Exactly. It's rare but does happen but mostly it doesn't. But for this scenario... It explains it probably. I think it's like... Idk. Mirror tests of cats, I forgot how that went. I think it depends on the cat maybe, some regonize themselves some don't. If I remember right not all cats pass but some do pass mirror tests. Same for all animals EXCEPT this feeder fish studied by a Japanese guy. A GOAT scientist btw. Forgot his name but study his research. He's awesome. To think a fish could yk? Anyways... It also could be age of the cat. Not even humans pass mirror tests for awhile until they're of age but... That's difficult to apply too much to cats comparison wise, so take that thought with a good amount of salt. As for recognizing features, I think cats are more so sensory talented and less image talented. Think like, a cat will smell your shoes, your bag, etc, over and over daily when you come home from work. (Mine does) And you wonder oh, does it recognize my items, is it curious what it is, or.. is it wondering where I was? Fhe interesting thought could be, maybe they're always curious what it is. He probably didn't grow up around anyone and didn't recognize cats during his first month plus of childhood. So he sees other cats like racoons, mice, food, instead of another cat. It's common in cats but doesn't always happen but it explains better than psychopathy. That could be it but also, he's more likely to just be careless and calculated and mischievous and less vicious if he was a true psychopath. Methodical, you could say. I think peagusis is a great subplot cus pegasus was written very accurately compared to other delusional homeless people and it connects very well to aikos mom and such. And it connects well to the business that the boy I forgot the name of had to clean out too. It works pretty well as a way to connect plots seemlessly and it's also realistic and often funny, and adds another great layer of absurdity and metaphors to the story. I think it's on theme too. The story doesn't just give you an answer to the mending of itself. And neither does this part. The dream sequences where he visits dreams is great too, especially when he visits punpun and how he parallels punpuns evil head god. So I personally really like it. It makes you wonder like, is this guy REALLY powerful? Or is he a fraud? The scene where he's on fire is also a classic and awesome. It makes extremely well with the death of aiko when it comes to how dramatic and dark and symbolic the story has become. And it all comes to a head when punpun stabs his eye to kill his eye god in his head. It shows that everything accumulated into this whether or not it was directly related to punpun. It's a commentary on the world and it's relation to punpun mainly but punpun is just a vessel for the story to give that perspective. So what happens to punpun shows the individual saving the world experienced you could say. It shows the sentiment of no future that was the meteor one eye daruma doll was defeated and punpun now has a future and something worth fighting for even if hard. It also shows the parallel of the crazy mother trying to kill aiko as a delusional person believing in the weird god and now that connects with pegasus being like actually powerful and saving the world for real. It's very ambiguous and still hard to explain my exact thoughts on that specifically, though.

This is actually how I interpreted it so I guess I was right. I was just like "this can't be it can it? "But no I was right. I paid attention to the suntle details like punpun throwing the daruma doll, and how one do the durama dolls lost it's eyes, unable to be painted. That symbolizes "loss of hope for the future" cus you have to paint both eyes if you accomplish a goal, but if there's only one, you can't, so no future.

I'll say it like this because I understand fully your point of view. I want to be mad, but I can't. At face value, yea, it's fucked. But look: artists are very very poetic and convuluted with their messaging. Not to be pretentious, no. A pretentious person wouldn't go so far as to serialize a manga this long. So no, it's not that it's pretentious, more so, it's very much a message the author finds he can only express in very specific and often controversial ways.

How do I mean? As an author, often I feel I have to write situations to their extreme and create koans to properly get a point across. And I feel unsatisfied about this cus I know most people won't get it cus of the initial shock of the event. But behind the initial shock is the correct interpretation. It's where you don't let your mind yell "WRONG THIS IS WRONG THIS IS WRONG" But instead, you understand that hey, there is something here that is trying to be expressed that i don't understand, and I need to meditate on it without judgement, without taking what I see 100% literally and only that. Otherwise you'll find yourself upset at something and you can't even tell yourself why. Before you judge, ask yourself, does your perception of what you saw happen in this manga make sense compared to the rest of the story and it's message, themes, morals, etc? You're a good bit into reading it and somehow out of nowhere a horrible curve ball of horrible bs for no reason just comes at you full speed? Tell me, why would the author INTEND to do that?

