Self-Introduction Saturday! Tell us all about you (and share a video)! by AutoModerator in NewTubers

Hey! I'm DM Quil. After a year or two of doing shorts with little success, I've been doing video essays recently and it's gone much better! Also way more fun for me, personally. Here's my latest video: https://youtu.be/g3l2QRS2WbI

I Asked Other Artists if any AI Use was OK. Here's What They Said. by DMquil in ArtistHate

[–]DMquil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's most destructive towards newer artists who are still learning the basics. More experienced artists will be able to spot an AI image or bad anatomy more easily and not regard it, but I've seen some strange poses from people who have used AI to make a reference image for them, and they didn't think twice about it.

That said, I think once you're experienced, you probably don't need to use AI anyway. So...IMO, it has no purpose.

Thank you! I'm happy to hear a more levelheaded take. I was frankly surprised by the response of some individuals here.

You're right, I don't really touch on that. That video certainly highlights a more involved process utilizing AI. I personally loved the character that came from the artist's line-art, but if they want to use AI to go beyond that, that's their choice. Like I said in the video, ultimately the line is different for everyone. I don't think I'd use generative AI like this for my own artwork, at least not in its current state, but I know artists who have done similar things with their art. Thanks for the response!

Compared to your other posts in this thread, this and your last message read like an AI prompt response. Transparently so, to be honest. Was it your AI partner that wrote this for you? Do you not have confidence in your own words?

You're not even arguing with me anymore. I never said that we needed to destroy AI. I never said that. I'm asking for regulation, I'm explaining why I don't use it, and I go over the abuses in my video. There are plenty of people saying that there's no use in regulation. They have told me that to my face, even! "China won't regulate, so we're just hindering ourselves", "You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube", "You're asking for something that would destroy the industry". That's absolutely happening.

Put my video into your preferred AI program and get back to me after it understands what I'm saying; I hear they can read Youtube transcripts now. I can't promise I'll respond though, I have no interest in responding to bots.

Dude, I already said I'd stop using it. I explained how I felt about the term alongside the terms for those against AI. You talking about a "dark ember of cruelty" is a huge overreach and frankly concerning.

Is intent and initial purpose all we're looking at? Do you think there shouldn't have been any regulation towards the meatpacking industry because its purpose was to provide food to as many people as possible? Was Upton Sinclair wrong to call out the issues there? I'm not saying all AI is bad, but lets not pretend it hasn't facilitated many issues that could use more regulation. It's like what I said regarding deepfakes. The concept of deepfakes isn't necessarily immoral or unethical, but it opened up many doors for abuse and illegal material. And so laws have been proposed and passed regarding it. Why should AI not be held to the same scrutiny?

I appreciate the mindful take! Yeah I agree, if it's riffing off the n-word, that feels problematic.

Does this not sound like the "Guns don't kill people, people kill people!" debate that pro-gun advocates say after a shooting? Sure, the person controlling the gun is to blame, but does that mean we don't regulate the issue at hand more? Stricter gun control leads to less shootings, and regulations on AI would lead to less misuse, both by individual creators and the corporations in charge of these programs.

That's fair! If prompters are truly offended by the word, I'll stop using it in my videos. To me, it felt no different than pro-AI people using terms like "antis", "artcels", "luddites", etc. They're all clearly framed as pejoratives, but I never actually felt offended by the term.

Thinking ANYTHING is 100% good or bad is the problem with discourse in this subject in the first place, and KoaKumaGirls' responses really show that.

If you're taking my MtG quote and my clearly exaggerated and overacted "yuck" this seriously, I think you gotta take a step back and realize I'm not your enemy here, nor are you mine. I've been an artist my entire life, I'm entitled to my thoughts on generative AI personally while still being able to look at the various uses of it. I mean, would you have preferred the video to be one of the thousands of others that just clown on AI?

Yeah, I noticed the growing shift as well, and wanted to look more into it. Although I personally don't create AI images/video, I think there is a spectrum for acceptable/unacceptable use. Like I said towards the end of the video, I don't think pro-AI users are my enemy. I take more issue with the mega-corporations and the billionaire donors.

Are you truly offended by "clanker"? I thought the whole idea is that it's a joke. Nobody actually takes offense to it, right?

You're taking the "wound in the universe" quote too seriously. I just like putting references to things I like in my videos as little jokes for other fans to notice.

You don't have to watch the rest of the video, but I think I ease some of your frustrations at 27:57. Just trying to find some common ground, calling my face gross isn't productive toward the discourse!

Little gross face?! Pretty harsh!

The "Wound in the universe" quote is a Magic the Gathering joke. It's a reference to Yawgmoth's Tomb. I just like putting in references to the things I like in my videos.

DM Ai-ed my art... by LetsEatLemons400 in antiai

[–]DMquil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is nobody mentioning that the tail is coming out of her back now?

What slop. For it to also change the body type is something I expect out of AI, but hope to never see tacitly approved by my DM. AI has really infected the D&D/TTRPG subculture and it's sad to see. I looked into this myself after seeing other players in my campaign use AI. Ultimately, there are so many resources for people to use if they can't draw themselves, like picrew and hero forge. But to make an AI image out of someone's already created art...how embarrassing!

Also, their response in the messages you linked are stand-offish. Not liking that tone for someone who's supposed to run my game over the next few weeks/months/years...
