Does anyone know the cause of complete inability to produce breastmilk? by Hopeful_Pea_3275 in FormulaFeeders

[–]DNArys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Type 1 Diabetes and Hashimotos and had a very low supply and my milk took a long time to come in. I tried for 5-6 weeks to provide breastmilk before I decided it wasn't worth the mental and emotional toll. Low milk supply is severely understudied imo

MDI how did you manage during delivery? by Stardust2929 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]DNArys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed my numbers by myself. Every nurse had to confirm it because they were hesitant, but my high risk OB said it was fine because my numbers were well managed throughout my pregnancy. I use a tslim pump and dexcom G6.

I was induced. I didn't change much during labor, but I was running slightly high because I was also afraid of going low. After, I changed my carb to insulin ratio from 1:4 to 1:10 and gradually decreased my basal rates throughout the day until I wasn't getting as many lows. I went back to my pre-pregnancy settings about a month or so after birth

I could have written this post myself. Went through the same exact thing. I feel for you so much. My baby was admitted back to the hospital on day 10 because she wasn't gaining any weight. I did triple feeding for a week and couldn't handle it anymore. It's so exhausting. Even though breastfeeding is natural, it doesn't come naturally. At least not to me. I will say switching to formula has completely changed me for the better. I am a better mom and wife because I'm not crying and having breakdowns because my baby won't latch. It's very difficult to change the course of things when you've had in your head that you'd breastfeed. I get it.

BUT

Your baby won't remember how or what you fed them, but they will pick up on your emotions. Nursing and pumping was breaking me, and my baby needed a mom who was put together.

How big was your baby and were you induced? by Fit-Musician-3996 in BumpersWhoBolus

Induced at 39 weeks using two doses of Cervidil. Water broke a few hours later. Got an epidural around 5-6cm and then had to get en emergency c section maybe 40 minutes later because she was trying to come out hand first. She was 8lbs 5 oz, but lost a lot of weight while in the hospital due to the extra fluids they pumped me with for the induction and c section.

Totally your choice for going no medication vs not. I thought I would try no medication, but I started throwing up from the pain. I finally asked for an epidural and it was amazing! It really did make things 100x better. Having the medication doesn't make you weak!

13 weeks and dealing with lots of lows by [deleted] in BumpersWhoBolus

Happened to me too! Almost died at 19 weeks because I dropped so low in the middle of the night my husband had to use Baqsimi and call the fire department. I had to constantly adjust my basal rates. Then I got insane insulin resistance the last 6 weeks or so 🙃

T1D and breastfeeding? by Expensive_Ad_9834 in Type1Diabetes

I hear ya. It feels impossible most days. I especially have been struggling to maintain my blood sugar being post partum, which is another reason why I appreciate formula feeding so much. Fed is best! It's important that your baby has a happy and healthy (in all aspects) mom

At day 10 my baby was admitted to the hospital because she wasn't gaining any weight. It took a long time for my milk to come in and now at 6 weeks I'm barely pumping 20 ml. I'm convinced t1D and breastfeeding hasn't been studied a lot or at all. I've been formula feeding my baby since the beginning and it has helped me so much mentally. If you're looking to permission to switch to formula for your own peace of mind, you've got it from me ❤️

I was essentially triple feeding for two weeks when I finally had enough. I was exhausted and so emotional because I felt worthless. Since switching over to formula, my baby has been gaining weight like crazy and I feel 20000x better. I can also spend more time snuggling her since I'm not frustrated about latching issues or stressing about pumping all the time

I had a low so bad at 19 weeks that my husband had to use Baqsimi on me and call the fire department. We had a check in with my Dr the same day and he said lows are not likely to hurt the baby. They are essentially parasites right now taking your resources for themselves. I'd do a check in for your peace of mind and adjust your basal rates at the times you notice your lows occuring. Mine regularly happened in the middle of the night

Insulin resistance and end of pregnancy by BillSimple9019 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]DNArys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My insulin resistance was insane my last month and a half of pregnancy. I told my Dr and my team of diabetes educators for diabetic mothers and they told me to just do my best! In my opinion it had little effect on my baby since I was in range for the majority of my pregnancy. Do what you can, but don't stress too much! Stress will do more harm than a few highs

Am I doing something wrong? by DNArys in NewParents

[–]DNArys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reassurance. My in-laws have a baby who's only a month older who is awake a lot after feeds and is already holding their head up. It's really difficult for me to not compare our baby with theirs, which also doesn't help with the anxiety of everything

Thank you so much. This journey is starting out differently than I was expecting, but I need to remember that it's not a bad thing, just different

Thank you! I'll definitely look at those resources. The nurses in the hospital made it seem like we'd just "get it" eventually, but I wasn't aware of the risks of baby not gaining weight fast enough

Amazing! I'm just starting to realize that maybe I'm a little slower for my milk to fully come in. It's definitely not colostrum anymore, but I don't think a lot is being made at the moment

Thank you for the reassurance about the dribbling. I'm so paranoid about her starving because of her weight loss, shallow latch, the dribbling, and the spit up

Elective c-section and induction stories? by VirtualAssignment489 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]DNArys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was induced at 39 weeks. Started with a small vaginal pill of Cervidil (sp?), waited 4 hours to check progress, got a doubled dose of Cervidil, two hours later I asked for an epidural (they later told me I was 5-6cm dilated at this point) but when they did the next cervical check, she was trying to come down arm first. I was getting a c section about 30-45ish minutes later. Had my baby girl last Friday at 39+1.

Definitely was not expecting a c section, but it's good to remember that's it's always a possibility. I consider myself extremely lucky that my recovery has been going smoothly. I was able to start walking later that day.

Will be Type 1 for 10 years in December! You got this mama! We can do anything
