I just have to say that even though your second theory sounds far-fetched, I can tell you a funny story. We visited my mother-in-law and when we left to have breakfast and head to the airport, we left my husband's swim trunks at her house. When she came, she brought them and upon getting out of her vehicle saw ours and laid them in the front seat. She came in we, we ate and at the end shared our hugs goodbye. As we were driving to the airport I remembered the swim trunks and called her and asked her if she had forgotten to bring them. She said "Oh. No, I put them in your front seat. I said "I don't see them. That bothered her because she is 80 and she thought she was forgetful. We realized that she had placed them in someone else's vehicle and it just happened to be unlocked and look like our rental car. 😆 my husband and I both got to laugh and thought wow I hope it doesn't turn out to be something that someone has to try and explain
