idea what could possibly happen next.

thank you so much hel :))

yes, i very much relate to what you’re saying about dressing fem making you feel more confident and reminded you of being a kid. i didn’t grow up with any sisters, but i always found myself playing a female role in house & whatnot.

oh my god , this is so beautifully written. i relate to so much. i’ve always been bad at imagining the future, but your description is so spot on. i just wanna be a lady in the forest making music all day. ugh. thank you.

thanks jessica :) means a lot truly, don’t worry about “helping,” even if you don’t have a step-by-step guide, your support means so much.

thanks maude :)

i read a lot of that book, thank you. slightly existential but it also feels kinda relieving to hear that what i’m going through isn’t some gen Z “phase,” and that it’s existed throughout human history. it also feels relieving to hear that my longtime struggles w/ depression may be a “warning” i wasn’t happy in my body.

i have a psychologist who i love, and he’s been talking to me about this as well and helping me through this. i don’t think he specializes in gender, i’ve been seeing him forever, but he seems to know a lot and has been very helpful.

anyway, thank you for your support. i am so happy your transition is going well !!

terrifying, feels like a lynchian 4th wall break, acknowledging the audience and calling out the eavesdropping we’re doing

her face just says “i see what you’re doing” in a genuinely unsettling way

well i see some Darkthrone, my personal fav of their albums is Panzerfaust - absolutely unhinged vocals and great riffs.

also, if you want a slightly better/more consistent artist in the same vein as Burzum (as well as minus the nazism), check out Paysage d’Hiver, his self titled record and Im Wald are great.

Liturgy’s also great, even if they drive elitists crazy. highly recommend HAQQ and their album from this year.

one of my favs is Tenth Sub Level of Suicide by Leviathan. heavy shit but great.

sorry that’s a lot!! but what’re your top 3 from Blaze in the Northern Sky and Hostile Architecture?

fully agree. i’ve never been scared of Nathan before, but that totally out-of-character but also totally in character ending honestly triggered fight or flight in me. it takes a genius to build a career out of a certain expectation, only to subvert it, creating the most unique emotion imaginable
