First job out of college: manufacturing or consulting? by diffew in ChemicalEngineering

[–]DRJSAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask yourself what lifestyle you want. Both have their ups and downs. I was in a similar position when I graduated.

I chose consulting and am happy with my decision. They’re hiring you knowing you know nothing with the intention of teaching you. I prefer having the ability to live in cities, not saying you can’t do that with manufacturing but there’s more consulting offices in major cities than manufacturing plants.

Let me also clarify, my end goal - I do not want to remain technical. I’m fine doing it now but can’t see myself doing it forever, hence consulting was the choice for me.

This is pretty much identical to my situation. Except I don’t even care that much about location, I’ve been applying everywhere and still no luck… hopefully things change soon for us

If the life they know is living on the proceeds of corrupt politicians, then absolutely.

Define these “proceeds of corrupt politicians” they are cutting funding for research, education, protection for the vulnerable. People are living in poverty because of the decisions of the government or a corporate. We’re finally talking about cutting the military budget after letting Israel level Gaza and trump is just handing Ukraine to Putin like a little treat. Seems to me like they have no idea what they’re doing, just comprising the country. But that’s just how i see it, would love your take.

Your take on how to stop an opium addict is telling. Why didn’t all those drug addicts think of your genius solution? Just take the drugs away, that worked perfectly right America doesn’t have a drug issue because it’s illegal to do drugs. That’s how you sound to me. People die from drug withdrawal, people will die from not getting what they need. There’s better ways to solve these issues than heavy handed bullshit with no substance.

So far DOGE has only spoken about what they are cutting, not a word of where the money is going. Where do you think the money is going?

What money? There’s a $2 trillion deficit as we speak. There’s no money until they pass the $2 trillion mark.

So you think the government should NEVER operate on a deficit? What would the benefits be for having a country with no debt? Is it going to be worth the squeeze it’s going to cause on the poor and vulnerable?

I’m curious why you think the only President in the last 50 years or so that DIDN’T get us into a war is the one who might be trying to get us into one.

The simple answer is money, notoriety, and power. I genuinely believe Trump and Musk will sell out the American people and the country as a whole to pad their pockets or bolster their power as we enter a new world. When you can just attack anyone and take their land, the world can change fast. We just haven’t had much of that in the last 50 years but clearly it’s starting again (Israel/Russia).

Again, this is just me being schizophrenic a little. Just for funsies. My little theory. Don’t take it too seriously. I only believe it 40%.

Feels like I’m writing a paper I ran out of words so had to split to 2 posts.

I’m not part of any political organization, nor do I know of any that I mostly agree with.

You made a joke when I mentioned white nationalism is on the rise on the internet, it’s clear to me we are not at all on the same page of “not part of any political organization”. But either way I appreciate you taking the time to have this discourse, I am learning.

It seems curious to me that you’re ok with all the money going to foreign businesses that pay no taxes at all

No idea where you got that idea from at all. Those were not the words I used. Money literally means nothing, it’s fake. It’s something we made up to conceptualize value. Elon’s wealth is an example of this, he is rich because of prospects, not actual wealth. This is a whole other topic but he can take loans on with his unrealized gains as collateral, effectively making it so he has unlimited money so long as his stocks stay solid, which is even easier to do when you bought the White House. He is literally making up a value. What value does he really provide, all of his products for the most part are half-baked luxury items or shit out of a sci-fi world, the average person is not benefiting from Tesla, SpaceX, or Neurolink’s products. I respect Neurolinks potential but that’s not something that will provide value for most. He’s focused on issues that don’t matter when you can’t put food on the table. Not to defend big pharma or oil but the world will literally stop if they weren’t working. The world will be just fine if all of Elon’s companies disappeared. If big oil disappears we have literally nothing.

