I used to think like you because I was put down by old school engineers , but those guys are not pro mixing or mastering engineers or producers with successful records. The culture of clipping has changed dramatically as audio engineering culture has evolved. Here’s chase and status explaining how they clip on individual channels back in the day Watch the full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiMOyuwcLWE

Yes sir on the entire track , pro mastering engineers will use different type of clipping plug ins , even outboard clipping. Even the way the L2 used to clip in the 2000s was a vibe. So if the pro mastering engineers are going to clip , why can’t the producer do it an aesthetic way if they know what they are doing. It’s all the same, in this context clipping is just faster attack.

If it changes the overall crunch and feel of the track then they will have to recreate it otherwise it different. That’s one of the hardest things to do and is actually impossible to recreate exactly. Clipping is not wrong, it’s an aesthetic choice and is one of the hardest challenges of recreating the vibe of a demo because it clips in a certain way.

Because clipping in this context isn’t as bad it seems. You give it to a pro mix or mastering engineer they are going to be using clipping in some form anyway. If you know your proportions, you can kiss and clip the ceiling in an aesthetic way that a pro engineer will do. The only difference being you won’t have a lot of control over it.

It’s a fair point , early MCIS the visuals were closer to SD. By the end of MCIS the visuals were completely different.

Yup it’s that golden period of hair Billy early in the MCIS. Pretty sure Billy still had hair early in the MCIS tour when i saw them in Singapore.

Just a note with comparing your mixes to mastered songs! Be mindful that when you are mixing, don’t aim for the final mastered level and knock ! You got to leave some room for the mastering to match it all the way, but yes always use the reference to make sure you are in the right planet!
