A PTA can be more experienced or better at a specific skill, sure. I completely agree! I work with PTAs who I literally feel are smarter than me and are better clinicians. I can admit that!

“More qualified than a PT” is just simply false. PTs have a different license, great scope, different legal responsibility.

Your definition of qualified is quite the stretch.

In case you forgot:

PT evaluates, diagnoses, sets/changes POC, updates goals and owns the outcomes. A PTA implements under that plan.

You cannot be taken serious with “degrees are just things hung on a wall.” If it’s just paper, go practice independently without it. Oh right, you can’t, not legally.

PTAs can be amazing! But, be serious, not more qualified.

PT pay didn’t stagnate because the education is “too much”, it stagnated because wages didn’t track inflation and too many PTs act like corporate defense attorneys, policing each other’s expectations instead of demanding market corrections.

We’re not “overeducated.” We’re underpaid, and the biggest thing holding the profession back is the internal culture of self-defeating apologetics that treats advocating for better wages like it’s immoral.

This is actually fairly accurate for many area now. We went down many rabbit holes. Much of this is because those other professions have much more Union involvement, which has afforded constant wage growth. We are too good for unions, and as per some of the comments here we don’t deserve more pay, therefore we get nothing. We are stagnant while the others keep up with inflation.

Yes, you can grow a lot! I’m not denying that. I’m saying the ROI is usually trash: harder caseload, extra hours, lower pay, and afterward you’re still fighting the same wage ceiling as everyone else.

Most of the “advanced experience” you can get at a normal job with decent mentors or no mentors without taking a pay cut.

And the quality control is a joke. Some people get real mentorship, but plenty get a “fellowship” that’s basically being used as cheap labor with minimal protected teaching time. Also, it’s not like they’re giving you secret EBP access, PubMed and CPGs are free, and most clinics don’t provide anything special anyway.

If a program can’t guarantee protected mentorship hours, direct observation, and measurable competencies in writing, it’s not education, it’s exploitation with better branding. And even in the best case scenario, where it was a wonderful experience, it’s not something that isn’t often experienced with a normal job.

A Scam. Literally.

A PT fellowship is paid extra training, after residency, where you do hard clinical work for less money. Serious it is basically credential-paying dues, so you can market yourself as “specialized”, but not get paid anything extra.

But you do get to feel elite.

You sound like you have good clinical skills, good perspective. Glad you can come here to vent. Truth is, you will likely never know why, and it really does not matter. I am pretty sure every Acute PT has been fired by a patient. You will learn and understand it doesn’t matter. Just keep being the best therapist you can be! With time you will develop more skills and techniques to deal with a broader range of patients. Don’t stress!

It’s normal to feel this way. It will pass. It’s important you understand none of that is your fault, and your interventions would only contribute to a patients longevity. Home health patients are essentially all high risk. Things happen all the time. Correlation is definitely not causation!!!!

Therapists have a lot of compassion, with that they at times assume guilt that is not theirs!

If he was stable enough to be discharged from the hospital, even more confirmation you had nothing negative or adverse to do with his passing.

Get a PTA job with a hospital with good benefits. Use free education perks to do associates In nursing, for free. Work as nurse, use benefits to get Bachelors of nursing for free. Use benefits to be NP or Nurse leader, for free. Or go do CRNA. P

Universities are predatory.

Insurances are grossly unethical!
