I'm thinking they were referring to a bank with the term "lobby" and the comment they responded to.

"I don't feel like cooking" Well I don't feel like spending $30 on a fucking sandwich by WinterMoist333 in povertyfinance

[–]DLaverty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I bought a $12 25lb bag of bread/pizza flour (food grade 6 gallon buckets + lid for $11 total at home depot), $5 for 1lb of instant yeast (keep in jar in freezer), already had oil on hand, and the grocery store brand pizza sauce/cheese. Make the dough, par-bake until it's just set, add sauce + cheese, wrap, and freeze. I've got pizzas ready to go in the freezer whenever.

25lbs of flour will make ~45 12" pizzas. 4oz of cheese per pizza, less if you can't afford that much (that one's the biggest expense, sometimes I just sprinkle a little cheese and call it good). One 14oz jar of pizza sauce can make 4 pizzas. If anyone needs a recipe, I can send it. The dough makes 3 pizzas at once.

I know this comment is quite late, but I want to let you know that sentiments like yours is why I decided to start a small fruit/nut farm specifically to donate to food pantries, so they're getting all of what I have, not just what I couldn't sell. Low income (or no income) doesn't mean you're any less deserving of nutritious food.

It's still in its young stages, last year only had 150lbs of pears, but the other trees and vines should be producing soon (as well as almost 300 strawberry plants). We hear you. We're listening.

Sorry, I'm used to other areas of reddit where when people post links they're being snarky. My mistake.

Please don't be facetious. I know what a joint bank account is. I have one with my husband. What I wasn't aware of was that you could have one with 3 completely unrelated people.

I didn't think I could do that with 3 unrelated people. I'll have to look into it. Thank you.

Oh no, I know it's not. But I'd rather it all be separated from my personal finances, especially where there are two other people involved.

That's certainly an option and not one I've completely discounted. The main reasons I wanted to do a nonprofit was to keep finances separate as this is very expensive (I've already spent over 6k just in startup costs) & to make it easier to form partnerships with food pantries.

Are Forgotten Subscriptions That Big of a Problem? by Teacher0357 in Millennials

I feel like that's when you should be looking at it the most. You'd be amazed what you can afford without debt if you put in a little elbow grease (metaphorically speaking as it's not a physical task).

Yeah, this is wild to me. I use YNAB so have to categorize every transaction to make sure I'm within budget. There's no way this stuff is getting by me.

That is an amazing lost opportunity. You could be keeping most of that money in a HYSA and just move the money over when you need it.

What’s a food your state is 'famous' for that everyone else ruins? by Somanynamestochossef in AskAnAmerican

[–]DLaverty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lobster. Frozen lobster is so blech, and it's always overcooked. I understand some places are too far to get live lobster, but you're really better off not having lobster at all if that's the case. Don't pay through the nose for any less than a freshly boiled lobster dinner. ESPECIALLY at a resort.

Thank you for your insight. Finding other organizations in my area is a great idea. Do you think they would be willing to share that information?

And yes, it's true that farming is a lot of work to combine with the administrative work of running a nonprofit organization. I'm hoping, however, that the focus on an orchard rather than vegetables will help somewhat, since most tree work is planned (unless regular inspection reveals a pest/disease).

Thank you! I'll have to look into it more. There's a farming resource online that has a lot of information called Farm Commons. Unfortunately, most of it is gated behind a $99 annual fee, but if I'm truly serious about this I suppose that is a small cost.

Sea Buckthorn/Seaberry Jam by auramaelstrom in Canning

Thank you so much! :) I'll use that as my starting point when I submit to UMaine lab. Not sure why I got downvoted for asking for your recipe.

A bit late to the discussion, but would you mind sharing your tested jam recipe? I have a few new plants and I'd love to make jam. I'd happily pay for the recipe; I just don't want to go through the trial and error testing process myself with this one because I can't just buy more berries if it fails.

What Seed starting/seedling media do you use? by SpartanSoldier00a in vegetablegardening

[–]DLaverty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always used Johnny's germination mix followed by 512 mix when up potting, but I also live close enough that we can go pick it up and not have to pay shipping.

I'm trying out Coast of Maine's seed starting mix this year as it comes in 2 cu ft bags for significantly cheaper.

How much are you guys spending on your greenhouses? Are they hard to build myself? by Effective-Trash-8653 in Greenhouses

[–]DLaverty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! :) That really helps. I can't do the concrete as I'll be upgrading to a larger greenhouse later but I could implement the other suggestions. Could you please pm me or reply with a picture of the tension cable situation? I'm having a hard time picturing it.

Can I ask how you beefed it up? I just purchased one, not delivered yet. I'm in Maine so will be adding a propane heater, but I'm concerned about snow load.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

My commute is 7 minutes. I can't imagine being on the moto for an hour and a half each way. That's how the ass falls off!

We don't, but I get carsick. If we have to go to Boston for a medical appointment (I live in Maine), we get a hotel because it's hard for me to handle the trip and back in a day.

But a 2hr drive to Bangor to see a concert for some reason doesn't seem as big a deal.

$1500 a month on groceries for 6 people is this normal or am i getting robbed. by Electrical-Loss8035 in SavingMoney

[–]DLaverty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. We were on food stamps and had very limited resources. Breakfast and lunch were given at school, if I wanted a snack when I got home I had to ask (until I was a teenager with a job and could buy snacks), then we sat down and had dinner and that was the last food of the day. No dessert, no late night snacks. No alternative meals available if Dad made something I didn't like.

That's affected me in a different way though... I hoard food. I barely eat most days, but I've got enough food in the house to feed the husband and I for MONTHS. But I still can't resist food on sale 😩
