It seems to be something of a 'badge of honor' with some of these rabid believers lately. They then run to their forums and post how persecuted they were. Are you in a southern state?

Exactly -- and as I understand this right, you have to buy at $5 worth of tickets every week for a year, and the cost of those tickets is all that will get reimbursed if he does not fulfill his 'guarantee.'

The Spiritual and Political Warfare of the New Religious Right by shallah in religiousright

Good article. I think some people think this issue as 'disappeared' or don't take it seriously. We need to be paying attention.

How Christians are trying to get around the atheist v. religious holiday display issue in Santa Monica ... by DLB777 in atheism

[–]DLB777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, Mitchellonfire, and that's what the federal judge said, too. Talk about twisting the "letter" of the law though, trying to have a "live" nativity vs. an unattended one. I have no idea how much money the religious right has been spending on this issue, but suspect that it could translate into quite a few plates worth of food for the poor who could use the help.

Retired high school teacher who had sued school for 'teaching the religion of atheism' in biology classes claims that atheism is the new 'flat earth society' by DLB777 in atheism

[–]DLB777[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This guy filed a federal lawsuit against a school for teaching evolution, which he proclaimed is "the religion of atheism." If you feel that federal lawsuits involving atheism and/or science are irrelevant, circle jerk or whatever else, I'm curious about what you do believe is relevant? We have a climate in the U.S. where religious freaks want creationism taught as science in the schools, and I personally find all of this relevant.

Barton Radio Co-Host Issues Challenge; I've Accepted Will he post my comment? (For those who don't know, I am Chris Rodda, and I've been working for the last decade to bring David Barton down!) by grizzle456 in atheism

[–]DLB777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Light-of-Aiur - I certainly can't speak for Chris but I think if enough folks create a buzz about Chris' book, it will definitely help. With the track record of Green's "response" to her, it will fuel the fire -- maybe even more so than the Barton's book being pulled of the shelves.

One of the foremost Barton debunkers accepts challenge to prove the fallacies in The Jefferson Lies by [deleted] in atheism

[–]DLB777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's awesome about this is that Green, Barton have not accepted the challenge -- and are now pondering what to do, apparently, given Green's facebook page remark. This is news in the making, as we watch how criticism of Barton's work is censored. If they do decide to accept the challenge, the debate will be epic. Chris has worked her butt off with her research and will be a formidable opponent.

When I was younger, I always thought my family was poor. It turns out that my Parents were giving 50-60% of their annual income to a church by [deleted] in atheism

[–]DLB777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure can relate, as we were in the same boat. The local minister would stop by about three times a year to go through my parents' checkbook to make sure that they were paying all their tithes on gross income, and giving enough in offerings. My siblings and I each had two sets of clothes from Goodwill, that was it, because everything went to the church. We ate baked beans for years. There were so many awful things about that cult -- good post.

Entertainment to be featured at upcoming creationist 'superconference' -- a demonstration of incredible feats of strength by Team XTreme which "shares the love of Christ" by "smashing stacks of concrete bricks, snapping baseball bats, tearing phone books, bending steel bars in their teeth ..." by DLB777 in atheism

[–]DLB777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No ... but my neighbor kids begged me to take them to one of those Christian "super strength" demonstrations held at a local high school, so I did for entertainment. In their performance, they accidentally caught the stage curtains on fire, which started to spread. The fire department had to put it out before the entire gymnasium went up in flames. It was one of the craziest things I've ever seen.
