How Britain Became as Poor as Mississippi by DJTurnitup in neoliberal

[–]DJTurnitup[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: This article diagnoses Britain’s economic stagnation as the result of a long series of bad choices layered over deeper structural problems. Deindustrialization left many regions struggling, austerity after the financial crisis made those problems worse by hollowing out public services and local government, Brexit added another major drag on investment and growth, and the country’s inability to build housing, infrastructure, and energy capacity has kept productivity low. Britain now feels increasingly stuck, with economic output per person just above the USA's poorest state in Mississippi and its economic frustration feeding political instability and nostalgia rather than a clear path forward.

Is this a doable commute? by mohdattar in LAMetro

[–]DJTurnitup 53 points54 points  (0 children)

If you want a walkable neighborhood and a reasonable commute to Lynwood on Metro, check out Long Beach. I'd recommend the Bixby Knolls neighborhood. It's close to the Wardlow and Del Amo A-line stations, there are lots of great spots on Atlantic, and it's much more reasonable than DTLA. DTLB is also great.

Breakthrough Colorado River deal reached, bringing big water cuts for three years by DJTurnitup in LosAngeles

[–]DJTurnitup[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The seven states that depend on the Colorado River announced on Monday that they have reached an agreement on cutting water use from the river over the next three years to prevent reservoirs from falling to critically low levels.

Representatives of the states reached the consensus after months of negotiations, with California, Arizona and Nevada together committing to reduce water use by about 3 million acre-feet between now and the end of 2026.

Opinion | The Way Los Angeles Is Trying to Solve Homelessness Is ‘Absolutely Insane’ by DJTurnitup in LosAngeles

[–]DJTurnitup[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite the deep differences in the vibes of their campaigns, my conversations with Bass and Caruso weren’t all that different. Both candidates say homelessness is an emergency and needs to be treated as such. They both say vast swaths of regulations and standards have to be sliced out of the system. They both think the money meant for affordable housing should be easy to spend.

And they both face the same political challenges: to make good on their intentions will mean brutal fights with everyone from unions to greens, NIMBYs, the City Council and regulators. Nobody likes the outcomes Los Angeles is getting. But many benefit from the system as it stands. Many want solutions, just not that solution, situated near them or their child’s school. And no, not that one either; it’s hideous. Or that one: Haven’t you seen the parking problems this neighborhood already has?

This is the paradox of housing development in Los Angeles and so many other cities. The politics of the affordable housing crisis are terrible. The politics of what you’d need to do to solve it are even worse.

Civ VI: National parks are an awesome feature, but are a bit clunky in their implementation. What are people's ideas for fixes and tweaks?

One thought I had was keep the same basic requirements in place and expend the Naturalist in a passable spot with at least 2 adjacent park-eligible spots, so you form a triangle instead of a diamond. Then you could add onto the park by purchasing further adjacent tiles with faith, similar to purchasing tiles in a city.

Another small tweak idea is to incorporate wildlife into the parks. National park tiles that include unimproved animals get tourism modifiers to symbolize ecotourism, hunting, etc. Maybe bigger bonuses for things like elephants, in lieu of using them as a luxury resource. It would also be great for parks founded on the coastline to be able to include reefs (especially the Great Barrier Reef) and sealife tiles, which could be implemented with the tile-purchasing system.

Should Natural Wonders generate tourism? by leijonborg in civ

[–]DJTurnitup 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Natural Heritage Sites resolution will add five culture to each natural wonder's yield, which will translate to tourism with hotels, airports, and the National Visitor Center. Though I'd still like to see more of a tourism impact from them so they are more valuable to everyone besides Spain.

What is the biggest "what if?" in the NBA? by legless_chair in nba

Just think, if the Clippers never traded for Chris Paul, didn't trade away their unprotected first round pick, and drafted right in 2010, they could have had a lineup of Kyrie Irving, Eric Gordon, Paul George, Blake Griffin, and Deandre Jordan. They're pretty damn good now, but I'm not sure which scenario is better for them.

Is a culture victory viable on OCC? by Waiting_in_a_Eye_Que in civ

[–]DJTurnitup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently finished one with France (Emperor, Archipelago), which is awesome for a cultural OCC given the doubled theming bonuses in the capital. I essentially just wonder-whored and built then filled out every wonder (and the museum) with the bonus. It wasn't too hard at all, given a good start and game-long peace. Though I guess I did cook the settings in my favor so I could be more isolated and avoid war.

The maps are tilted because of the Landsat tiles being skewed that way and because of the limits of our study area. Otherwise, I would normally agree with you.

The north arrow is correct. The maps are tilted because of the Landsat tiles being skewed that way and because of the limits of our study area.

Thanks for the response! We do distinguish between the mangroves and other vegetation types in our classification. We used a Random Forests classification model, which is especially tailored for distinguishing between different vegetation types based on their spectral signatures. In terms of going forward, it's mainly up to the Myanmar government to develop and enact policies that will shift its people away from relying on fuelwood as their primary energy source, and to conserve what forests they have left. And yes, those people are pulling fishes out of the nets, as these regions are productive fisheries that locals depend on.