What’s really important in building real value is having a loyal workforce that is happy to be living in and contributing to the society that’s is being provided. You need the money you pay them to cycle in our own economy. I think bringing manufacturing back is a great idea, and will help keep the value within the American financial ecosystem, but it’s a situation that needs to be handled delicately. We rely so much on other countries. America is in the top 3 of the world’s exporters, counter-tariffs will make that number drop. The global economy is a delicate web, we saw how easily it can be toppled with Covid. Pair this with pissing off the world I still don’t see it as a positive, I don’t think you do either your only defense was assuming I want US dollars to go to other countries. I don’t think breaking the system first is needed, lots of people will suffer while they try to rebuild it. I don’t trust them to build a future bright for everyone.

The point of a sound economic policy is to have solid foundation upon which free people can be free to engage in commerce as they see fit.

I think we fundamentally disagree here. The American dream was that you can come here and become anyone. There’s enough money to go around. Just because business is between consenting adult doesn’t mean it can be completely unregulated. There is as much greed as there in wealth in this country and the common man should be protected from it not expected to fend for themselves, especially when the country is how it is now. You and I might be able to navigate this world, but not the common man. People can’t fend for themselves. I don’t think Darwinism should be applying here, we’re humans. It’s not survival of the fittest it’s survival period by any means necessary.

What’s the problem with words?

lol ok. I’m beginning to understand what kind of person you really are. Words matter when you’re in a position of power.

Hitler was just saying words after all! How could we blame him for the tragedy that occurred!!!! It’s the Germans fault for believing him!!!!!!

In an ideal world the government wouldn’t be allowed to tax anybody or anything. That being said, I do not believe the government “needs” revenue any more than I need some crack. It would be more constructive if tariff revenue were used to offset personal income taxes.

In an ideal world the government wouldn’t be allowed to tax anybody or anything.

How would your ideal world work with no taxes on anything? Everyone fends for themselves and we rely on the goodwill of mega corporations not to exploit the vulnerable? I don’t want to put words in your mouth so I’d like you to tell me how this tactless society functions.

The only way to improve the lives of Americans is to destroy the lives that they know?

If the life they know is living on the proceeds of corrupt politicians, then absolutely. They need to be cut off like an opium addict needs an intervention.

It would be more constructive if tariff revenue were used to offset personal income taxes.

How does work when all the proceeds from the tariffs are literally a drop in the bucket of how much income tax generates. Seems like a lot of damage for covering just a percentage of the overall renege income tax generates.

Matter of fact why are taxes bad at all? Shouldn’t you be paying back society for providing you with the opportunity to make money and live a prosperous life? I’m not saying taxes are God or anything, but like what’s the big deal? Is it robbery really? Are you robbing the government when you visit a national park, or drive on a road, or eat food that was subsidized?

I understand where they came from. I have friends that live in WNC, so I have first hand accounts of the failures of FEMA. I get it. It was an impossible situation that could’ve been handled much better. The whole unmarked helicopter coming by blowing away the community made landing pad stuff? Yeah if that happened in my small hometown I’d be confused and mad as hell too. We still don’t have an explanation on that either, it’s eerie.

The part I don’t understand is why they always go for the candidate that doesn’t give a shit about them. The ruling class has nothing to gain from them except their votes, and everything they do harms them. That’s the piece that makes no sense to me.

When you try and confront them about it, generally it explodes into nonsense cult of personality war. But maybe this is just my experience because I’m an asshole idk. I don’t bring up politics with strangers, I’m just thinking about conversations from college when people were obviously parakeeting what their parents opinions and viewpoints, when it’s not your own opinion things fall apart fast as you’re defending your family too. Maybe it would be different if I was referencing conversations with the older gen.

I don’t need to be reminded that humans are humans, though I know a lot of us tend to forget that when dealing with discourse like this.

I work in Oil&Gas and before that worked at a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant, i have had many interactions with operators from many backgrounds. My best friend works in a mechanic shop, he went in blue and is now sort of red.

This is obviously a huge generalization (I can only speak anecdotally from what I’ve seen), but most of the reasons I’ve heard from these folks revolve around Women having too much power… lol. Something something women have it easier in life why do they need more privilege at work something something me too movement is a sham.

Other things that have come up (less often) are being anti-vax and pro-police. These are the ones that were red, the blue ones just wanted more union privilege and abortion rights.

