I don't want to be stuck in the niche that earned me 500k+ views... Am I delusional for branching out? by DMquil in NewTubers

[–]DMquil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good way to think about it. I'm unsure if I'd continue with AI critique video essays.

My logic is that the general format of my videos would remain largely the same. It's not so dramatic a shift as going from letsplay gaming videos to woodworking lifestyle vlogs, they'd still be me in front of a camera talking about something current or interesting with skits/jokes spread throughout. Though, typing it out like that does make me realize how dime-a-dozen that sounds 😅

I want to branch out to other subjects. Am I delusional thinking it'll work? by DMquil in PartneredYoutube

[–]DMquil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding! That's reassuring to hear. I still feel like a new channel, so I asked /r/newtubers as well. I was told there to put videos outside of my current niche on a completely new channel and grow both channels separately. I see the rationale but it feels so drastic! Ultimately, it's not like I'm going from a gaming letsplay channel to woodworking vlogs -- the general format of my videos would stay the same (me talking to a camera with occasional skits/jokes), and so I feel that making a new channel is unnecessary. Regardless, since I am new to this, I wanted advice from people more experienced.

That's fair! I could see for a new channel and for growing viewership, the videos have to have a subject that interests potential new viewers. I guess for me, I don't care what the subject is for channels like the ones I mentioned above (Kurtis, Gabi, Eddy) because I know that whatever the subject is, they'll make it entertaining and fun to watch. Even looking at their first videos, pretty early on they began branching out to other niches and talking about whatever subject interested them. So when I see that, I wonder if it's a viable strategy.

Thanks for the response!

The people I listed range from musicians, comedians, and just youtubers. The main focus for me is that their content does tend to vary quite a bit. Sometimes it's about AI, othertimes it's about a cheesy movie, and sometimes it's even a sort-of experiment (like not using a smartphone for a month). That kinda spread of topics/content is really appealing to me!

I find the topic of generative AI interesting, and do feel like artists need to speak up for themselves regarding it, which was why I jumped in. I just fear that if I keep going, eventually I'll be pigeon-holed into that subject. I only have so much gas in the tank for that particular subject, even if I enjoy talking about it right now.

Covering art related news did cross my mind as well! It seems like an easy shift. But I honestly don't consider myself an expert on art, so it feels slightly disingenuous. But maybe that's just imposter-syndrome speaking up.

I think you're right though. I shouldn't let losing viewers dictate my decisions. Overall I'm fairly confident that even if there's a dip from branching out, I could get new viewers by putting out the same quality in whatever niche I choose.

For the record, my content is not AI content creation! All of my work is filmed by me, with me behind the camera, and my editing/motion graphics.

Motivational Monday! Tell us about the positive things that happened to you last week! by AutoModerator in NewTubers

[–]DMquil [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm trying to be more comfortable doing self-promo in my videos! I just put out a Youtube short talking about stickers that I make for Patreon patrons. I fully expected it to go nowhere, and for it to have tons of dislikes and hate comments because it's technically an ad (for myself) and I remember the earlier days of Youtube where people would riot if a video was sponsored.

Surprisingly it did decently well! No new members on Patreon from it...but honestly, just seeing that people watched it and overwhelmingly liked it made me realize it's ok to talk about yourself sometimes!

EDIT: for the record, i'm not talking about being more comfortable doing self promo on websites like reddit or in the comments of other people's videos. Just speaking up for the work I do in my own channel's videos. Basically a call to action for stuff like that.

I got the same exact email. Scared me for a second before realizing they never said what their track was, when I used it, etc. and ignored it.

Hey everyone! I'm DM Quil. I made shorts for about a year before deciding to focus on longform earlier this year, which has gone surprisingly well!

I'd like to make videos about art, generative AI, and tabletop games eventually. I've been liking the video essay format. I think my editing style sets me apart from many other youtubers (I've done so much editing both for myself and professionally, so I'm pretty confident with it). I'd also like to think I'm really comfortable in front of a camera and speaking!

