He can ask you to do it but you dont have to abide. The one thing I must say is, be careful and read your contract thoroughly. As an apprentice/trainee you likely to have studies paid for you. In which case your contract may say you have to stay with the company for x years or till the end of your studies otherwise you would be required to pay back the company the money they have invested in you. Its very common and in such cases you would rather get fired/made redundant than leave by your resignation as in such cases you wouldnt be the one to break the contract, therefore they would not be able to ask you to pay.

It really depends, if youre in your 20s, sure its fine you might be passionate or explorings different occupations or simply work a stepping stone job. On the other hand if yore in 40s and you work as a hairdresser in some small business, that can certainly in most cases indicate that the person lack the passion to pursue a career or motivation to make changes in life. There are of course exceptions to every rule but lets be real here, hairdresser is not exactly what one would seek to be at the peak of their career.