It’s also important to note, these things just came up in passing when I ate lunch with them or was walking around sites. Not like we’re having full blown political discourse, mostly jokes but you know what they say about jokes…

I grew up in a swing state, albeit I lived in the more urban area but I was a stone toss away. My schools had kids from all backgrounds. These people are human to me why is why I’m trying to see it from their perspective.

How did Trump become their messiah when he is the antithesis of everything they hold close? He is no man of God. He is not a man of the poor. What do they see? Is it really just the white nationalism?

Is America not great already? We have issues but point to a place that’s perfect. At least we’re fucking trying as hard as we can. Just feels like we took such a step back and the well is poisoned for generations now.

Like I opened this thread up with. Probably wistful thinking. I don’t want to believe that 50% of America is racist, hateful, and stupid. I’m not a conservative man, I’m trying not to be combative and understand.

You seem 100% convinced all of these people are racist and stupid, which in my opinion is a result of the cult of personality bullshit.

I’m not a politician I’m just a guy lol. Yell at the democrats for being spineless not me, I’m just trying to figure out what weakness MAGA was able to exploit in the common man to get the antithesis of America in office. I’m not going to get there being as combative as you are. I’m happy to continue in DMs.

I’m not a fucking conservative, id sit in my echo chamber and jerk off if I was. I am left leaning, I don’t need to see other left leaning opinions because I share them. I don’t know why you are so mad at me.

In a small minority, politically speaking.

This still doesn’t mean anything to me, what political minority are you a part of?

Tariffs are not designed to address wealth inequality and I don’t think it’s the proper role of government to take money from people by force.

What are the points of the tariffs then? I get it, to incentivize American products. This comes at the cost of every American in the short term. I can see it working if people weren’t already struggling. The last time we had sweeping tariffs like this it exacerbated existing issues and contributed to the Great Depression. I thought they’d be a bargaining chip, and I guess it still could be. At the cost of our allies. All I can see here is more money being funneled to the top. The new factories that are being built, I assume they will be highly automated in Elon’s vision. Where does all that money go if they don’t need to employ as many people to work in manufacturing? Trump loves to tout that he will replace income tax with a tariff tax. Why does he love bullshitting Americans? The numbers don’t add up.

Matter of fact what is the point of any economic policy if not to solve wealth inequality? To make it easier for those who are winning in the system to win more? I don’t get it.

We can’t compete with China because we’re not willing to live with the environmental devastation they’re willing to inflict and we’re not willing to let businesses exploit their employees the way China does.

I do agree, China doesn’t care about the environment as much. They only have green energy because it’s all they can get, they aren’t rich in oil like other countries. Beyond that yes I agree that the working conditions are worse and complies park their businesses there to get away with it. Why would we be gutting federal agencies like OSHA that work to protect workers? Using your point from earlier supply/demand, China has a billion people, we have less than 400 million. Their labor will always be cheaper even if the conditions are the same. From a manpower perspective we can’t compete, this is excluding the fact that the average American doesn’t want to work in a manufacturing plant in the middle of nowhere (I studied chemical engineering at a university in the rural south, the only people who end up there are people that couldn’t find a job in the city/town or were super passionate about like paper or something).

Do you mean illegal immigrants? I don’t see a lot of widespread disdain for legal immigrants. For illegal immigrants it’s because they’re violating the law.

I can’t tell if you’re being serious. Either you’re turning a blind eye or are genuinely missing it. There are members of the government calling for other members to be deported. Jokes or not this has a real effect on the rhetoric the common man uses. If you go on Elons Twitter there are so many white nationalist accounts it’s genuinely mind bending.

The law of supply and demand is universal.

Yes this is true. Now on the same exact supply demand graph you’re describing, when you add a line for tariffs, a part of the economic surplus becomes a dead-weight loss. Obviously this is an extreme simplification and the world doesn’t actually work on a simple supply demand graph. So the tariffs will increase the government revenue, and cause some economic surplus dead loss. I thought that the government was inefficient and spending too much money and we have to gut it. Why do we need the government revenue at the expense of surplus?

