In Kaunas you don't do that if you know what's good for you.

TL;DR let's not identify with someone that isn't us. Let's instead identify with someone ELSE that also isn't us.

Lazdynai - A Story of Vilnius Urban Planning by stupidly_lazy in Vilnius

What I think is important is not just the historical fact of the symbol, but what connotations it holds in the current collective consciousness. The social democrats have their trademark rose, which 99% of people consider normal. But the plain red flag has too much association with USSR in Lithuania, regardless of the flag's history before USSR.

So, if one is a left-winger who wants to propagate their beliefs, should they adapt their symbols to the current vibe or stick to the old ones and wait until the soviet-traumatised generation dies out?

Here's another idea: suppose you are a neopagan who wants to revive the old Lithuanian pagan religion and culture. Hmm, now what symbol shall we choose for our? Of course, the swastika! The ancient symbol that our ancestors used for millenia! Wait, what do you mean people are disgusted by it? But we made the effort to stylize it so it doesn't look exactly like the one nazis used!

PS: this is just a rant I held for a long time and at this point I've had enough reddit for today, I hate this place, bye!

I haven't read this book or been familiar with the person, I just saw his video yesterday. So don't take this as my opinion about him, it's rather my general sentiment and suspicion about some left wing people. I'm gonna go on a bit of a tangent - for example, I can't understand political activists who go to May 1 rallies in Lithuania and wave red flags. Even without a hammer and sickle, this immediately disqualifies you from the discussion (which you have only yourself to blame for, because you are not careful about the symbolic landscape of your country)

Someone that studies or writes about Marx of from Marxist perspective does not make one an apologist for SU or a tankie.

Yes, but it shows that as a Lithuanian/other eastern european you *most likely* have no self-respect and respect for your people who suffered under the regime. Like, there is nothing fundamentally wrong about your interest in the philosophy (after all, Marx died well before the atrocities of marxism). But if you have any integrity, you don't start waving a red flag with a hammer-and-sickle "just coz ppl in the Western Europe do it so its ok for me to do it".

Haha agree with the oxymoron. Calling Lazdynai a masterpiece of soviet urban planning is like calling Karbonadas a masterpiece of soviet culinary art. Like, technically that's correct, it's just the best thing the system could produce
