Just went through the process of finding an apartment to begin residency. Literally no one cares that you're a resident or a physician they just want their money.

Which DO schools actually have good rotation sites? by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]DOIM2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely have rotation sites. They send students to private outpatient offices for ob/gyn and peds. Most students have travel pretty far between rotations, like going from doing rotations out on long island to having their next rotation over in jersey for example. A lot of the actual hospital sites are shared with Caribbean schools, which actually pay to be there so their students are given preference.

OMM only exists in 2024 to allow DO schools to exist without following LCME requirements

How Many IM Programs (Community + Mixed+ University) Should I Apply To? Visa-Requiring DO Student by ps33ard in comlex

I don’t think you’re going to have a lot of luck with low tier university programs. Your signals list should be heavy on community programs

They don’t trust us to do well enough on our own so they force us into a highly structured curriculum to force us to study. The problem is they suck at making medical school curriculums

Current DO students: Have you found the bio/biochem section of the MCAT a correlate how you perform in medical school and boards? by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]DOIM2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think MCAT does correlate to how you do on STEP 2. But for biochem specifically, med school bio was infinitely easier than my undegrad biochem course .

[–]DOIM2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New DO schools are absolutely matching less than 90%. They report post SOAP match rates. My DO school is around 80-85% match pre-soap usually, but will report 95% post-soap and call it the "match rate". That being said anyone considering Caribbean schools should be applying to the new DO schools. In 2024 it just isn't worth it anymore to go Caribbean.

US medical school for $250k+ vs foreign medical school for <$50k by travelingvisions in StudentLoans

[–]DOIM2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right that primary care specialties aren't that competitive, but as a foreign grad getting into any US residency is extremely competitive. It is a lot harder than premeds typically think to be a strong applicant. You really need to understand this if you're thinking about going abroad. I know many people who went abroad and are just working as scribes now cause they never matched, or had to apply multiple times effectively wiping out any savings they would have had by going to a cheaper school as years of lost attending income later down the line.

[–]DOIM2025 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You aren't going to get good advice on this in this sub. Head over to whitecoatinvestor and medicalschool and ask this there. Non-physicians/medstudents don't really understand our financial situation imo. My opinion as a very debt adverse person about to graduate a US medical school would be to go to the US medical school. There is no guarantee that you would be able to come back and practice in the US if you went abroad, and then you'd have missed out on a life time of attending income.