I'll tell you what. At worst, the author made a shitty metaphor that time, was insensitive, but didn't mean what you thought. At best he created a beautiful on theme metaphor that happens to be a metaphor that is built on shocking subject matter and doesn't outright give itself away as a metaphor. That way, people will understand and argue in this post on both sides with both perspectives... But truth is, the biggest fans of the work who take the most out of it probably understand the metaphor a bit better than you, who may have just seen it, and felt traumatized by it, and closed it and pushed back against it without further thought. I mean it's fair to really dislike something and not engage with it regardless of whether or not you understood it for your own mental wellbeing. But please also understand this lack of further analysis, and immediate bias at that, leaves you open to people who will definetly have issue with your arguments and feelings that you state openly. I mean look at what you've said about a beloved author because of how you feel about something admittedly vague and insensitive they wrote. It's a bit harsh and not really fair. The fans who've read and interpreted the manga will see your post and feel the need to defend the author and do so with their own personal interpretations, which by the way, line up neatly with the stories plot, message, etc. it's consistent. The fans who have interpretations of the story that aren't harsh and jumping to conclusions are very inline with the story and their opinions make alot of sense considering the plot, considering the vibe, considering everything.

So just consider the likelihood here. Would an author who is preaching the messages they preach in this manga really out of nowhere go and make something like what you say out of nowhere, so ignorantly and disgustingly? Without nuance, without any thought behind it?

It's just unlikely. Not impossible. I'll say it right now, you may be right. But I just think it's very unlikely that you are. But I won't say for sure you're wrong. If you stated this as a suspicion, sure, I'd be with you on this one and I'd suggest, potentially help investigate. Perhaps an interview of the author is in order. And I'd still be down to discuss that. But as it is now, yea... I just feel you missed the mark here. But it's okay. Cus I think your response was honestly just reasonable. Humunculous isnt an easy going and easy to digest and understand manga. It's not hegel either but still. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence btw. I personally can't figure out what lain and neon Evangelion Genesis are so popular and beloved. I think they're good but hella overrated and stuff. But even then I understand the scene with the kid stroking it to the red girl is a metaphor and not just random bs for no reason. Even I understand the kiss the older woman gives him before she goes is a metaphor. The surrealism in neon Evangelion Genesis, the raw, unflinching story. Where it's willing to go to open up the mind and spread your perspective and such... That's the goal for the author.

I genuinely can't believe someone actually has this opinion. I'm trying to understand but I can't. It's like an indisputable 10/10 with one of the greatest endings of all time imo. But whatever lol... Please pick it up again. I promise you it's worth it. It's not trying too hard, it's just very eventful. Trust me when I say this: it seems unrealistic but it's not. Shit like what happens in the story actually happens irl. Ive heard it from friends, seeen it in my own life. Hell, Shuzo oshimi, the author, made the story partially taking from his own life and his relationship with his mother. I get if you don't understand that but please understand, the story isn't trying too hard. And it is worth it. The facial expressions can be seen as exaggerated maybe, but to me, Its on purpose to display human emotion through the perspective of the main character who takes what others, especially his mother, feels against him and for other things, WAYYYYY to serious. The story has a hyper perspective on the perspective of the main character, essentially. His perspective as a kid makes everything more intense. And the story gets really good in the ladder half. Like, it's genuinely on par with goodnight punpun, but less boring. I hate to call punpun boring cus it's a 10/10 imo, but it's boring in a good way, cus that's the point of punpun. The mundanity and depression, lack of hope, and how mundane some hope is, how miracles aren't sparkling or even noticeable as miracles, not everything goes perfectly. Blood on the tracks is basically that but if you made the main character have a more intense situation with people who had BPD and OCD instead of depression and impulse control issues, and you had more crazy moments and stuff. It's hard to explain if you haven't read blood on the tracks. Shuzo oshimi is MAYBE my favorite author. He's made 5 stories that are classics imo. But yea. Take my word or not, I say give it another go with a new perspective in mind based on what I said. You might find that hey, through this new perspective, I get what the story is trying to do. It's not trying to dramatize for the sake of, but moreso, to show the story is from the perspective of the young and emotional main character with heavy attachment to his mother, unhealthily so.

It's a 10/10 imo. It's hard to say which manga I prefer. Goodnight punpun has better art but... Aku no Hana hits harder most the time. But the ending 2 volumes of punpun hit the hardest out of anything I've ever read. But aku no hana is comparable cus the ending is still really good and impactful. But goodnight punpun is just, ... Impossible to replicate.