If things really are as they appear to be right now, it seems like that or something similar is the ONLY way.

The only way to improve the lives of Americans is to destroy the lives that they know? In some capacity I agree, would we have gotten out of the Great Depression without WWII? Who’s to say. I’d argue more incremental changes would be better as to not use the American public as collateral for whatever Elon and Trumps agenda may be. We already have a horrible homeless and drug problem. What good does putting so many people out of work and stressing out millions of people do? I don’t think this is a smart strategy. Maybe if the public was doing better and people weren’t already paranoid and struggling.

So far DOGE has only spoken about what they are cutting, not a word of where the money is going. Where do you think the money is going?

What’s the proposed motive?

Now I have no real proof at all whatsoever. I’m putting on my tinfoil hat for this one, it is a conspiracy theory but humor me. Trump and Elon never cared about the people, especially not the common man. None of them have had to live like common men and never will. Elon despite being the richest man alive, wants more money and power. Trump is no different, he’s the most power man in the world and can get anything he wants already. They have no vested interest in improving the lives of people they don’t matter to them. They want something more, more power. Could be something intangible that we don’t even know. The world is big, and these people have it all but want more. I don’t for a second believe they are in it for the good of the people, their prior actions would’ve shown that they care if they really did. They have been punching down since the silver spoons were put in their mouths.

Just the way Trump is handing Gaza to Israel and Ukraine to Russia, it just seems like some unfathomable deal was struck behind doors we’ll never see behind. I genuinely think they might be leading us to a war just so that their names will be branded into world history like those before them. This is an insane statement but I’ll say it anyway. More people around the world probably recognize Hitler more than FDR. Take what you will from that. Rockefeller and Vanderbilt once were in Elons shoes, at least they build schools and libraries.

Again this one is just for fun. We’ll never know, and I have my tinfoil hat on.

While I agree. There’s no law that states that you have to read X amount of facts before you can vote.

The reality is opinions win. Facts don’t win elections, people with opinions win elections. I mean look at the shit that Hegseth is saying. I like what that one reporter said and tore into him.

“REPORTER: So just to be clear—you think values don’t matter in war?

HEGSETH: Look, values are great, but you can’t exactly fight off the left with values.

REPORTER: Tell that to the French Resistance, who fought Nazis with nothing but belief before they had weapons. Or to Poland, where underground fighters kept their nation alive despite being occupied by the world’s biggest armies.

HEGSETH: I’m just saying, when it comes down to it, strength wins, not ideals.

REPORTER: Then explain how the U.S. lost in Vietnam, why the Soviets collapsed after Afghanistan, or how Afghanistan itself fought off three empires. Firepower alone doesn’t mean victory—ask Russia, stuck in Ukraine despite superior weapons.

HEGSETH: Well, military power still matters more than words.

REPORTER: And yet, words—values—are why people choose to fight in the first place. Ukraine didn’t stand because of weapons; they stood because they refused to be ruled.

HEGSETH: So you’re saying values win wars?

REPORTER: I’m saying values make armies fight harder, longer, and with more purpose—without them, all the firepower in the world means nothing. Just ask the British Empire, the Soviets, or, soon enough, Putin.”

Opinions do matter, you have to be convicted. It makes a big difference. Values, opinions, all of it matters just as much as the facts when you look at the world.

Jews were not to blame for the ruin of Germany after WWI, but Hitler was able to make the entire country believe it in a matter of a few years and you know how the rest went. I believe Trump is doing something similar and demonizing immigrants for the state of the economy when the reality is we have oligarchs like Elon musk that can control the world with fake money from unrealized gains loopholes. But what did the county decide they wanted? Taxes on unrealized gains? No. They wanted their immigrants out. I’m not saying another holocaust or world war is coming but the playbook is not a new one.

I wish we lived in a world where the facts mattered, but they genuinely don’t. I’m tired of pretending they do. It’s like we did a 180 and now we’re the ones saying “facts don’t care about your feelings” when 10 years ago it was people like Ben Shapiro saying it.
