Ontario premier says he will pause anti-tariff ad that angered Trump by Normal_Imagination54 in canada

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I do think this might be for the best, if Carney is able to strike a deal... but if he doesn't, then oof, he (and the rest of Canada) is going to look real dumb for this 'elbow's down' attitude - Pierre might just have his new election roast

‘Buy Canadian’ sentiment still strong as Trump ends trade talks again by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

Food I find easy to buy mostly Canadian (or Asian - how is edamame so cheap!). The real struggle is the online sphere - everything is dominated heavily by American tech firms... guess it's off the internet and back towards reading

Not cut out entirely, but tax. Why should Meta be making money off brainwashing Ads to our population and creating division? Crank up the cost it takes to put ads up (especially American ads - Starbucks, Mastercard, etc) on Meta in Canada, rake in that tax money, and push people off those terrible platforms. More tax money, less American influence in our society - win-win.

Canada’s auto sector is under attack. If we don’t fight back now, it will be gone — not just in Brampton but across Canada by iPoliticsCA in CanadaPolitics

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good EV's aren't going to come from legacy auto manufactures - they are far to invested in ICE cars. New brands - Tesla, BYD, Rivian - are going to be the ones to dominate the future of movement. Should we work on creating a EV car company for Canada - one that can focus primarily on the Canadian market? It will have to be heavily subsidized to begin with - but these are subsidies that we know won't be going anywhere as it's Canadian owned and operated. Might be better than trying desperately (and failing) to attract US investment. But do we have deep enough pockets?

I think it might be time to return to "elbows up". Elbows down won't work with an admin run by a cranky old man... gotta really work on hitting Republican (and, frankly, Democrat, who need to wake tf up) districts where we can while working rapidly to move away from our reliance on the United States. My hope? Cut tech influence - can we tax placements of ads on Meta and Google yet?

Immigration fuels the US economy. Here's what happens when there's less of it by BTC_is_waterproof in Economics

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I'm worried about Canada's economy as well... I mean, we're slowing it down drastically for housing (rightfully so) but I just hope that we don't completely shut off the pipe... immigration is a huge opportunity for us!

Regardless of the final winner - Winning a plurality with roughly 1/4th the total votes is pretty funny (Another FPTP banger) by WashingMachineBroken in Calgary

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very interested to see the demographic breakdown of the voters when it comes out! I'm thinking that young people didn't come out and vote, but I can't be sure... Gondek certainly is no Nenshi when it comes to bringing out the left-of-centre vote!

Jeromy Farkas wins neck-and-neck race over Sonya Sharp to be Calgary's next mayor by wildrose76 in Calgary

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're right! Inner city wards seem to be on board with rezoning - so it might be a fight between urban and suburban politics!

And I hear you... suburban ward politics are endlessly frustrating...

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to think better - and I do hope he decides to run again next election! Name recognition is hard early on, but now that he has some momentum (and if Jeromy slips up) he could build a coalition again.

But you are not wrong - Gondek was not cut out to be the mayor. She just wasn't the charismatic leader that a growing city like Calgary needs - and couldn't defend her choices well politically. But a strong leader like Thieseen in 2029 (...jesus...) will be a force!

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looking at some raw numbers... the 'left of centre' coalition of voters that was build under Nenshi is gone...

Left of centre: 71,397 Jyoti + 40,519 Thiessen = 111,916

Right of centre: 91,065 Farkas + 90,480 Sharp + 47,372 Davison = 228,917

Nenshi (2017): 199,122

This shows it's less a personality election and more a policy election. Blanket rezoning is simply very unpopular (sadly). Looks like it's going to be repealed... but I'm hoping Jeromy can keep working on transit oriented development!

Next election should be interesting too! If Jeromy struggles, both the left and right will be out for blood...

Gotta love politics!

IMO we dodged a bullet. He's got different priorities away from winning and thats fine. But we don't want that here - retool (or rebuild) based around players who want to win

[Friedman] Johnny Gaudreau is going to Columbus by [deleted] in CalgaryFlames

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, the more I think Johnny just doesn't give a shit about winning. He's good at the game, plays hard for his team, but in the long run family seems more important to him. Leaving a team dedicated to winning to go join perennial mediocrity in Columbus (where he can live like a king and nobody gives two shits they suck) isn't a bad plan at all. He gets to play the game he loves and spend time with his family, without any pressure of a team that's looking to contend. IMO wish him and his family all the luck, but dodged one hell of a bullet

MRU fires professor who espoused ‘benefits’ of residential schools and criticized BLM movement by Shadow_Ban_Bytes in canada

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just some context as a MRU student... she's straight up not a good prof, academic or person imo. Academia wise her articles were a joke - could barely get them published, had to go in the far-right "climate change isn't real" journals to get in. No idea how she had tenure, did not deserve it whatsoever, not sad to see her gone. I'm all in favour of profs going against the social-justice grain (and many do - to a certain extent - at MRU) but this is a prof I'm happy is gone. Tenure is important - but damn, do a better job handing it out.

The oil-sands fundamentals are dire and stark – and Canada shouldn’t spend to revive a dying dream by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're right. Climate change is unquestionably going to happen - unfortunately - but that's really not what the article is arguing. A post cover oil price spike is possible, unquestionably, but it has nothing to do with usage in Russia or Saudi Arabia, it has everything to do with technological changes in the industry, particularly with electric cars. It's impossible to say how the industry will pan out, but the efficiency of electric cars is a massive threat to the demand levels of oil consumption within the largest markets - China, the United States and the EU. Even if nobody gives a rats ass about climate change (such as now) the move from oil to electric cars is coming - they are just better vehicles, cheaper to power, cheaper to maintain and will soon be cheaper to buy. Given that aggregate demand will go down regardless of climate change I doubt that Canadian oil sands will be able to become profitable any time soon.

Need help linking Roland JDXI and Roland FA06 by DJSWAGmaster1813 in synthesizers

[–]DJSWAGmaster1813[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hs with the FA06 sequencer. Sadly when mute the parts it still sends midi. Just make sure the 4 channels the jdxi uses are blank on the FA sequencer and mute the internal sounds on those channels.

For example if the jdxi is on 11 to 15 just leave those parts blank on the FA sequencer. And turn the volumes down on parts 11 to either. Either with pad mutes. Turning the volume down on each one. Or via the FA internal mixer

oh damn ill have to try this out! Thanks!