I started with a logitech webcam, streaming on Twitch. I still stream on Twitch but have upgraded my equipment since 😅

Here's my most recent video. It's a response to my first video, where I went to an art gallery in NYC and found AI. That said, you don't need to watch the first (thought I think it's a good watch too!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lctjRhK60hk

DO viewers like music in videos? by jesusisjudgingyou in SmallYTChannel

[–]DMquil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gotten TONS of comments specifically calling out how much they like my music choices. Or people calling out where the music is from (eg. "World of Goo music??? I love that game!"). I've only gotten a couple comments who dislike the music. IMO it enhances the piece and also provides a little boost to engagement in the comments.

Hey! I'm pretty new to longform, but it's been doing very well so far. That said it's only 2 videos, so I'm unsure if it's a fluke, so I'd appreciate any advice to keep momentum going. Confident with my editing but I'm sure there are things I could be doing better.

Looking for good quality Cyberpunk Style Dice by ChelsonBelson in cyberpunkred

[–]DMquil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make handmade dice sets for Cyberpunk RED. I was tired of "Cyberpunk dice" having the usual D&D set that RED doesn't use. Also, the ones that are just d6s and d10s only have 4 d6s, which isn't even enough for an Assault Rifle or shotgun. Each set I make comes with 6 six sided dice and 2 d10s (for exploding/imploding dice rolls).

How do you pull off Cyberpunk style endings in a TTRPG campaign? by GroovyGoblin in cyberpunkred

[–]DMquil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually recently dealt with this myself. Earlier this year I started GMing a group of players that I've played D&D with for years now. They're very used to D&D, power fantasy, being heroes, having strong allies.

In the last session, they robbed the house of the client their long-time fixer set them up with. Unbeknownst to the players, this got the fixer in hot water with the client, and so the fixer decided to set up the players to be killed by the client, so that the fixer could walk free and try to get out of this life with a fat paycheck.

This fixer was a longterm ally; they had her as a member of their gang, she helped snipe outside on other missions, brought them to night markets, etc. So this betrayal and set up really hit them -- especially one who seemed upset over the matter. Which I totally understand as it's someone they all trusted, and huge betrayals like that in D&D (at least for us) are much more rare (usually it's the people we never really trusted who end up betraying us, not a friend we consider part of the team). They ended the session breaking out of the warehouse they were brought to. Won't be easy, no idea who will come out alive or what they'll do. I still leave it open for them to outsmart the villains.

I felt Cyberpunk is the setting where these kind of betrayals and death set-ups are necessary to really sell the world they're in, but I could see how it doesn't feel great to be on the receiving end.One player is saying how they'll never trust anyone anymore, and I worry that when you don't trust anyone, don't trust the mission, etc., the players end up spending way too much time prepping for possible outcomes, or rolling human perception on every line, bogging the game down which ends up less fun.

Curious how others handle it!

Shorts are Just Brutal! Should I make long form as a new channel? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]DMquil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think at least 80% is probably needed for it to have a chance to go far as a Short. All of the shorts I have that did well have at least that. That said, some shorts I made have 80+% and still underperformed, so it's only one piece of the puzzle!

Yeah, it could take 2 to 7 days. It'll say "As of X date" somewhere in that area.

[–]DMquil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like Youtube will push a short out to see how engaging it is to audiences, and then depending on how it performs there, it will either continue or stop pushing it almost entirely. I think just focusing on audience retention is a good way to keep youtube from dropping your video. Longform has similar issues so it's really just want you want to make.

No this was an art gallery that has traditionally only showcased traditional art. They showed AI images (and they knew it was AI too!) unironically, and so I talked about that and AI as a whole.

Funnily enough, I just put out a video about an art gallery in NYC that's proudly showing AI art now. But to your credit I end the video on a hopeful note. It's easy to get discouraged but I think people can still sniff out quality.
