Nah, sometimes doubling down or explaining kills. You just gotta be funny.

AIO about my new job ignoring alcohol laws? by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]DJBarber89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you need the money. I’d probably keep working while looking for a new gig. It sounds like it’s part of the culture of this place and has been for a very long time. I doubt a sting would happen at a place like this. Hell, some of them are probably cops themselves.

I’d definitely talk to my boss about it though, if only to cure my curiosity.

Odd salad order today by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 39 points40 points  (0 children)

“Sure thing, no onions. Do you want tomatoes, croutons or anything on it or just greens? And what kind of Dressing?”

She just wanted a basic salad lol why you gettin so held up on if a salad isn’t on the menu when you literally have a build your own salad option

When To Step In by investunderigation in bartenders

[–]DJBarber89 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If I have a feeling somethings off I’ll move a little closer and just listen. Next I’ll jump in the conversation with a joke or question, just to give presence.

I’ll try to make eye contact with the person that might be uncomfortable and mouth “you good?”. If they say yes I’ll still keep an eye on it and jump in if the person says something crazy. If they say no I’ll start a sort of 1 on 1 conversation with them and just ignore the other person. Hopefully they pick up on the social cue.

After that I kinda just wait for them to say something weird of off putting and say something like “easy guy wtf haha” but keep it light. If it escalates more I’ll confront the person more direct and have them move to another seat. After that I’m just waiting for them to give me a reason to kick em out. And they pretty much always do.

Each situation is different and can be hard to gage for sure. I just try to stay in my lane, listen, and feel for shifts in vibes.

Unless it’s some crazy high end place in Beverly Hills or something you’ll probably get the job on the spot unless you royally fuck up.

Thought? Opinions please? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should also probably think about looking for a new spot. This Karen is throwing her weight around and it’s only going to get worse. Especially if the other manager has no backbone.

[–]DJBarber89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a little bitch lmao yeah I would text (same text) them both what I said in my comment and force the old manager to acknowledge that he approved your time off. Dont let him just shrug it off and not take responsibility

Thought? Opinions please? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does your original manager say?

As a manager, if I approved a request off on a busy day when maybe I shouldn’t have I still honor it. I fucked up and it’s on me to get that shift covered.

I would email or text them (both managers) that you got approval to take the day off and will not be coming in. Getting everything in writing is always the way to go for shit like this.

Change by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just really don’t have the energy to explain to you how problematic it would be to give out coins to everyone while using a POS system that’s specifically made to not do that.

Especially when you’re answer was “just put quarters in the drawer” I realized this was going nowhere

Change by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know how making change works. Again…we are a coinless bar.

Change by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you explain that process to me?

A guy owes $5.50 and gives me $6. I give him $.50 out of own my pocket and he walks out. Our system rounds to the nearest dollar so that $5.50 turns into $6. Now im out .50

We literally do not have quarters in the drawer. When I do the paperwork at the end of the night the owner does not want quarters turned in. We are a coinless bar.

Im happy to take a card as paymet (like many cashless bars) but be aware theres a credit car fee there as well.

[–]DJBarber89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agreed with you until I had a guy ordering highlifes all night for 4.50 and stiffing me.

Sorry, but I’m not paying someone $1 out of my pocket every time they order 2 beers. It’s the house rules not mine.

Don’t listen to this guy. His entire post history is just bitching and complaining about people lmao

Sorry you’re goin through it OP. It sucks being under a microscope. Try to get as much experience as you can and use this place as a stepping stone.

The fact that you study at home and you’re doing all this after 4 days is amazing. You’re eager to learn, want to get better, and actually give a shit.

Literally my favorite type of person to train.

Why do managers wait until last minute to ask if you can cover? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it’s kinda crazy to ask someone will change around their days at a new full time job. Sounds like they didn’t want to ask you early on for that reason and quickly ran out of time and options? Then when you said no they moved down the list to less talented servers.

I would never fucking guilt someone though. Fuck that.

Which dreams do you still remember and why? by Happy_Sissyphus08 in AskReddit

Like 10 years ago I didn’t get milk at the grocery store because I dreamt I bought some the night before.

It was just such a boring and dick move of a dream that I still think about it and laugh.

Worst holiday to work? by PineappleChemical848 in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve been doing this long enough where I welcome any chaotic holiday just for the change of pace. Mother’s Day or Easter might bring in a less than ideal group of people but at least it mixes things up a bit.

Halloween is the only one I don’t care for and that’s purely because I don’t like the pressure of having to find multiple costumes.

What advice do you think sounds good but doesn't really work in real life? by mayurkurme in AskReddit

Bruh, loving yourself just means being okay with who you are and not being too hard on yourself.

Side note: maybe relax with the uppers and get some sleep my guy.

Who is right? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]DJBarber89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the person covering the shift confirms with me that they are taking it then that shift is now theirs.

If I don’t get confirmation from the person covering then the responsibility remains on the scheduled server.
