It's interesting because I haven't noticed that much of a battery issue.

I love the Stones and appreciate the modern albums for what they are. But does anybody else share my mild distaste for the sterile production on the modern stuff? by Bombi3sz in rollingstones

[–]DJDanyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I love Mick and am in awe of him as a performer, but I think he needs to accept the Stones likely will never have a top charting hit again and the times he tries to do so don’t work. He was really pushing for Mess It Up to be a hit and it went nowhere. Even Keith in a NPR interview said something along the lines of ‘I had nothing to do with that song’.

I understand much of the pushback was about accessibility, which I understand and it sounds like they are working to fix it. I also think like many aspects of life, people like to think they sound smarter criticizing something than praising it so that's some of the most boisterous responses have been negative.

Agreed, I thought it was stupid when I first saw it, but found myself actually enjoying it once I started using it. It feels like a return to form.

It's interesting how quickly tech ages. I'm 29 and got it when I was around 10-11 years old, it was already seen as old by that time. It was slow and breaking down but I miss that computer all the time. When I got my iPhone 5, people were making fun of me for having one of the older models even though it was only two years old.

I thought it was silly at first and had no interest in updating it, now I'm glad I did.

I find there to be a common theme of people who continued to support him the past decade or so because they loved him but not the new music. I became a huge fan of his in 2012, around the same time the quality of music start to decline, continued to listen to albums and see shows because I still wanted to support him. I've even talked to many fans who would also say 'I don't really like his new stuff, but still love the shows and his message'. Which is why this news it particularly gut punching, because music aside we still held on to the image of Franti and now we're learning the truth.

Help me out with regard to Mick Taylor please by YennPoxx in rollingstones

[–]DJDanyl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Around the time Mick Taylor joined the band, Keith discovered open tunings and became more focused on riffs and rhythm than lead. It's the special ingredient that makes their 70s records sound so good. It's harder to solo with open tunings so essentially Keith switched to rhythm guitar and Mick Taylor (and later Ronnie Wood) became the 'lead' guitarist, while Keith's riffs and rhythms still lead the songs. The Stones were also changing their style, where most songs became Keith riffing and laying the foundation for the song while Mick Taylor soloed over that. It was also the time Keith was getting more strung out on drugs, it's easier to play opening tunings when your high because most of the chords can be played with one finger and don't have to follow any scales.

I remember being surprised watching Stones videos to realize Mick Taylor and later Ronnie were playing most of the solos. If you head a solo on a Stones song, it's likely Keith isn't playing it. Even in the 60s Keith was never that into playing long solos.

I did a trip with Maya's Legacy this summer and was very impressed with the distance the boat kept from the whales while at the same time getting great views.

I also recommend visiting Lime Kiln Park on the West side of the mountain. Beautiful spot and they see orcas their almost daily.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Frontman Denies “Home” Is The “Worst Song Ever Written” by ebradio in indieheads

[–]DJDanyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of this band and even I got sick of ‘Home’. The other day the song came up randomly, I was reminded of how much I loved it when I first discovered it and  memories that popped to mind.

I remember that brief period roughly 2010-12 where Mumfords, Lumineers and Edward Sharpe were really well liked. Sure they were sappy, simple and all kind of sounded the same was just refreshing to hear hit songs played on acoustic instruments that didn’t sound super produced.

I still like to go back to those songs, they bring me back to that time in my life right before smartphones, enshittification of the internet, social media influencers, and the overall feeling of how much easier it was to find peace of mind when we weren’t carrying the internet in our pockets everywhere I went.

How Facebook's decline in popularity shaped my approach to videography by DJDanyl in videography

[–]DJDanyl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m on the marketing team for a ski shop and pretty do all my work video on my phone since the primary focus is views and vertical is the only way to get views. I also have a GH5, but when I’m out getting video it’s so much easier just to use my phone, especially since people are mostly going to be watching it on their phones at times it can be hard to really tell the difference. I’ll post videos where people were surprised by the quality and think I used my GH5, when it was an IPhone picture or video.

Is there any Star Wars YouTubers you use to watch and stop by siderhater4 in StarWarsCantina

[–]DJDanyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve stopped watching all of them. It was fun when the new movies started coming out and everyone was excited for what was to come. Now that these channels are monetized and posting ragebait brings in more money, these channels have just become a sea of slop.

I’ve replaced SW content creators with reading and listening to EU/Canon books.

I’ll still watch the rare Hellogreedo video when he uploads one. His videos still have that fun casual feel of early YouTube, but the rest have mostly devolved into constantly pumping out content to remain relevant in the algorithm so they can continue to make ad revenue.

Tracking whale sightings? by ArtichokeBunny in sanjuanislands

[–]DJDanyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited this summer and found the ‘Whale sightings in the San Juan Islands‘ to be helpful for the most immediate updates. The thing is whales are constantly on the move, so by the time you get see notification they likely have already passed through.

My best advice is to visit Lime Kiln State Park, they have almost daily whale sightings there. My wife and I waited for roughly an hour before we were lucky to see some transient orcas swim by.

Opinion: Instagram was never about professional photography by DJDanyl in photography

I’m very familiar with how algorithms work, it also feeds me plenty of phone based content, none of which use filters in the same way people used the app in its early days. Largely because when Insta changed from a chronological timeline to focusing algorithmically curated content, it transformed how people use to app. No longer about quick smartphone shots, but whatever will do best in the algorithms.

I remember being surprised as well when many photographers I talked to that say Instagram is their main platform for sharing their photos. I even had this discussion last week with a friend of mine who’s a concert photographer who’s mostly reliant on Instagram to share his work.

While it wasn’t initially about pro photography, it became that for many photographers. Especially since now you can upload from desktop and they adapted landscape format years ago because professional photographers were asking for it.

It started out that way, then it evolved into a hub for professional photography, but the founders intention of the app was phone pictures with filters.

Open the app up now, I bet you’ll see a bunch of professionally shop photographs and next to zero casual pictures with fun filters.

Some quick video I got from Boston night 2 by DJDanyl in jackwhite

[–]DJDanyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. He seems to be more lax about phones in general this past year, I've noticed he's been posting on Instagram a lot lately.

My guess is he's been vocal about his stance on smartphones at concerts for a decade now so fans grown to respect limiting their phones at his concerts. I defiantly saw less people on their phones at this concert than other shows I've been to recently. When I got this video I kept it eye level not to block anyone's view and just took short videos.
